Concerts Celebrate 300th Anniversary of Padre Kino’s Death
orchestra, two choruses present Mozart’s coronation mass
TUCSON, AZ – A collaborative celebration of the 300th anniversary of Padre Kino’s death will feature Mozart’s Coronation Mass in C major performed by the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra, Tucson Masterworks Chorale, Catalinas Community Chorus and a quartet of vocal soloists.
Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino was born on August 10, 1645 and died on March 15, 1711. Among many achievements, he founded an extensive chain of missions including San Xavier del Bac, and he was among the first European explorers of the Tucson region.
The concerts will be presented Saturday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the historic St. Augustine Cathedral downtown and again on Sunday, March 13 at 3 p.m. in the Catalina Foothills High School Auditorium.
The soloists will be soprano Christi Amonson, mezzo-soprano Angela Diel, tenor Dennis Tamblyn and baritone Seth Kershisnik. SASO Music Director Linus Lerner will conduct.
The showpiece of the concert is the Coronation Mass, written by Mozart when he was in his early twenties and court organist and composer at the Salzburg Cathedral. This compact setting of the mass, lasting less than 30 minutes, will be performed by the four soloists, the combined choruses and the orchestra. It is bright and often joyful in mood, using lively rhythms. The orchestration is colorful, including oboes, bassoons, trumpets, horns, trombones and timpani as well as strings.
The first half of the concert will feature the orchestra and each of the soloists. The program opens with Samuel Barber’s famous Adagio for Strings. Amonson will sing “Pie Jesu” from Fauré’s Requiem, Diel will sing Lascia Ch’io Pianga from Handel’s Rinaldo, and Kershisnik will sing Fecit Potentiam from C.P.E. Bach’s Magnificat. Tamblyn will sing Schubert’s Ave Maria. Three selections from Vivaldi’s Gloria will complete the first half: Domine Deus with Amonson, Qui Sedes Ad Dexteram Patris with Diel and Laudamus Te with both sopranos.
The choruses will be featured in The Heavens are Telling from Haydn’s Creation and How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place from Brahms’ German Requiem.
Admission is free for those aged 17 and under. Tickets are $20 for adults and can be purchased from orchestra and choir members, at the door or in advance online at www.sasomusic.org. Marcela Molina conducts the 61-year-old Tucson Masterworks Chorale. A native of Bogota, Colombia, she is a doctoral candidate at the University of Arizona, artistic director of The Tucson Girls Chorus and music director of Christ Presbyterian Church. She previously was assistant conductor of the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus.
Cyndee Chaffee conducts the Catalinas Community Chorus. Her career highlights include singing with the Roger Wagner Chorale for many years, the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Chorus and London Symphony Chorus for two years, and the Dale Warland Singers in St. Paul, Minnesota where she also was professor of clarinet at Northwest College. She moved to Tucson in 2002 and has served as music director at several churches, currently King of Glory Lutheran Church in Tempe.
Soprano Amonson was featured soloist on SASO’s China tour last winter and in its 30th-anniverary concert featuring Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. Opera News described her sound as “liquid silver.” This season Christi has sung Adele in Die Fledermaus with Opera Delaware and Queen Esther with the Wieck Chamber Orchestra and other solos with the Tucson Chamber Artists, Reveille and the Sons of Orpheus.
From Brazil, mezzo-soprano Diel is completing her doctorate at the UA. She has sung oratorios by Bach, Pergolesi and Saint-Saens, operas including Carmen, Rigoletto and Magic Flute and with orchestras, including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Choral Fantasy. She specializes in German Lied and Brazilian music.
Baritone Kershisnik’s love of classical singing began when he sang as a child in the ensemble of Amahl and the Night Visitors with Utah Lyric Opera. He is completing his second year as a doctoral candidate at the UA and was the voice winner of the 2009 UA Concerto/Solo Competiotin. His favorite opera performances include the title roles in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Gianni Schicchi.
After completing a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biophysics, tenor Tamblyn changed career paths and is pursuing his doctorate in voice at the UA. Recent roles include Jenik in Smetana's The Bartered Bride, Fenton in Nicolai's Merry Wives of Windsor and Paolino in Cimarosa's The Secret Marriage.
SASO’s Lerner has conducted orchestras, operas, choruses and instrumental groups in his native Brazil, the United States, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Spain, Mexico and China. He also serves as artistic director of the Bayou City Performing Arts in Houston.
Lerner completed his musical arts doctoral degree in orchestral conducting at the UA.
