Shakespeare's Globe On Screen:

"Antony & Cleopatra"

Recorded Live in London at the Globe Theatre

Directed by Jonathan Munby

Sunday, June 28th at 2pm ONLY

General Admission: $15, $13 (Students & Seniors)

The Screening Room

"The third of our Roman Tragedies, Antony & Cleopatra picks up Antony's story many years after Julius Caesar. Virtue and vice, transcendent love and realpolitik combine in Shakespeare's greatest exploration of the conflicting claims of sex and power, all expressed in a tragic poetry of breath-taking beauty and magnificence.  The Globe's 2014 envisioning of this iconic play encapsulates these themes whilst deftly threading a sense of comedy throughout, and Olivier Award-winner Eve Best's Cleopatra 'kisses the audience' (Guardian) with her 'magnetically humorous' (Evening Standard) performance."

Cleopatra, the alluring and fascinatingly ambiguous Queen of Egypt, has bewitched the great Mark Antony, soldier, campaigner and now one of the three rulers of the Roman Empire. When Antony quarrels with his fellow leaders and throws in his lot with Cleopatra, hi...

Dear members of the Tucson performance community,

This is a request to help a member of one of the most treasured families in Tucson, the Schumachers. Collectively they have done a great deal for the Tucson film and theatre scene, and work tirelessly to better our potentials to be a sustainable industry as well as nourish the artistic community here.

Joan Schumacher is struggling with a potentially life-threatening issue and we have set up a fundraiser to help.

If you cannot donate, then you can help another way by sharing the information on social media- Facebook, Twitter, etc- about what others can do to help.

The link to the fundraiser page is here: http://www.youcaring.com/joan-schumacer-375946

Joan represents the best ethos in the Tucson community- she has given many free hours in working with local actors and encouraging them to pursue their dreams.  Please be a part of that ethos by taking a few minutes of your time to help out.

Mariachi Madness

By Mari Herreras

If there's one thing you do this weekend, please ... please for the love of Tucson, education and all things mariachi, get down to El Casino Ballroom, 427 E. 26th St., South Tucson, Saturday, June 27, 2 p.m. to midnight. On stage will be Tucson mariachis, folklórico, norteno, Latino pop and Tajano all to help raise funds for Daniel Buckley's documentary, The Mariachi Miracle. The film and book project traces the impact Tucson youth mariachi and folklórico programs have had on the city and across the country. Admission is $10 to experience Mariachi Luz de Luna, Vox Urbana, Tejano star Joe Ahumada's new band Latin Society, Conjunto Bravo, plus an all-star lineup of the youth mariachi and folklórico groups. Buckley, who worked as a music writer for the Tucson Citizen for more than 30 years, has been a huge supporter of the Tucson Latino community and its music scene. Besides a day and evening of music, there will be a raffle, silent auction and merch for sale. Wavelab Studio's Craig Shumacher will be recording the event, with plans to release a fundraising CD for the film. A GoFundMe crowd funding effort will be launched shortly, along with other fund raising activities. Thinking dinner, too? Mariachi Aztlan parents are doing a $5 spaghetti dinner. NEW BLOCK OF DATES/TIMES ADDED: Armor Releasing Workshop

From: Royce Sparks [mailto:roycesparks@gmail.com]
Sent: Wednesday, June 24, 2015 5:08 PM
Subject:

The Armor Releasing Workshop is full- a new block of dates and times have been created in the afternoons. Please see below and inquire if you would like a spot!

Armor Releasing Workshop: Restoring the Actor's Emotional Availability

A three-session workshop that introduces participants to the technique of armor releasing, a physical contact technique based on 20th century mind-body theories and used today for actors looking to create deep, true emotions on cue.

When: June 29, 30, July 1, Tucson, AZ. Three sessions total.

Dates and times:

June 29: 1:30-5pm

June 30: 1:30-4:30

July 1: 1:30-4:30

Where: KU Studios; 6066 N. Oracle Road, Tucson, AZ.

Cost: Free, pending a commitment to all three sessions. Places are limited to six participants.

Participants will be asked to bring two well-memorized monologues that will be coached using the technique.

