Traveling Through Time

Tucson, Arizona –  Join faculty and students from the School of Theatre, Film & Television as we take a cinematic journey through time…from Ancient Greece to World War II, to the distant future! Time travel has been a popular trope in film, television and literature for over a century. Time travel stories encourage us to reflect on where we've been, and where we're headed. Over the course of the year, we will watch science fiction and fantasy classics from the '60s, '70s, and '80s – films about time travel that will thrill you, make you laugh and make you think.

The Widescreen Wednesdays program features not only the screening of a complete feature film, but a lively and informative introduction to each film by a UA professor. Plus, a student from the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film & Television will present one of his or her short films!

FEATURED WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2016 - 7PM - UA CENTER FOR CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY

Back to the Future

Marty McFly's high school principal warns him to stay away from crazy Doc Brown…but how can Marty, when Doc has built a time machine out of a DeLorean? Suddenly, Marty finds himself back in 1955, where he must convince his teenaged parents to fall in love…or he'll never be born! Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd star in Robert Zemeckis' classic '80s sci-fi comedy, ranked the #10 best American science fiction film of all time by the American Film Institute!

Winding Road Theatre Ensemble

presents

Julius Caesar

OCTOBER 20 - NOVEMBER 5, 2016

Tucson, Arizona – Winding Road Theatre Ensemble is proud to bring William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar to the Tucson stage. Adapted by local playwright Michael Fenlason, this tragic tale of power, conspiracy and revenge will be set in Washington DC and feature an all-female cast.

'It seemed timely that this story is re-told in the context of what we are seeing happen culturally today inside and outside politics', said Susan Arnold, Artistic Director at Winding Road Theatre Ensemble.  'It is a wildly complex and fascinating work, and it was important to us to examine the thematic elements of ultimate ambition through an alternative lens. For us that meant challenging not only how we see what is occurring at the hub of power in DC, but also how the roles of women in this environment are changing dramatically.'

The mission of Winding Road Theatre Ensemble is to tell dynamic, theatrical stories that illuminate the human condition.  'We hope to honor that mission with this production by discovering new layers in Shakespeare's work through a contemporary feminine voice,' said Michael Fenlason, who is also the director of the production.

In a continuing effort to engage youth, WRTE will engage local high school students through matinee performances that will include pre-show study guides and post-show discussions.

Tickets for the event can be purchased online at www.windingroadtheatre.org or 520-401-3626.  The production will run October 20-November 5, 2016 at the Temple of Music and Art Cabaret Theater, 330 S. Scott Avenue, Tucson. Student, Senior and Group rates are available.

WINDING ROAD THEATER ENSEMBLE'S vision is to sustain theater as a viable art form by offering programs that not only inspire and educate, but also challenge us as a theater company to move in tandem with the rest of the world. We ask questions, reach beyond what we know, and we are committed to theater as a vehicle for change.

Subject: Introducing the NEW Arizona Grand Ol' Opry Night at The Gaslight Music Hall

INTRODUCING The Arizona Grand Ol' Opry!

The ARIZONA GRAND OPRY is a new live music production organization dedicated to developing new talent by paying homage to the roots of American Country music. Drawing on the repertoire of the legendary artists that set the American experience to song, the Arizona Grand Opry is a membership-driven showcase for those who have chosen to pursue the performing arts of country music in all its forms and styles.

The opportunity to showcase local and regional country music talent in a professional setting has been greatly lacking in the southwest. The Arizona Grand Opry sets out to fill the void by providing a forum for talented performers who share a passion for country music to develop and refine their skills (regardless of prior experience). The Opry will provide an environment that promotes education and experience-building by partnering developing talent with seasoned professional musicians, and allowing them to polish their skills in a live performance setting.

The final product of the ARIZONA GRAND OPRY and its family of performers will be a bi-monthly live concert at the beautifully-appointed GASLIGHT MUSIC HALL in Oro Valley, AZ. The production will be a public, ticketed event designed to showcase the passion and hard work of these talented up-and-comers as they perform country music classics backed by a live band comprised of music industry veterans. We encourage all music-lovers to come and be a part of this amazing process; whether onstage or in the audience, it's an amazing opportunity to watch the superstars of tomorrow as they begin their journey today!

*Tickets are only $12 for adults and $8 for children

DESCRIPTION:

There's a brand new opera company in town—and it's producing shows in English, for a modern audience.  Some of the seasoned professionals at the Arizona Rose Theatre Company have begun a new venture.  The AZ Rose Opera Company (www.azroseopera.com), a branch of the Arizona Rose Arts Organization, is kicking off its first season with a double billed production of Gian Carlo Menotti's "The Telephone" and "The Medium" at the Historic Y Zuzi Theatre.  The company is working to appeal to a wide variety of theatre and opera goers, using a combination of high quality production values mixed with professional singing and musicianship.  The cast of "The Medium" is headed up by Mackenzie Romriell, mezzo soprano, who revisits the role of Madame Flora after a successful performance with the University of Arizona Opera.  The rest of the talented cast includes Jonathan Holmes (Toby), Gabriella Carillo (Monica), Sehoon Kim (Mr. Gobineau), Kate Scally (Mrs. Gobineau), and Samantha Luna (Mrs. Nolan).  The production is directed by Luke S. Howell.

"The Telephone" is a comic opera in one act that tells the story of Ben, a young man determined to ask his girlfriend Lucy to marry him--if only he can get her to hang up the phone first.  This hilarious, twenty minute long opera feels like it was written for our modern society, with it's obsession with social media and the struggle to connect with someone right in front of you while technology keeps pulling you away.  It was first performed in New York City as part of a double billed production with a much darker opera, Menotti's "The Medium."  This dramatic opera in two acts tells the story of a fraudulent psychic, Madame Flora, and her descent into madness as she begins to experience what appear to be real supernatural phenomena. The opera also portrays the burgeoning romance between her daughter Monica, and Toby, her non-verbal ward.  Performed on the weekend before Halloween, and designed with special effects and theatrical finesse, this opera will leave you wondering whether or not the ones we love ever truly leave us.

Tucson, AZ. September 23, 2016 - Roadrunner Theatre Company continues its season of Broadway hits with Yasmina Reza’s Tony-award winning God of Carnage, which will run November 4-20 at the new Alliance Performance Center (APCOT) at 8892 East Tanque Verde Road.

“A comedy of manners only without the manners,” God of Carnage gives us two upper middle class New York couples whose children have had a playground fight that cost one of them some teeth, and who meet for an evening of civilized discussion to work things out. Violence, they want to show their children, is never the answer. But violence — along with rage, hysteria, confrontation, and the stripped-bare fault lines of two relationships and four human beings — are what they show their audience, and themselves, in ninety breathtaking minutes. As director Mark Klugheit notes, Reza’s play bears a strong resemblance to Edward Albee’s modern classic Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? — as in a single evening two couples meeting for the first time find their darkest selves — and their humanity — revealed in ways none of them could have imagined.

When the play opened on Broadway, the New York Times called it “a streamlined anatomy of the human animal [that] incites the kind of laughter that comes from the gut, as involuntary as hiccups or belching....” Roadrunner’s terrific cast includes Steve McKee, India Osborne, Nikki Heinrich and Roger Owen, and will afford theater-goers an evening filled with “Oh my God, did I just see that?" moments.
