Tucson: Downtown Tucson Latin Jazz Festival is Sept. 10 & 11!

From: Sandy Riser [mailto:sandy@thenextlevelaz.com]
Sent: Monday, August 30, 2010 6:45 PM
Subject: Media release: Downtown Tucson Latin Jazz Festival is Sept. 10 & 11!

Aug. 30, 2010

Downtown gets JAZZED!

The 2nd Annual Downtown Tucson Latin Jazz Festival is Sept. 10 & 11
New York jazz legend Larry Harlow and local dance band Tito Y Su Nuevo Son
are ready to get Tucsonans on their feet

There is a genre of music so energizing that it seduces you to move in your seat, clap your hands, thump your feet and then jump up in a frenzy of dancing. Salsa music is the guilty party.

The Downtown Tucson Latin Jazz Festival returns this year to offer audiences two opportunities to dance with wild abandon. Tucson group Tito Y Su Nuevo Son is the star attraction at the free Salsa Dance Party at La Placita Village on Sept. 10.

And then Tucson welcomes legendary New York jazzman Larry Harlow and the Latin Jazz Encounter who will play the Leo Rich Theatre on Sept. 11.

Sept. 10 at 7:30 pm: The main courtyard at La Placita Village will pulsate with a salsa beat from 7:30-11 pm as Tito Y Su Nuevo Son – familiar to Tucsonans from salsa hot spot Sur Real – plays a FREE dance party. Everyone is invited to dance the night away under the stars in one of Downtown’s most beautiful outdoor spaces. There will be a beer garden featuring cooling brews and margaritas and La Placita Village restaurants will be open for business.

Sept. 11 at 8 pm: Larry Harlow and the Latin Jazz Encounter will fire up the Leo Rich Theatre. Harlow is a true living legend known for his innovative blend of Afro-Cuban and jazz styles of piano playing. Although jazz and the piano styling of Art Tatum were his first love, his exposure as a teenager to the music and culture of the New York Latino community fascinated him and have influenced his music ever since. Harlow has been nominated for three Grammys and in 2008, was presented with a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ernersto Portillo Jr., Arizona Daily Star columnist and host of KXCI’s Latin music show Onda Suave, will emcee the show.

Tickets: General admission tickets for Larry Harlow are $25 through the TCC box office, TucsonJazz.org or by calling 903-1265.
$5 discount for Tucson Jazz Society and Hispanic Chamber members, active duty military and students with ID.
A VIP package, featuring a pre-concert reception with Larry Harlow at Cushing Street Bar & Restaurant and a ticket to the show, is available for $50 per person – call 903-1265.

The Downtown Tucson Latin Jazz Festival is presented by the Tucson Jazz Society, Downtown Tucson Partnership and Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

The festival is possible through the generous support of Wells Fargo, La Posada Hotel and Bon Boutique.

Tucson: New High School Booster Club Helps Theatre Students

New Booster Club Supports Ironwood Ridge High School Theatre Department

Parents and Supporters Form Group to Aid Drama Students and Enhance Community Theater

Parents have formed a new booster club for Ironwood Ridge High School’s Theatre Department to support theater education and encourage the community to attend performances.

The IRHS Theatre Booster Club will raise money and seek supply donations and volunteers in an effort to help drama students produce public performances and attend educational activities.

The club also wants IRHS to become a stronger part of the community by providing quality stage entertainment for the local community theater scene.

“Even in the best times we could use many things we can’t afford,” says Joseph Borunda, Theatre Department Head for Ironwood Ridge. “Recent budget cuts have made it that much harder to meet the needs of our students.”

Initial efforts by the booster club will include soliciting donations from businesses, seeking advertisers for the season’s program and improving publicity for the department’s four productions this season.

Officers of the new club are Leslie Stephens and Heidi Slyter, co-presidents; Victoria Box, treasurer, and Denise Burns, secretary.

Community supporters can attend club meetings. It meets every third Thursday of the month, 6 p.m., at the high school’s Blackbox Theatre.

