In 1943 Holland, a 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family are forced into hiding toescape deportation to concentration camps by the Nazis. Living secretly in a cramped annex, in constant fear of being discovered and isolated from the outside world, days fluctuated between boredom, hunger, deprivation and terror. During the two years in hiding, young Anne Frank recorded her thoughts and feelings in her now world-famous diary. The play, adapted from Anne’s diary, made its theater debut in October 1955 and was an immediate critical and popular success. It won the Pulitzer Prize, the Critics Circle Prize and the Tony Award for best play in 1956. Anne Frank became a universal symbol of triumph of spirit over oppression. The play released a wave of emotion that finally broke through the silence with which the Germans had treated the Nazi period. Pima’s performances commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day 2013.

Beowulf Alley Theatre Company

Presents

Eugene O’Neill’s Lost Play

Exorcism

Beowulf Alley Theatre presents Exorcism by Eugene O’Neill Friday and Saturday, July 6th, 7th , 13th and 14th at 7:30 PM and Sunday July 8th at 2:30 PM at Beowulf Alley Theatre, 11 S. 6th Avenue in downtown Tucson. Tickets are $15. $12 for seniors, military and teachers. Our student price is only $8.

Recently rediscovered, this autobiographical one-act was buried by O’Neill. The play was performed by the Provincetown Players in 1920 for about two weeks and then quickly withdrawn. It is speculated that O’Neill was too uncomfortable with such an honest portrait of himself and his father. Exorcism is about a troubled young man and his difficult relationship with his family. It is something of a palimpsest for Long Days Journey Into Night, as the main character Ned is reminiscent to Jamie Tyrone.

Starring Evan Engle as Ned, Ken Bieder as Jimmy, David Swisher as Major, Mark Klugheit as Malloy and Michael Fenlason as Nordstrom.

This production will run Friday and Saturday, July 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th at 7:30PM and Sunday July 8th at 2:30PM.

Tickets run $8-$15 and can be purchased online, over the phone or at the door. Reservations and purchases can be made are 520-885-0555

         What is 'The Next Theatre'?

The Next Theatre is the new, experimental subgroup of Beowulf Alley Theatre looking to explore exciting and different ways to present performance. We will be playing with theatre 'traditions' and challenging audiences idea of what shows are and what they can do. We look to inspire conversation, provoke emotions and turn the typical theatre-going experience on it's head.

This Summer Debut season brings us an experimental mash-up of film and live performance with Joan is Burning. Followed by a look to the past with a recently found Eugene O'Neill one-act, Exorcism. Next we present Hope by Jem Street, an arizonan playwrite, which looks into what it takes to go into politics. In closing, we present an adaption by Joan O'Dwyer, The Body and the Bath. Joan is Burning is a satirical comedy of the near future. In 2018 New Orleans, Joan works for a public relations firm and has created a program that can sell anyone anything. Her love life in shambles, her only healthy relationship is with her phone/computer, her employer an avaricious, unprincipled executive, Joan must decide what she ought to do with such a newfound power. All the while an anonymous protest for the rights of women shadows her. Will Joan join the fight?

Hope

by Jem Street

Directed by Michael Fenlason

Hope is a new play and part of her graces trilogy that includes Faith and Love. Street’s work meditates on American life in the first part of the new millennium with humor, candor and a sense of history. Hope is the story of Joe Chandler, a Tennessee businessman being courted to run for the U.S. House of Representatives. Chandler must look back over his life and determine if he has “been a good enough man to be a politician.” In flashback his history with romantic relationships, a stormy relationship with his racist father, and all that he has been must be seen through this ironic prism.

This is a full-length play and the performance dates are Friday and Saturday July 20th, 21st, 27th, and 28th at 7:30 PM and Sunday July 22nd at 2:30 PM.

Tickets are available online, over the phone or at the door.          Wrapping our Summer Debut is...

The Body in the Bath

an adaption by Joan O’Dwyer

This play, adapted from Dorothy Sayers' first American printing of "Whose Body," takes place after World War I in England. Lord Peter is rich, intelligent, circumspect and genteel, but, dash it all, so very loveable. When he pairs up with Inspector Parker of Scotland Yard -- and is further aided by his trusty servant, Bunter -- the mystery of the naked body in the bath (wearing only pince nez, mind you!) is certain to be solved.

This Lord Peter Whimsy adaption will run August 3-18th, Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2:30pm. Note: No Sunday Performance August 19th.

Taste of Improv Class

The Studio for Actors is now offering a "Taste of Improv Class." Here's how it works. Just come on one Wednesday night from 6:30pm-8:00pm for only $30. This class is normally $40, but for the evenings of July 11 or July 25, you can attend for $30 for one class only, and see how much you love studying improv at The Studio. So, if you've always wondered (or if you've never wondered) if you would enjoy comedy improv, this is your chance to check it out.

Call (520) 881-2363 to sign up.  To qualify for the discounted price, you must say the words "Taste of Improv Class" when you call.

* Limit one $30 class per person.

Comedy Improvisation

You don't have to be a funny person to love and get a lot out of a comedy improv class. I can make you funny. Because you have to focus in this class, you can end up both taking a vacation from the stuff that goes on in your life, and there's a lot of healing with laughter. Your coach is a former Saturday Night Live cast member, and will give you the accents and the formats you can use as a "safety net." Improv is a great stress reliever and really encourages the ability to verbally communicate. So, come, play, have a ball, and enjoy releasing your own special creativity.

Also, for students of acting, improv enhances your auditions, loosens up the body, helps you think fast on your feet, introduces dialects, and sharpens your timing.4 consecutive Wednesday nights

6:30pm-8:00pm
Start on any Wednesday (but you must call first to sign up).
$40 per week
Don't worry if you have to miss one or even two of the four classes. You simply pay for the class you have to miss and then take class #5 free.  It's even possible to pay $160 at your first class, and then take your last three classes whenever you can make it. (I keep great records.)

To find out more or to sign up, please call Anna Risley at (520) 881-2363.

Also being offered at The Studio for Actors:
Radio/TV Voiceover Seminar
Audition Technique

Each of these classes is taught by Anna Risley at her Studio (The Studio for Actors), located on 6th Street, just off 4th Avenue.  Anna has 30 years of experience in film, television, voiceover, and stage acting.   To check out her resume, please visit The Studio for Actors website , or call her at (520) 881-2363 to sign up.

Bisbee's Obscure Productions Seeks Music Director

Bisbee's Obscure Productions is looking for a skilled team player to serve as music director and piano accompanist for their upcoming multigenerational production of HONK! in the spring of 2013. HONK! is a funny and just-challenging-enough family musical based on the story of the Ugly Duckling. HONK! won the 2000 Olivier Award (the British equivalent of the Tony® Award) for Best New Musical, competing against both The Lion King and Mama Mia.

The songs run a gamut of genres, for lots of fun and variety. The selected person will have the rare talent to coax the best out of amateur singers, possibly ages 9 on up. The rehearsal schedule is flexible, though BOP would prefer music rehearsals to be on Monday, Tuesday and/or Wednesday evenings with added music rehearsals on weekends later in the run. An honorarium will be provided.

Auditions will be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 2 & 3, 2013, beginning at 1:00 pm each day. Rehearsals and performances will be at the O.J. Squffy Theater at Central School Project, 43 Howell Ave. in Old Bisbee. Performances will be weekends, April 18 through May 5, 2013, evenings and matinees.

Interested musicians should contact Rae or Gilles at Bisbee's Obscure Productions (520) 432-2901 or theaterbisbee@gmail.com for more information and an interview.
