In a San Francisco loft, aspiring author Felix focuses his binoculars on a prostitute plying her trade. He complains to the landlord and has her evicted. He soon hears trouble pounding on his door in the form of Doris, not a prostitute but an aspiring "model and actress, thank you very much." She figures he owes her a bed for the night, an arrangement that leads to hilarity. Alan Alda and Diana Sands took the roles on Broadway, and George Segal and Barbra Streisand did so on film.

Arts Congress 2012 Banner

We need your voice at the State Capitol for Arts Congress

Wednesday, February 5

Now that we know that FY15 funding for the Arizona Commission on the Arts is NOT included in the proposed Executive Budget, your voice at the State Capitol on Wednesday, February 5 for  Arts Congress 2014 is even more critical.

The is the one special day of the year for arts and culture advocates, patrons, educators and business people to speak directly to their Arizona legislators about the importance of support for arts and culture in our state.

The FY15 Executive Budget released by the Governor earlier this month does not repeat the $1 million from the state "rainy day" fund that was allocated this year to the Arts Commission.

Last fall, the Arts Commission submitted a FY15 budget request of $2 million. The request was based on the remarkable impact this year's allocation already has had in growing grant allocations to arts organizations all over Arizona, and funding the Commission's new Community Catalyst Grant program and Arts Tank - two new initiatives designed to inspire innovative and entrepreneurial arts activities that contribute to local community and economic vitality.

If the Legislature does not, at least, repeat a $1 million allocation in FY15, Arizona arts and culture organizations will suffer serious setbacks in their economic recovery which in turn is contributing so much to the overall revitalization of our state's recovery from the Great Recession.

We need your help to tell this story - starting on February 5 at Arts Congress 2014.

Many issues remain to be resolved in negotiations between the Governor's office and the State Legislature. Based on feedback we are getting from key legislators who supported the arts last year, we are confident that with their help -- AND the help of arts advocates like you - we can secure an allocation for the Arts Commission in the final FY15 budget that the Legislature must pass.

But this will not be an easy task. Every one of our 90 state legislators need to hear about the special impacts the arts are having in their, home communities. That why every advocate voice will count at Arts Congress.

We believe $2 million would be a significant reinvestment in the arts and culture sector, but anything less than a repeat of the $1 million received this year will result in serious damage in the health of arts and culture organizations all over Arizona.

WACKY, FEARLESS "BOOM"

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Evan Werner and Dani Dryer in 'boom.'

Have you ever wondered what the world might be like today if, back when the Garden of Eden was new, it turned out Adam was gay and Eve’s rebellious streak included a lack of interest in being responsible for the entire human race?

What if this lack of compatibility in Paradise was so disruptive it required some rude Divine Intervention to kick-start the whole Genesis of Life thing?

If so…then get into a hyper-active state of mind and go see “boom” downtown in the Cabaret Space at the Temple of Music and Art. Ivy League playwright Peter Sinn Nachtreib is pushing against the envelope and thinking way outside the box in dreaming up this geek brain party that’s given a fearless production by the Winding Road Theater Ensemble.

WRTE’S artistic director Christopher Johnson is at the helm, keeping the actors’ intensity bumping against the redline of possibility. Theatergoers addicted to reality may find the assumptions in this story rather extreme, but that’s why arriving with empty arms and an open mind are pretty much essential.

Performed non-stop without intermission (there will be plenty of time for reflection later) the story suggests much more than it takes time to explain.

For example, Jules (Evan Werner) is a graduate biology student who placed a personals ad promising “sex to change the course of the world.”  That sounded good to cynical journalism student Jo (Dani Dryer), who shows up at Jules’ tiny apartment/lab ready for action.

But the action Jules has in mind is taking place in his tabletop fish tank where, we learn, he has detected fish behavior that proves the end of humankind is near.

Meanwhile…off to the side of the stage at her own desk of tools to manipulate the behavior of humans on Earth is Barbara (Avis Judd), herself no stranger to cynical attitudes about the meaning of life. In Heavenly terms she has angelic powers, but says she is merely the manager of this “exhibit.”

