OLD PUEBLO PLAYWRIGHTS

25TH ANNUAL NEW PLAY FESTIVAL

Original roles in new plays written by local Tucson playwrights

Monday, March 7th, 6:00 P.M.

in the Rehearsal Hall (upstairs, behind the Cabaret Theater)

at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott, Downtown Tucson

No appointment necessary.  Actors are asked to perform a one-minute monologue during auditions, memorized or script in-hand.

Resume and photo are preferred but not required.

We are especially excited this year to be celebrating our 25th annual New Play Festival, where the community has the opportunity to participate in the development of stage plays by local playwrights through feedback and reaction. This year's festival, running April 6-9, is called Drama Under Construction.  Each play will be performed once—as a staged-reading, providing the actor with the opportunity to develop a character that has never been seen on stage before. Because the works are considered “under Construction," blocking, costumes, and settings will be kept to a minimum. Memorization is not required, although there will be from 3 to 6 rehearsals. The festival will be, and has been, well publicized for 25 years across Tucson's Theatre Community.

For more information, call Sydney Flynn, (520) 481-1783

Roadrunner Theatre Company Auditions

Subject: Roadrunner Theatre Company Auditions

Roadrunner Theatre Company is holding auditions for Leading Ladies by Ken Ludwig on Saturday March 5th , 2016 at 2 pm at the APCOT theater. The theater is located at 8892 E Tanque Verde Rd, at Bear Canyon and Tanque Verde. Auditions will consist of cold reads from the script. The show will be performed April 14th (preview) through May 1st . If you have any questions or cannot make the auditions, please call 520-834-7884.

This hilarious comedy is about two English Shakespearean actors, Jack and Leo, who find themselves so down on their luck that they are performing "Scenes from Shakespeare" on the Moose Lodge circuit in the Amish country of Pennsylvania. When they hear that an old lady in York, PA is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long lost English nephews, they resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. The trouble is, when they get to York, they find out that the relatives aren't nephews, but nieces!

MEG SNIDER (30s) A young woman who dreams of a bigger world beyond York PA, Meg is vivacious, warm, loyal, and has a great sense of humor. She has a fresh, natural beauty. She loves Shakespeare and dreams about being an actor. As the author says, “our play is all about Meg,” as she transforms from innocent obedience to self-confident woman.

LEO CLARK (40s) As Leo, he’s a Shakespearean actor with a British accent who masterminds the plot to steal Meg’s millions ... until he falls in love with her. As Maxine, she’s a chic and flamboyant diva who commands the stage and all those around her. A comedic tour-de-force, he/she must be able to switch between genders and voices constantly.

JACK GABLE (40s) As Jack, he’s a Shakespearean actor with a British accent, who is the faithful accomplice to Leo’s schemes. As Stephanie, she is shy and demure at first, but eventually grows more comfortable with her feminine side. Requires great comedic timing, physical humor, and a willingness to do anything to win the love of Audrey.

AUDREY (20s) An innocent girl that is kind and gullible, but she’s trying to improve herself and her vocabulary. Extremely attractive, very sweet and good-natured. She is pursued both by Butch and Jack. Enjoys playing Sebastian in Twelfth Night.

DUNCAN WOOLEY (40-60s) The local minister, he’s a good man at heart, but rather fussy, set in his ways, scatter-brained, and lives in his own world. He distains actors and is very suspicious of Leo and Jack. His telephone conversations with the police should demonstrate comedic timing and contrast his mild manner with occasional bursts of temper.

FLORENCE SNIDER (60-70s) Meg’s aunt, she’s the richest woman in York. Florence is extremely crusty, has terrible eyesight, and is a tough old broad. Must switch quickly between sweetness and anger, life and apparent death.

DOC MYERS (50s+) The country doctor, he’s a cantankerous, likeable curmudgeon that takes no guff from anyone and often spars with Duncan and Florence. He’s also the Chief Moose in the local Moose Lodge. Doc is a loving father to Butch. Also plays a “rollicking” Sir Toby Belch in the Twelfth Night scenes.

BUTCH MYERS (20s) A former high school football star, Butch isn’t the brightest bulb, but he is earnest and sincere, with a good heart. Loves Audrey. Argues with Doc, but they adore each other. Steals the Twelfth Night scenes as Sir Andrew Aguecheek.

