Lovers in Summer
Lovers by Irish dramatist Brian Friel opens this weekend!
Holly Griffith directs this bittersweet and ground-breaking hit from Ireland and Broadway 1968. "Like Horton Foote and August Wilson, Brian Friel takes everyday speech and turns it into something not too far removed from poetry. He has a great ear—and a great heart." –The Wall Street Journal
Originally written in two parts –Winners and Losers – Winners (part one) follows a starry-eyed teenage couple in a rural Irish town, grappling with an unexpected pregnancy and the influences of family, religion, and their own feelings of love and terror.
Featuring Bryn Booth, Adam Denoyer, Claire Hancock, and Christopher Pankratz and music director Jake Sorgen, the Tucson production of Lovers (Winners) plays Thursdays through Sundays at the Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre June 28-July 8.
In a career that spanned more than 50 years until his death in 2015, Brian Friel published 24 plays including Philadelphia, Here I Come! and the Tony- and Olivier-Award winning Dancing at Lughnasa. In Lovers, Friel experiments with form: two actors portray the teenagers meeting on a hilltop ostensibly to study together, but instead taking turns to plan and fret about their future. A second story, narrated by a second couple, depicts what happens after the young lovers leave the hill. The wistful and funny play carries audiences along like a river, and leaves them stunned with a heart-wrenching ending.
Underwritten by Planned Parenthood, The Scoundrel & Scamp's production of Lovers (Winners) will mark the first time Friel's play will be seen on stage in Tucson. The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre will be sharing all donations with Planned Parenthood for this show.
