GLITTERING GALA 2008 BENEFITS ATC’S AWARD-WINNING EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Thousands of students' lives touched in 07-08 season

For the past sixteen years, Arizona Theatre Company’s annual Gala has launched the Tucson arts season and has become a glittering local tradition. ATC celebrates the 2008-2009 Season on Saturday, September 27, 2008 with its seventeenth annual Gala at the historic Temple of Music and Art. Dine and dance under the stars with ATC artists, supporters and staff after an exclusive performance of Enchanted April.

Gala 2008 is Arizona Theatre Company’s major fundraiser of the year, supporting fourteen award-winning education and community-based programs that enhance the theatre experience and foster artists and audiences for the future. Generous support for this event has been provided by The Jim Click Automotive Team, and Joan and Donald Diamond as Platinum Sponsors; and Paul and Alice Baker, Madden Media, LLC, Raytheon Company, and Wells Fargo as Gold Sponsors.

Co-chairs for Gala 2008 are Beth Bank, Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch, and Amy Courson of Strickland and Strickland, P.C. Committee members include: Jill Becker, Betsy Bolding, Kendra Conners, Jan Copeland, Laurie Glaser, Robert Glaser, Donna Haskell, Tori Congdon Hill, Marv Kirchler, Rhonda Knotts, Jill Madden, Susan McAnally, Claudine Messing, Brianne Moore, Linda “Mac” Perlich, Emily Rosenberg Pollock, Drs. John and Helen S. Schaefer, Bill Smith, Clague and Sally Van Slyke, and Arlene Webster.

The evening begins at 5:00 PM with a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception in the courtyard of the Temple of Music and Art, located at 330 S. Scott Avenue in downtown Tucson, followed by the Gala performance of Enchanted April by Matthew Barber from the novel by Elizabeth von Arnim. After the performance, attendees will enjoy dinner by Carte Blanche Catering and dancing to the sounds of Joe Bourne and Friends.

The story of Enchanted April begins with an advertisement in the London Times: Small castle on the Mediterranean, Northern Italy, to be let for the month of April.”  That simple newspaper notice seduces a quartet of British women to rent a villa for one blissful spring in 1922, where their lives of ordered regularity blossom into glorious disarray.  Seduced by cinnamon breezes, they learn to let their hair, and their guards, down and awaken to the simple joys of friendship, love and marriage. A Tony-nominated Broadway hit based on the best-selling novel, Enchanted April is a heartwarming, verdant comedy about the romantic rediscovery of life's enchantments.  “A lush, thoroughly refreshing theatrical holiday. A magical triumph.” - LA Times.

Immediately following the performance, ATC will honor John Hudak with the 2008 Georgy Award, named after longtime Tucsonan and ATC Trustee Emeritus George Rosenberg. The Georgy Award is presented annually to recognize the significant impact that certain individuals or organizations have had on ATC and on the arts in Arizona.

John Hudak first joined Madden Media, then Madden Publishing, in 1987 as the first editor of Tucson Guide when there were just five employees and two magazines. Today, the company has more than 100 employees and works with 60 destination marketing organizations to promote tourism in 36 states.  The company’s award-winning publications and marketing campaigns reach more than 120 million consumers annually. Mr. Hudak has contributed significantly to the company's impressive growth. As Publisher, John is the top authority to the company’s editing, design, and advertising teams. During his decades at Madden, Mr. Hudak has shaped the editorial missions of Madden’s local publications, such as Tucson HOME Magazine and Tucson Guide, and the company’s direction as a whole.

After graduating from the University of Arizona, Mr. Hudak helped start the Annual Tucson Poetry Festival, which just celebrated its 26th annual festival. Mr. Hudak then became very active in the Downtown Tucson art scene of the 1980’s and helped found the Downtown Arts District Partnership, and the Tucson Arts Coalition with the sole purpose of maintaining affordable opportunities for artists to live and work in Downtown Tucson.  It was this organization that Mr. Hudak became the spokesperson and chairman of the campaign to “Save the Temple of Music and Art” from demolition.

Mr. Hudak was twice appointed by the Governor to serve as a Commissioner for the Arizona Commission on the Arts.  He was recently honored by the Tucson Pima Arts Council when he won the prestigious 2008 Lumie Award for Arts Supporter.  The Lumie Award is given each year by the Tucson Pima Arts Council to honor individual efforts in supporting the arts in Pima County.  Mr. Hudak was also honored this year by the Tucson Advertising Federation with the Golden Pen Award, which is given each year to an outstanding professional in the print advertising community of Southern Arizona.

A complete biography for John Hudak, Beth Bank and Amy Courson can be found at: http://aztheatreco.org/documents/08-09_ATC_Gala_Bios.pdf.

Tucson: Casting call, male actor to play lead in short film URGENT!

Looking for male actor to play lead in short film URGENT! (downtown)

Reply to: gigs-817522503@craigslist.org
Date: 2008-08-28, 6:32PM MST

Local film shooting in late September/early October! need actor with quirky looks (dark hair please). Please send resume and headshot!

Apologies for the last minute notice; the existing actor had to depart due to conflicting commitments. Open availability a must! Rehearsals and fittings will be throughout the month of September.

Please check out my previous work at: myspace.com/asianballerina
Site for the current film: myspace.com/handstuttering

Synopsis:

Gwen can't hear; she sleeps to dream where her world is audible and beautiful..

Guy cannot sleep; he hides in a world where he stutters and cannot relate to society..