Hide your kids, hide your wife!

Don Giovanni: the man, the myth and the legend. He can't resist women and women can't resist him.  With so many conquests, his servant Leporello can barely keep track of them all! Giovanni's attention comes in the form of harassment and lies, and rages unchecked until the father of the beautiful Donna Anna arrives to put him in his place. So beware, this lecherous lothario is "climbing in your windows and snatching your people up!"

"Baritone Morgan Smith gives an electrifying performance as Don Giovanni, radiating saturnine power, dark magnetism and cruel charm. The Rogue Theatre's 2016-17 Season!

From: The Rogue Theatre [mailto:rogue@theroguetheatre.org]
Sent: Friday, February 26, 2016 5:04 AM
Subject: Join us for The Rogue's 2016-17 Season!

The Rogue Theatre

300 E. University Blvd., Tucson, AZ  85705 - 520-551-2053 - www.TheRogueTheatre.org

Dear Friends,

We are thrilled to announce the 2016-17 Rogue Season! The plays we've chosen for the season are full of mystery, drama, laughter, important ideas, beautiful language, interesting characters, and wonder. Read below some of our reasons for choosing these five beauties, and then join us as a Rogue Season Subscriber. Tickets are on sale today!

The Rogue Theatre's

2016-17 Season of Plays

Angels in America Part One: Millennium Approaches

By Tony Kushner
September 8 - 25, 2016

Still looking for a Production Sponsor!

When Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes was first produced in 1993, it won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Tony Award for Best Play, and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play. Its depiction of gay life in the 1980s is extraordinarily rich and thought-provoking, full of angels and ghosts, drug addicts and everyday people. Now, 23 years after it was first produced, we are still struck by its relevance and humanity.

Uncle Vanya

By Anton Chekhov
November 3 - 20, 2016

Production sponsors: Meg & Peter Hovell

Chekhov's melancholic masterpiece has long been on our list of plays we'd like to do. Full of longing and regret for wasted lives, the play speaks of a society on the verge of sweeping change. Each of the characters is caught in this change as the Russian estate is readied for sale. Uncle Vanya is especially wonderful to see performed by an ensemble company that has worked together over the years, as the Rogue ensemble has.

The White Snake

By Mary Zimmerman

January 12 - 29, 2017

Production sponsors: Barbara Martinsons & Larry Boutis

Zimmerman's plays are always magical and beautiful. We saw the first production of The White Snake at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2012 and immediately knew we wanted to produce it at The Rogue. Based on an ancient Chinese fable, the play tells the story of the white snake who transforms herself into a beautiful woman and comes down from the mountain to learn what it is to be human. The story is at once fanciful and deeply moving.

Penelope

By Enda Walsh

March 2 - 19, 2017

Production sponsors: Pat & John Hemann

Four years ago we produced The New Electric Ballroom by Enda Walsh, and we've wanted to return to his unique Irish voice ever since. Penelope is a contemporary telling of the story of four suitors who await Odysseus' return in the bottom of an empty swimming pool. Dressed in Speedos, they each try their luck at wooing Penelope with songs, routines, and poems. We alternately laugh out loud and ache for their hopeless attempts for love.

Macbeth

By William Shakespeare

April 27 - May 14, 2016

Production sponsors: John & Joyce Ambruster

To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,
To the last syllable of recorded time . . .

Nowhere in the Shakespearean canon is his poetry as rich as it is in Macbeth. Over the years, we've loved exploring many of Shakespeare's lesser-known plays, but this year we wanted to dive directly into one of his best-known, best-loved plays, mostly because of its exquisite poetry. And of course, there are the witches . . . !

"DOG SEES GOD" AND A PROMISING FUTURE

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Last week's surprise theater hit of early 2016 is “Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead,” an off-Broadway success in 2005 written by Bert V. Royal, in a fine local production by a cast of “mostly Catalina Foothills” students directed by Stefanie Tedards.

“Dog Sees God” is the debut production of Acting Innocent Theatre, a new company of young adults “looking to cause social change in the Tucson area through theater.

“Acting Innocent aims to appeal to a wide range of audience demographics while also working to ignite artistic passion among young adults by visiting schools and performing material which any generation can connect with.”

