about the play

Based on historical people and real events, Arthur Miller’s 1953 classic play about the witch-hunts and trials in seventeenth-century Massachusetts is a searing portrait of a community engulfed by hysteria.  In the rigid theocracy of Salem, rumors that women are practicing witchcraft galvanize the town's most basic fears and suspicions.  After ending an affair with his young housemaid, honest farmer John Proctor watches in horror as first the girl accuses his wife of being a witch, and then self-righteous church leaders and townspeople insist that she be brought to trial. The ruthlessness of the prosecutors and the eagerness of neighbor to testify against neighbor brilliantly illuminate the destructive power of socially sanctioned violence.

Winner of the Tony Award for Best Play, The Crucible was written as a mirror to reflect the anti-communist hysteria inspired by Senator Joseph McCarthy's "witch-hunts" in the United States.  As the play progresses, and we hear characters say lines such as “One is either with this court or against it,” we realize that for all of society’s advances, some of mankind’s worst impulses remain unchanged.  The play is as timely and relevant today as it was in 1953 – if not more so.

Tucson: Theatrical Mime Theatre-This Weekend

From: Heald, Lorie, Ms. [mailto:lheald@stgregoryschool.org]
Sent: Friday, January 26, 2007 1:25 PM
Subject: Re: Theatrical Mime Theatre-This Weekend

Announcing Theatrical Mime Theatre's next production—
Rick Wamer's solo show:

Geometries: Performing art Experiments by a not so Mathematical Genius

When: Friday and Saturday, January 26 & 27 at 7:30 pm
Where: ZUZI Theatre, 738 N. 5th Avenue in the Historic Y
Cost: $12.00 in advance, $15 at the door
Tickets available at Antigone Books
Call for advanced reservations: 990-7425

Hope to see you there!!

“Geometries” is a fast paced performance mingling theatrical mime and monologue that has delighted audiences throughout North America.

Through a variety of zany characters, each one dealing with a world of stress in his own way, “Geometries” takes us for a ride on the roller coaster of life. The acclaimed solo production reveals Rick Wamer’s off beat sense of humor through the incarnation of an over-sexed mathematician trying to come to terms with his quest for perfection, the physical grace of a marionette as an aging puppeteer struggles to be the very object of his art and the quiet beauty of fire imaging life’s passion in a classically drawn physical poem.

Through these and other humorous and at times tragic characters, Rick Wamer’s “Geometries” celebrates the joy in living while revealing some of the challenges encountered along the way. In the explosive finale, “Geometries” attempts to give an answer to the elusive question of how to live as joyful beings while enduring the pressures of life’s stress.

And a crowded attic becomes the setting for an acrid funny, and moving inquest into the wounds of family, the allure of the disposable, and the nature
of human failure.

Tucson: Casting Call, Indie Feature Seeking Supporting Actor

From: awakethemovie@gmail.com
Sent: Wednesday, January 17, 2007 2:55 PM
Subject: [Tucson Actors Forum] Indie Feature Seeking Supporting Actor!

Production: "Awake" (working title)
Director/Producer: Constantine "Gus" Kyriakakis
Shooting Dates: TBA Through 2007.
Shooting Location: Tucson, AZ

This is a "no-Budget" feature film project that has been in
development for over 6 years. We began production loosely in
September 2006, and are expecting to continue production through
2007, though we would like to have most everything shot by the
summertime.

This film is completely self funded, and everyone involved is working
for free. There will be meals and drinks made available for full days
and sometimes on half days.

We are looking for a Male Actor, between the ages of 18 and 25, to
play the supporting role of "Matt". Matt shares an apartment with his
best friend (and Lead) Damon. Matt is the polar opposite of Damon, he
is all the things that Damon thinks he needs to be at the beginning
of the film, but as things develop, both of them start to re-evaluate
this. Matt's personality is extremely exuberant and over-zealous. He
is also a smart ass at times. He is a media arts major at the
University and enjoys partaking in certain psychotropic
hallucinogenic substances. His philosophy in life is to live for
today, and this carelessness is what Damon envies most in Matt; His
ability to immediately fit in to what ever situation life puts in
front of him. However, he is blinded to the potential dangers in the
people he socializes with and has a slight brush with death which
leads to an awakening within him, as well as a profound monologue...
Matt is a fun character with great dialogue that is sure to be an
audience favorite.

We are looking for actors who understand the amount of time and
effort that goes in to a project like this. We realize that we are
asking a lot for a non-paid gig, but we believe that together we can
make a great film that will lead to paid gigs, and we are looking for
actors who would like to ride the wave with us!

Please send résumé's and headshots to awakethemovie@gmail.com
<mailto:awakethemovie%40gmail.com> and we will contact you for an interview
and audition.

Tucson: LTW presents "Steel Magnolias"

Live Theatre Workshop Proudly Presents
Steel Magnolias
Directed by
Sabian Trout

“Suffused with humor and tinged with tragedy”
  -  NY Post

Based on a true-story, STEEL MAGNOLIAS is a heartwarming comedy, revolving around the lives of a close-knit circle of friends who meet every Saturday morning in a beauty shop in the small Louisiana Parish of Chinquapin County. At the center of the group is Shelby Eatenton, about to be married and start her own family -- despite the fact that her diabetes could get in the way. Her mother, M'Lynn Eatenton, looks to her four closest friends for strength and laughter as she battles her deepest fears to support her daughter's decisions. In Truvy's beauty salon, where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done, Truvy and her assistant, Annelle, dispense shampoo and free advice to Shelby and M'Lynn, and
enjoy the quick witted remarks of Miss Clairee; the local social leader,  and the town's rich curmudgeon, Miss Ouiser. The play is alternately hilarious and touching - and, in the end, deeply revealing of the importance of friendship. A moving story wrapped in witty humor, and told by women who are lively, funny, and marvelously amiable company-- in good times and bad.

 Starring:
Holli Henderson as Shelby; Carlisle Ellis as M’Lynn; Kristi
Loera as Truvy; Peg Peterson as Miss Clairee,
Joan Van Dyke as Ouiser; and Megan Patno as Annelle