Guy and Gwen live in the same building, in two separate worlds that are apart from the collective. Together they learn to live in a space where she hears and he speaks in unison. Using the enjoyably awkward sensibility and harmonic dreamscape of The Science of Sleep, and the gothic fairy tale style of Edward Scissorhands, Stuttering Ears (Deafening the Heart) is a hodgepodge of a tale, shifting back stylistically and tonally. It examines the human connection and the communication barriers that happen naturally, and those that we inflict upon ourselves.

Tucson: Actor/Director wine tasting tomorrow

Dear TTA List Members,

Now for something completely different…

Please join me tomorrow, Friday 8/29, 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., at Pastiche Modern Eatery for a wine tasting event featuring wines by actors and directors.  Pastiche has been doing Friday wine tastings for some time now, but they have asked me to be their first “customer” host this Friday, which means I get to present the wines and poor you a taste of each.

Pastiche is a wonderful supporter of the arts in Tucson.  This year, Pastiche was awarded TAPC’s Lumie Award for “Small Business Partner (fewer than 50 employees) — For outstanding support of the arts”.  Twice a year, Pastiche has its “Philanthropy with Phlavor” month during which every guest can select their favorite charity or arts organization in Tucson to which a portion of their check will be donated. For more information see http://www.pasticheme.com/whats.html.  And that’s just part of the support they give to our community.

The wine tasting is only $5.  I hope to see you there.  This could turn into a fun mixer for the Tucson theatrical community.

Here are the wines that I have selected to present in keeping with the theme:

ACT 1: Sparkling Marilyn “Blonde de Noirs” – to clear the pallet and get into the spirit of legendary Hollywood.

Act 2: Newman’s Own Chardonnay 2006 - Like all other Newman’s Own® products, Paul Newman and the Newman’s Own Foundation donate all profits and royalties after taxes to educational and charitable purposes.

Act 3: Fess Parker Frontier Red NV Lot 81 - made in the same down to earth spirit of the frontiersman who tamed this land, Davy Crocket.

Act 4: MacMurray Ranch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2006 – He may have had “three sons” but Fred’s daughter Kate is the spokesperson for the family ranch and winery today.

Final Scene: Coppola Director’s Cut Zinfandel “Dry Creek Valley 2005” – The Godfather of winemakers.

Tucson, Arizona--PCC Theatre Arts presents the family offering “A Thousand Cranes” by Kathryn Schultz Miller’s, directed by Betsy Kruse Craig and featuring PCC students. The production runs September 26 through October 5 in PCC Center for the Arts Proscenium Theatre. Crane Day, a free event for families featuring games, origami, entertainment and treats, is Saturday, September 13 at 9-11 a.m. in the Black Box Theatre.

A Thousand Cranes is based on the true and uplifting story of young Sadako Sasaki, beautifully dramatized through movement and music. Sadako was only two years old when the atom bomb fell on Hiroshima during World War II. She survived without a scratch, but several years later is stricken with radiation sickness.
The crane, in Japan, is one of the mystical or sacred beasts and is said to live for a thousand years. An ancient Japanese legend promises that if a sick person folds a thousand cranes, the gods will grant the wish and make the person healthy again. Heartened by this tradition and urged by her friends and her grandmother’s spirit, Sadako begins to fold a thousand paper cranes. Relevant and visually splendid, the play reinforces the value hope, tradition and peace. The minimalistic Asian-stylized set transforms the stage without distracting from the magic of the movements.

The Pima Community College Center for the Arts is located on West Campus at 2202 West Anklam Road, Tucson (just west of downtown). For ticket information contact the box office at 206-6986 or centerforthearts@pima.edu.

Wait Until Dark at Beowulf Alley Theatre – Stage Crew/ Police Officers

Beowulf Alley Theatre Company, www.beowulfalley.org, at 11 South 6th Avenue, Tucson has an immediate need for a 2 stage crew positions that will also serve as two police officers. The policemen are walk-ons but they do have about five lines apiece of basic "police talk" that must be rendered convincingly. Some stage experience (i.e., acting) would be beneficial, but it would also be a good opportunity for newbies with a willingness to learn. The backstage work will most likely consist of helping with off-stage sound effects, prop management, and fire safety protocols. Both should look as if they were at least old enough to graduate high school and the police academy. Rehearsals will be a few nights per week for approximately 3 hours with an occasional 5th rehearsal some weeks. Tech rehearsals will be approximately the two weeks leading up to opening night, September 27. Performances are Thurs-Sat at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. through October 12. A stipend will be paid. If you can commit to the schedule, want to learn and have some fun, please call the director, Dave Sewell at (520) 888-5815 or call the theatre at (520) 622-4460.

We also have an immediate need for a Stage Manager/Light board Operator and Sound Board Operator.

Please contact the director, Dave Sewell at (520) 888-5815 or call the theatre at (520) 622-4460. We are willing to train. A stipend will be paid.

This is our most immediate need but we have technical positions open for each of the productions following Wait Until Dark. Give us a call if you are available for other productions!

*Each $10 ticket holder will be asked to show his or her valid Student/Teacher I.D. Only one ticket is accepted per I.D.  This will be strictly enforced.

*No $10 Discount tickets will be sold at the theater. If someone arrives at the theater expecting to purchase a $10 ticket at the box office, he or she will be asked to go online and purchase a ticket for a subsequent performance. Students/teachers will also have the option to purchase a discounted ticket for $25 if they do not wish to wait for the next performances.

*$10 Student/teacher Discount tickets apply ONLY to the FIRST 50 tickets per performance sold in advance online.

Seating is open, so if you have non-students in your party, you will still be able to sit together if you wish.