More information is available at the booster website, www.amphi.com/teachers/jborunda/booster.html, or by contacting Borunda, 407-4244, jborunda@amphi.com.

Ironwood Ridge High School is a comprehensive public high school in Oro Valley within the Amphitheater Public Schools district. The theatre department, winner of five superior ratings at this year’s 2010 University of Arizona’s Southern Arizona Acting Festival, launches its 10th season this year with “Noises Off” Nov. 4-6.

Nine Buddhas Films is shooting a short comedy this week end that is a parody of a news program. We are shooting with broadcast quality equipment and have assembled an exceptional team of actors and filmmakers.

But we are still looking for an actor to play Senator John McCain (straight hair that could be made to look grey, a medium build, and a business suit will get you there) and some athletic males to play members of a professional baseball team who are being interviewed by a young female sports reporter in their locker room after the game. Our male athlethes need to look athletic and be able to say things like: "The team that came ready to play. . ." or "You have to take it one game at a time" or "Focus is important."

There is no monetary compensation, but you will get screen credit and a copy of the DVD.

Tucson, Arizona--
Pima Community College Theatre Arts kick starts the 2010-2011 Twentieth Anniversary Season with the wonderful, heartwarming children’s production, Charlotte’s Web. Cleverly adapted by Joseph Robinette and based on the book by E.B. White it is directed by Mickey Nugent. Public performances run September 24 through October 3 in the Center for the Arts Proscenium Theatre (Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.) ASL interpreters are available October 1. Tickets are $6. Charlotte’s Family Fun Time, a free event for families featuring kid-friendly activities and treats, is Saturday, September 11 from 9-11 a.m. in the Black Box Theatre.

Charlotte’s Web, first published in 1952, won a Newberry Honors Award in 1953 and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 1970. Joseph Robinette’s adaptation retains all the heart and soul of E.B. White’s book. All the characters come to life on stage—Wilbur, the “terrific,” “radiant” and “humble” runty pig rescued from the ax by the farmer’s young daughter Fern, who believes it’s unfair to kill anyone just because he’s small; Templeton, the self-centered rat who against his nature performs some very good deeds; and the incredible spider, Charlotte who proves to be “a true friend and a good writer.” The barnyard set, designed by Todd Poelstra, includes a giant steel web for Charlotte to scamper and write on. Director Mickey Nugent adds, “Charlotte’s Web represents a community of unlike individuals living together in tolerance and acceptance. It’s an excellent learning tool for our children today.” He states, “Great shows have heart and Charlotte’s Web is all heart!”

EL RIO THEATRE PROJECT PRESENTS:
"MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING"
by William Shakespeare

The El Rio Theatre Project will present its 4th Shakespeare in the Park production of Much Ado About Nothing at the Himmel Park Outdoor Amphitheatre, 1000 N. Tucson Blvd. Performances are scheduled for Sept.
16-19, 23-26 & Oct. 1-3. Curtain time is 7 p.m. for all performances, and the event is free to the public, with a suggested donation of $5.

Bring a blanket, a picnic basket and the whole family, and enjoy an evening of Theatre in the park.

A sharp, smart comedy about men and women and what it takes to make love happen. While Beatrice and Benedick hide their infatuation beneath witty barbs, Hero and Claudio race to the altar. Enter the malcontent Don John, bent on ruining the wedding. He nearly succeeds, but not before Beatrice and Benedick finally tell each other how they really feel. "Much Ado About Nothing" shows us different ways how people are attracted to one another, and how their realization and definitions of "love" relate to their perceptions of this beauty.

Tucson: Beowulf Alley Theatre presents Shining City by Conor McPherson

Beowulf Alley Theatre

Beowulf Alley Opens Their 2010-2011 Season with

Shining City  by Conor McPherson

(Tucson, AZ) Beowulf Alley Theatre, 11 South 6th Avenue, begins the new season with the Tony Award-nominated, Arizona Premiere of Shining City by Conor McPherson. Shining City has been described as a "modern day ghost story about human contact."

