Monica Bauer, a playwright who divides her time between Tucson and New York, is bringing her play "The Real Machiavelli" to Tucson as part of a national anti-Trump protest sponsored by the national group Bad Hombres and Nasty Women. The play was first produced at the famous 13th Street Repertory Theater off-off Broadway, directed by Cheryl King. The staged reading on President's Day will be directed by the playwright, and features well-known Tucson actors including Tony Caprile as Machiavelli, Maria Caprile as his wife, Roger Owen as Machiavelli's best friend, and Alida Gunn as Machiavelli's mistress. Rounding out the cast are two actors fresh from the recent Tucson production of "The Fantasticks," Damian Garcia and Chad Davies.

The play, which will be presented free of charge, is a historical fantasy built around the writing of the most infamous book on political skullduggery every written: "The Prince." It imagines the book springing from the pen of Machiavelli's mistress, acting as Niccolo Machiavelli's ghost writer. When the Mistress demands public credit for the book, something must be done. There are echoes of our current political situation in the play, and echoes of the #MeToo movement as well. The play couldn't be more timely, given the headlines about Trump and about domestic violence against women. The play is the last even at the second annual Community Volunteer Fair, taking place at the Historic Y from 3:30 to 6pm on President's Day, February 19th.

Bauer is one of two founder/organizers, along with Shawn Burke, of the Community Volunteer Fair, first held last year at Tucson's Historic Y, where over 65 social change organizations came together to recruit new activists in response to the threat presented by the administration of Donald Trump. This year's second Community Volunteer Fair may be even bigger than the first, including for the first time mini-workshops on such topics as fake news and registering new voters. Bauer is an award-winning playwright whose work has been produced in New York and regionally, and internationally at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, and the Brighton Fringe Festival in England.