She also can’t resist getting more involved with Jules and Jo than an exhibit manager probably should – but that becomes part of the fun, too.

Nachtreib (who did major in theater and biology) is just getting his own career going as a playwright. It seems he has taken the surreal mindset of Christopher Durang (“The Marriage of Bette and Boo,” “Baby With the Bathwater”)and started pulling it into the 21st century.

As we in daily life watch the real world that is rising from today’s fantasy powers of digital technology, along with the decline of religion’s ability to inspire and the political chaos of splintered societies erupting in new wars every week, it’s clear that conventional theater just won’t be able to handle everything.

Some new forms of theater must be developed.

At this point in time (no pun intended) Nachtreib’s take on the situation is certainly as valid as any other.

So get on down to the Cabaret Space. See “boom” for yourself, think for yourself and decide for yourself…

“boom” plays through Feb. 9, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays, in the Cabaret Space at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott St. Tickets are $20, with discounts. Details and reservations, 520-401-3626, www.windingroadtheater.org

The classes will cover silent acting techniques used in mime to create an imagined world of illusion.

The seminar focus will be on what Rick calls the physical imagination and how the body knows before the mind comprehends. Rick’s work comes form his years of work with the renowned mime legend Marcel Marceau, and Rick’s study and practice of the pioneering techniques of Etienne Decroux. Seminar participants will have access to the incomparable talent and experience that Rick brings to Tucson from his global experience. Rick’s teaching is especially powerful in guiding participants in developing movement skills that deeply engage audiences, as Rick’s own performances demonstrate.

Using his own life, Tennessee Williams created this exquisite memory play. Amanda Wingfield is a fading southern belle who is determined to hold her family together in any way she can.  Her son, Tom, struggles to escape both his present and his past, but his love for his wounded sister, Laura, keeps him bound…forever compelled to tell the story of the night she met her gentleman caller. Filled with the heartbreaking beauty that marks Williams’ best work, The Glass Menagerie remains a compelling and timeless piece of theatre.

Etcetera Presents SHORT ATTENTION SPAN THEATRE

From: angela horchem [mailto:publicity@livetheatreworkshop.org]
Sent: Monday, January 27, 2014 2:35 PM
Subject: Etcetera Presents SHORT ATTENTION SPAN THEATRE

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ETCETERA presents the February edition of . . .

 SHORT ATTENTION SPAN THEATRE

30 Original Plays in 60 Minutes.

Two performances!

February 8 & 15 at 10:30 PM

Tickets $10 at the door • 327.4242 for tickets

Live Theatre Workshop • 5317 E Speedway Blvd.

www.livetheatreworkshop.org/shows/etcetera

All New Material!!!

The goal? All 30 plays must be performed in 60 minutes, and the clock is ticking.

The catch? The audience decides the order of the plays.

The reward? If the actors meet their 60-minute deadline, they get to eat cookies. If they don’t meet it, they get to watch the audience eat the cookies.

SHORT ATTENTION SPAN THEATRE is an original, ensemble-written show featuring 30 short plays in 60 minutes. Based on The Neo-Futurists’ TOO MUCH LIGHT MAKES THE BABY GO BLIND, these performances will take place on the second and third Saturday nights of nearly every month throughout the 2013-2014 Etcetera season. Each show will be performed in an entirely new order, decided by the audience. Each month will feature new, original material.

Originally created in the Fall of 2011 at the University of Arizona, this revival of SHORT ATTENTION SPAN THEATRE pushes the boundaries of what a two-minute play can be. SAST involves a mixture of sketch comedy and devised work.  The ensemble-written plays may be fiction or non-fiction, realist or abstract, movement-based or focused on spoken text. The only restriction upon the scripts is time. As a result, the show comments on current events, personal experiences, or any other pressing issues that the creators believe are important. SAST’s main goal is to explore theatrical expression within a time limit. Rather, we’re exploring 30 different theatre experiences within 60 minutes.

Upcoming performances (subject to change, please check website for updated information): February 8, 15; May 10, 17