Set in a therapist's office in Dublin, the play grapples with faith, guilt and redemption, underscoring the failures of language to communicate the truth. A middle-aged man, John, who has recently seen the ghost of his deceased wife seeks professional help from a priest-turned-therapist, Ian. The travails of the guilt-ridden John offer more than professional fodder for Ian and the routine visits become a gripping struggle to survive.

I was blown away…Conor McPherson's … play is haunting, inspired and glorious. — NY Times Review

One of Ireland’s most prominent contemporary playwrights, Conor McPherson has won overwhelming acclaim for his insightful, meditative plays, which focus with a quiet, unblinking eye on the big themes: the crisis of modern masculinity, spirituality, frailty, solitude and – of course – death. In a review of his twice Tony award-nominated 2004 play Shining City, the Daily Telegraph called McPherson, the finest dramatist of his generation.

Awards for his theatre work include the Laurence Olivier Award, Evening Standard Award, Critics Circle Award, Drama Desk Award, George Devine Award, Meyer-Whitworth Award and the Stewart Parker Award.

Susan Arnold, Director, works in theatre and film as an actor, director, writer and producer. Her directorial credits include Last of the Boys, Dinner with Friends, and Stones in His Pockets with Beowulf Alley, where she contributes to the Artistic Development Committee. Susan served as Artistic Director for the Attic Theatre in Detroit, MI and is the recipient of several theatre excellence awards for acting and directing. She has appeared on stage in a number of productions including most recently Big 8 in Flaming Guns of the Purple Sage Beowulf Alley Theatre, Cleopatra in Immortal Longings and Claire in the production of The Maids, both at The Rogue Theatre. She is a member of Screen Actors’ Guild and Actors’ Equity Association and currently serves as Artistic Director for C.A.S.T. Clean and Sober Theatre in Tucson. The cast of Shining City includes Lucas Gonzales, David Greenwood, Laura Lippman and Jared Stokes.

Reservations are encouraged. We recommend this play for 13 years and older.

Tucson: Downtown Tucson Latin Jazz Festival is Sept. 10 & 11!

From: Sandy Riser [mailto:sandy@thenextlevelaz.com]

Subject: Media release: Downtown Tucson Latin Jazz Festival is Sept. 10 & 11!

Aug. 23, 2010

LIVE THEATRE WORKSHOP - 5317 E. Speedway | Tucson, AZ 85712

Located on the North side of Speedway between Rosemont and Craycroft

This production contains strong adult language and content. No one under 16 admitted.

SYNOPSIS

An American history of the world (sad, hysterical and bloody) told through digital music, hip-hop ballet and robot vaudeville -- ROBOTS VS. FAKE ROBOTS is like nothing you’ve seen or heard before. It is the sex dream that a Honda Civic would have, with an epic human drama sprinkled on top for that extra mile of heart and soul. By the year 6000, robots have almost, but not quite, replaced humans. Robots are young, sexy, beautiful and live in a subterranean world that looks and sounds like a disco. We meet robots called Shoe Horn, Cranberries CD, Neck Brace, and Morse Code. They are vain, shallow, jealous, suspicious, and above all, oblivious to human-style sensitivity. Sex (robot style) is frequent, but love does not exist. Enter Joe (Stephen Frankenfield) and his girlfriend Sammie (Ally Tanzillo). They are among the last humans, living like war survivors on the earth’s surface, sharing their few provisions and their warm feelings for one another. But all it takes for Joe is a couple of chance encounters with sexy female robots who taunt him about his human smell and Joe becomes determined to become a robot (or at least a fake robot).

“ROBOTS VS. FAKE ROBOTS satisfies the need for play on all sorts of levels: It's ridiculously engaging, arch, sexy, and makes fun of itself before you can. It's also the rare show that you wish would go on for, say, another hour.”
