Welcome to Almost, Maine—a place so far north it’s almost not in the United States, almost in Canada, and not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting organized. So it almost doesn’t exist. One cold, clear winter night, as the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, the residents of Almost, Maine find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream.

SUMMER REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

 

 

Summer session runs June 1 through July 26. Spring classes conclude on May 16 — there will be a two-week break before summer begins, with limited private lesson availability during that window.

Some classes are open for public registration on the website (Main Menu › Online Registration). For evening circus and aerial classes, registration is handled by email — contact info@circusacademytucson.com to secure your preferred time.

Summer class times are more limited than spring — early registration is strongly encouraged.

Fall registration is expected to open in June.

About the Play

Emery is content living in her treehouse, communing with her beloved plants. Her sister Hazel is miserable, grinding away at the only diner in Millerville to support the two of them. And Luanne is yearning for something — anything — to bring meaning into her life.

When Emery's YouTube videos of her plant experiments accidentally launch a cult — a CULT! — all three women are plunged into a very different kind of chaos. Each must find her own way to live, to love, and to decide what to believe.

Equal parts warm and whimsical, Rooted is a glimpse into everyday moments that reminds us of the lasting importance of family, friendship, and the quiet magic that surrounds us when we're paying attention.

 

 

 

About the Playwright

Deborah Zoe Laufer is an acclaimed American playwright whose work has been produced at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, the Cleveland Playhouse, Geva Theatre, the Humana Festival, and hundreds of other theatres around the world.

Her plays include End Days, Be Here Now, Informed Consent (New York Times Critic's Pick), Leveling Up, Out of Sterno, The Last Schwartz, and The Last Yiddish Speaker, among many others. She is a recipient of the Helen Merrill Playwriting Award and the Lilly Award.

Rooted has been produced at Oil Lamp Theatre (Glenview, IL), Amphibian Stage (Fort Worth, TX), WAM Theatre (Lenox, MA), and Opera House Arts (Stonington, ME), before arriving at Live Theatre Workshop for its Tucson premiere.

About the Festival

Tucson is home to some of the most talented emerging playwrights in the country, and the Young Playwrights of Tucson Competition is your chance to catch their rising voices before they hit the big time.

These student-produced plays are full of outstanding wit, humor, and imagination. Each year, this beloved festival elevates the stories of the next generation of artists — inspiring, delighting, and bringing hope to sold-out audiences.

Under the mentorship of Live Theatre Workshop's professional team, student playwrights, directors, actors, and technicians come together for an intensive week of workshops that culminates in three fully produced performances.

 

 

 

Program Highlights

• Open to students in grades 6–12 for the 2025–2026 school year
• All scripts judged anonymously — every playwright competes on equal footing
• Selected plays are paired with mentoring playwrights for script development
• One-week intensive workshop camp: May 26–31, 2026 (8:00 AM – 4:00 PM daily)
• Three professional performances on the Live Theatre Workshop stage