Lofty goals indeed, but the quality of this group's first production is encouraging. The play itself imagines all the main characters of the “Peanuts” strip as high school upperclassmen, with their names changed a little bit in order avoid being sued by the “Peanuts” corporate owners.

CB wears a yellow shirt that looks exactly like the one Charlie Brown wore. Van is a reclusive piano student who loves Chopin. Changes like that.

Being adolescents now, the daily problems of these kids involve suicide, teen violence, eating disorders, drug use, rebellion, sexual relations, child sexual abuse and that never-ending search for identity. Most refreshing is the candid language Royal has provided.

These teens make the most of their opportunities. Scenes that have a startling rawness become heartfelt when this cast does them. Clearly they all care about the characters they portray. And so, we care, too.

“Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead” plays at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 25-27, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, at The Community Playhouse, 1881 N. Oracle Road. The theater entrance and a parking lot are in back. Tickets are $15 at the door.

DEATH IS "NO WAY" TO BECOME FAMOUS

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Steve Wood and Amanda Gremel in their  dance of death.

It isn't often that Tucson theater offers you the chance to enjoy a singing death scene. Yet, here is Steve Wood dying onstage with a song on his lips in the Douglas Cohen/William Goldman comedy musical “No Way To Treat A Lady” at Live Theatre Workshop.

This lively romp through the life of a frustrated actor who makes being a serial killer his chosen art form also echoes a little film noir shimmer, where a couple of guns are drawn, as the detective tracks down his man while trying to deal with more mundane problems such as keeping his girlfriend happy and living in the basement of his obsessive mom's house.

It is enough to remind you of the adventures of Guy Noir in the city that knows how to keep its secrets on National Public Radio's “A Prairie Home Companion.”

Also in this doughty cast are Kit Runge as Morris Brummel (incessantly called Mo Brummel) the frustrated detective, Janet Roby as Sarah Stone the wary love interest and Amanda Gremel playing a variety of characters including Mo's mom.

Annette Hillman is director of this swirling human drama, with musical direction by Sarah Ross. The other musicians are Brianna Petty and Valentin Lopez, their "orchestra pit" a black box at the side of the stage.

While none of the songs are particularly melodic in a “West Side Story” sense of the word, each contains lyrics that keep moving the plot forward. So pay attention to the words.

Even though Kit the actor can't get the press to notice his acting, he does get some attention for killing people. He becomes obsessed with getting his murders mentioned on the front page of the New York Time. Since the play is set in the Big Apple in the 1960s, it takes more than just one or two murders to get the newspaper's attention.

Meanwhile Mo is finding success as a member of New York City's finest, getting promoted to detective and then to being top detective. But what he really wants is a real life with a real girlfriend...sigh.

Roby gets just the right air of Sarah's traditional girl-next-door sweetness, unspoiled by the millions of dollars that is her inheritance.

Wood is absolutely terrific playing the killer, who takes on a variety of personalities to disarm his victims (all played by Gremel, who is also Mo's mom in cat's eye glasses).

A special note should be given to Stephanie Frankenfield the production's costumer. Every actor's every entrance is made more memorable by a revolving door of her eye-catching garb.

“No Way To Treat A Lady” runs through March 19 with performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays, at Live Theatre Workshop, 5317 E. Speedway Blvd. Tickets are $20, discounts available. For details and reservations: 520-327-4242, livetheatreworkshop.org

No Frills Spring 2016: March 5th

7:30 PM at ZUZI! Theater in The Historic Y
$10 at the door

ZUZI! Dance presents its spring, biannual No Frills Dance Happenin'. A variety of performers throughout Tucson and Southern Arizona come to share fresh and innovative works from various stages of the creative process. The works range from serious to silly and some are presented here for the first time.

"The 'No Frills' concert has come to serve two important purposes," says ZUZI!'s Director of Arts Education, Nanette Robinson. "It has become a popular venue for showcasing youth performers, schools, and youth choreography and it continues to be venue for local choreographers to take creative risks with new work." The show has been described as an open mic for dance and is a unique opportunity to perform in a relaxed setting. As the name suggests, there are no frills-no fancy lights, no fancy sets-just dancers, choreographers, and experimentation.
