Tucson: Beowulf Alley Theatre Announces Its 2009-2010 Main Stage Season!

From: theatre [mailto:theatre@beowulfalley.org]

Beowulf Alley Announces Its 2009-2010 Main Stage Season!

(Feb. 26, 2009 – Tucson, AZ) Beowulf Alley Theatre Company at 11 South 6th Avenue proudly announces the 5 plays selected for the 2009-20 10 Main Stage.

The Vertical Hour by David Hare
Directed by Philip Bennett
September25 –October 11,2009

The Vertical Hour is a thought-provoking exploration of how the political can sometimes intersect, collide with and ultimately dismantle the personal. While the play is positively brimming with cogent and fascinating arguments involving the current political situation, the production only fitfully succeeds in bringing this story to life. Hare fills The Vertical Hour with several of these ethical and philosophical quandaries that serve not only as dramatic interplay between the three main characters, but, also metaphorically as the basis for several of the arguments politicians and intellectuals are having these days concerning the role that America and the West have taken in Iraq, the Middle East and beyond.

“Watching David Hare’s The Vertical Hour is an eye-opening experience — Richly stimulating stuff.” Michael Billington, The Guardian

Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire
Directed by Sara Falconer
November 6 – 22, 2009

Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize. Becca and Howie Corbett have everything a family could want, until a life-shattering accident turns their world upside down and leaves the couple drifting perilously apart. Rabbit Hole charts their bittersweet search for comfort in the darkest of places and for a path that will lead them back into the light of day.

“A transcendent and deeply affecting new play.” — Entertainment Weekly

Flaming Guns of the Purple Sage by Jane Martin*

Directed by Susan Arnold

January 15–31,2010

Big 8, a feisty rodeo competitor, is a bitter critter facing foreclosure on the Wyoming ranch where she rehabilitates injured rodeo cowboys. The arrival of a shocking woman named Shedevil and a one eyed Ukranian biker named Black Dog ushers in outrageous violence and horror in this shoot ‘em up, knock ‘em up, cut ‘em up comic romp that roasts the cowboy mentality of western writers like Zane Grey. Showcasing the antic side of this prolific, award winning playwright, this bodacious and macabre cross over comedy mixes horror and hilarity as it pits the code of the West against contemporary darkness.

"The funniest and the wildest.... Adds still another dimension to this author's body of work.... The laugh lines are non stop."

CenterStage

Fool for Love by Sam Shepard

Directed by Mike Sultzbach

February 26 –March 14, 2010

Winner of the Obie Award. For 15 years, Eddie, an aging rodeo rider in today’s American West, and May, a waitress, have had an obsessive, dysfunctional, on-again, off-again love affair. One moment, the pair are drawn together by their insatiable passion for each other; the next, we witness the piercing words firing from their tongues that give ballast to the weight of a nation's buried dreams, like Old West gunslingers in a fight to the finish. Beneath it all, we discover a bond that lies deeper than the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

"It is as mysterious and unsettling—now you see it, now you don't—as spare and, incidentally, as funny as anything he has ever done."

The New Yorker

Last of the Boys by Steven Dietz
Directed by Susan Arnold
April 9-25, 2010

Ben and Jeeter fought in Vietnam, and for thirty years, they have remained united by a war that divided the nation. Joined by Jeeter's new girlfriend and her off-the-grid whiskey-drinking mother, these friends gather at Ben's remote trailer for one final hurrah. As the night deepens, the past makes a return appearance, and its many ghosts come flickering to life. This is a fierce, funny, haunted play about a friendship that ends and a war that does not.

"... shattering, and its careful revelations and haunting imagery stick with you long after you leave the theater."

Windy City Times

*Pending final approvals

Announcing LTW's 2009-2010 Mainstage Season!

  Live Theatre Workshop proudly presents
 its 2009-2010 Season

October 3-November 8, 2009 The Unexpected Guest
by Agatha Christie
In dense fog near the South Welsh coastline, a stranger runs his car into a ditch and arrives at a nearby house. Inside, he finds the murdered body of a former big-game hunter. The dead man's wife is near the body with a gun in her hand. Is she guilty or is she protecting someone? Appearances are sure to deceive in this twisty mystery!!

November 14, 2009-January 4, 2010 A Tuna Christmas
by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and Ed Howard
In this hilarious sequel to Greater Tuna, it's Christmas in the third smallest town in Texas. Many colorful Tuna denizens, some you will recognize from Greater Tuna and some appearing here for the first time, join in the holiday fun. A Tuna Christmas is a total delight, performed by two quick changing comedians. "A hoot!"-NY Times
"So funny it could make a racoon laugh affectionately at Davy Crockett.... It's far too good for just Christmas."-NY Post "The hilarity ... never lets up."-Village Voice

January 9-February 14, 2010 ThClean House by Sarah Ruhle
Runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize in 2005. The play takes place in Connecticut, where married doctors employ a Brazilian housekeeper who is more interested in coming up with the perfect joke than cleaning. Trouble erupts when the husband falls in love with one of his patients. This theatrical and wildly funny look at class, comedy and the nature of love gives new meaning to the phrase, "I almost died laughing".
"Fresh, funny ... a memorable play, imbued with a comforting philosophy: that the messes and disappointments of life are as much a part of its beauty as romantic love and chocolate ice cream, and a perfect punch line can be as sublime as the most wrenchingly lovely aria." — NY Times. "Casts a spell that had me hooked." — NY Daily News.