More information:

What are some of the things that frustrate an actor? Stress, pressure, fear of failure, and inability to deliver deep, true emotions on cue. These are just a sampling of the many fears actors deal with daily. In the face of these genuine workplace concerns the body, the actor's instrument, shuts down, preventing the actor from being alive and free. The actor's precious emotional availability and sensitivity becomes locked in these habitual tensions, and what many actors feel like blocks, inabilities and a lack of talent is simply a matter of physiology.

This workshop is based off of the work of Wilhelm Reich's theory of body armor- the body's muscular suppression of emotions from childhood- which has been further developed for actors by Niki Flacks. In discovering their own emotional armor and how to release it, the actor can begin to develop a way of working that frees them, enlivens their work and returns their natural emotional availability as a matter of technique and not chance.

Disclaimer: Please note that this workshop will be conducted in a safe, supportive atmosphere. Armor releasing uses gentle, respectful physical contact, and basic movement exercises. This workshop is not ideal for participants uncomfortable with physical contact and potentially intense emotional experiences.

This workshop is ideal for the following people:

·         actors who struggle with bringing true emotion and aliveness into their performances

·         actors who suffer from performance anxiety and stress

·         performers seeking tools for being truthful, spontaneous, and impulsive in their work

·         performers wanting to bring more authenticity into their performances

·         performers of other mediums, including physical theatre, dance, puppetry, performance poetry, and storytelling looking to be more engaged and alive in their work

PLACES AND RESERVATIONS: E-mail Roycesparks@gmail.com to reserve your space now.

About the instructor:

Royce Sparks is a London based actor, director and acting teacher with roots in Tucson. He specializes in the Meisner technique and, as the founder of his international company Meisner Technique International, has launched training intensives in the US, Canada, London and Berlin. THESE "SPACE WARS" WILL TOUCH YOUR HEART

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

When you think about it, if Ella Fitzgerald had married Darth Vader her name would be Ella Vader!

If that joke makes you laugh, head quickly to Gaslight Theater, where the sci-fi loving gang has put together a galactic-level production of “Space Wars,” written and directed by Peter Van Slyke.

Hyper-humor to match the hyper-drive of this interstellar adventure makes the free popcorn pop on everyone's table as the celebratory references to Steven Spielberg's iconic opus keep rolling.

The best part is knowing that Gaslight Theatre loves the whole “Star Wars” mystique and would never consider ridiculing any part of it.

For example, spunky WD-40 is the spittin' image of his android cousin on the big screen, R2D2, all white and stubby, rolling around while spouting the same unspeakable vocabulary of high-pitched tones.

But the real scene-stealer, just like he was in Spielberg's first film, is the towering hirsute hero known simply as Shuey, howling out his emotions.

All the other elements you would expect to be there, are there. The Force that gives these Galactic Knights their inner strength, the humming laser swords, green-faced Yoga's backwards syntax, Princess Layla's twin-bun hairdo – and lots more.

All the roles are double cast. Jake Chapman was Shuey the night I went. Janee Page played Layla, leader of the Stellar Union. Gaslight newcomer Christopher Younggren donned the black helmet and intimidating breathing apparatus of Darth Vader. Making his verbs do all the work from back at the end of every sentence was Jacob Brown as Yoga.

The actual plot is a bit of a mash-up of favorite moments from a few films of the eponymous series. One of the most effective is the early sequence when that hologram call for help is received from Princess Leia, er, Princess Layla.

My personal favorite from the first movie, the nightclub scene with all manner of outer space travelers, is in there. There is the second-hand space ship that's reluctant to start, the instant deep-freeze treatment by sinister forces and of course the iconic moment when Duke Skyfighter (Mike Yarema) learns the identity of his father.

Th musical tribute numbers include “Oh What A Night,” “Don't Stop Believin',” “Spirit in the Sky” and “Baby Hold On To Me.”

The aftershow Olio turns to the Disney corporation for inspiration, presenting sketches presenting songs from several of Disney's favorite movies.

No movie titles are mentioned but you will immediately recognize the Little Mermaid. All manner of aquatic creatures join in singing “Under the Sea.”

Back on land, David Orley in his best bear outfit sings “The Bare Necessities.” There is a medley of songs with snowmen and an ice queen. Then comes a very bouncy “Hakuna Matata.” Blasting back from the past is “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Supercalifrag....(you know the rest),” ending with the evergreen “Beauty and the Beast.”