February 20-March 28, 2010 Wife Begins at Forty
by Arne Sultan, Earl Barret and Ray Cooney

A wildly zany and hilarious romp from Ray Cooney -- the author of "Funny Money", "Caught in the Net" and "Run for Your Wife!" It's a laugh a minute when an almost-40 housewife fans the flames of passion with her mild mannered ordinary husband. Clever, crazy and tons of fun -- a fine example of what has made Ray Cooney one of the most successful and widely produced playwrights in the world.

April 3-May 2, 2010 Picnic
by William Inge
In this classic winning love story, what starts as neighborhood picnic to celebrate the end of another run-of-the-mill Summer turns into a life-changing twenty-four hours for a group of women in a small, mid-western town. Picnic won William Inge the Pulitzer Prize, The Drama Critic Circle Award, The Outer Circle Award, and The Theatre Club Award.

May 8-June 13, 2010 What the Butler Saw
by Joe Orton
A madcap romp of mistaken identity, gender confusion, and naughty intrigue. Forbidden trysts, a web of lies, and a government inquisition highlight this classic farce.
"Hilarious, outrageous... It dazzles!... Wonderfully verbal, toying with words as if they were firecrackers." N.Y. Times. "Brilliant, witty, the funniest show so far this season." NBC TV. "Madly antic humor." AP . "Hilarious.... Joe Orton's best comedy." CBS.

KING HENRY V MARCHES INTO ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY

ATC presents limited engagement of Guthrie Theater/The Acting Company production

Arizona Theatre Company is proud to present The Acting Company/Guthrie Theater production of William Shakespeare’s KING HENRY V.  Considered by many to Shakespeare’s greatest and most exciting history play, it tells the story of one of England’s most inspiring monarchs and his triumphs in war, politics and love.  A touring co-production of two of America’s Tony Award-winning theatre companies, KING HENRY V plays in Phoenix at the Herberger Theater Center for five performances only from March 26 though March 29. KING HENRY V continues its run in Tucson at the Temple of Music and Art for an additional five performances from April 2 through April 5. Arizona Theatre Company’s Season Underwriters are I. Michael and Beth Kasser and the production sponsor of KING HENRY V is Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Young, restless and ambitious, Henry V inherits a troubled crown and seeks to secure his position at home by launching a hasty invasion of France.  The charismatic warrior King’s aggressive pursuit of the French crown earns him iconic status, uniting England and France and briefly banishing the civil strife that will long outlive him. This Shakespearean epic expertly balances the thrilling heroics of battle with the painful and complex reactions of men who are sometimes unsure of the justice of their cause.  KING HENRY V is a rousing, fascinating story about the power of courage and the price of glory.

KING HENRY V is directed by Davis McCallum, whose previous productions with The Acting Company include  Jane Eyre, The Tempest and The Turn of the Screw. His New York credits include Chuck Mee’s Queens Boulevard (Signature Theatre) and Quiara Hudes’ Elliot: A Soldier’s Fugue (P73 at the Culture Project, 2007 Pulitzer Finalist). Georgia Cohen (Chorus/Ensemble) has performed at Guthrie Theater (A Guthrie Experience), Trinity Repertory Company, Long Wharf Theatre and The Gamm Theatre.  Kelley Curran (Chorus/Ensemble) is performing in her third season with The Acting Company, both Off-Broadway and on tour, where she’s appeared in Moby Dick Rehearsed, The Tempest and Jane Eyre. Casting Call

Oro Valley|Marana magazine (http://ovmmagazine.com/) is looking for students in the Tucson area to model for our magazine. We do lots of family-centered shoots and like to use “real” Tucson kids of all ages!

Our sets are open, our shoots last just a few hours, and are organized and coordinated by professionals who work directly for the magazine. We provide clothing for the shoot, hair and make up services. We do request that a parent attend each shoot with their child.

The first shoot your child is cast for will not be paid, but if you are invited back, your child will be paid $25/hour and be given a copy of the publication when it comes out. We can also recommend them to local talent agencies that cast children for as much as $125 an hour!

To submit your child for casting, please email your child’s first name, school photo, age and clothing sizes to eburt@tucson.com. If we think your child would be a good candidate, we’ll invite you to the studio for a casting photo shoot.

If you have any questions, please email eburt@tucson.com.

Live Theatre Workshop presents

Lost In Yonkers

By Neil Simon
Directed by Sabian Trout

"The best play Simon ever wrote" - N.Y. Post

This Pulitzer-Prize winner by America's great comic playwright, set in 1942, begins as two young sons (Ian Mortensen and Luke Hawley) are deposited on the doorstep of their stern, tough grandma (Roberta Streicher). Their father (Eric Anson) is deeply in debt and needs to go on an extended sales trip. And so the boys find themselves in a new world with a family they hardly know - their overly rigid grandmother, their uncle Louie (Keith Wick) who may have mob connections, their capricious aunt Bella (Holli Henderson) and her secret romance, and aunt Gert (Kristi Loera) with an unusual speech impediment.

Laughter and heartwarming moments sing through this award-winning play. It's a night of entertainment for the entire family!

The show opens on Saturday, January 31, 2009 and runs through Sunday, March 8, 2009.
