University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film & Television presents HEAD OVER HEELS

A hilarious, exuberant celebration of love

TUCSON, Ariz. - The School of Theatre, Film & Television (TFTV) is proud to present the bold new musical comedy Head Over Heels, onstage at the Tornabene Theatre at the University of Arizona from April 9th through 23rd. The fifth production in TFTV's 2022/23 theatre season, Head Over Heels is a hilarious, exuberant celebration of love and exploration of identity from the visionaries that rocked Broadway with Hedwig and the Angry InchAvenue Q and Spring Awakening. The show follows the escapades of a royal family on an outrageous journey to save their beloved kingdom from extinction, only to discover the key to their realm's survival lies within each of their own hearts.

Head Over Heels weaves together a plot based on Sir Philip Sidney's sixteenth-century romance The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia with songs by the 1980s all-woman rock band The Go-Go's ("We Got the Beat," "Our Lips Are Sealed"). It will be directed on our stage by TFTV Assoc. Professor Danny Gurwin.

"The action is set in the 16th century, offering many standard Renaissance features that we've turned on their heads," says Gurwin. "There's romance, parental oppression, death and resurrection, but the plot is emboldened by an acceptance of gender fluidity. It is a powerful message for our current day seen through the lens of an equally complex and political world of long ago."

Danny Bass (BFA Musical Theatre, '24) plays a lead character, the gender fluid Musidorus: "Head Over Heels is colorful, loud, and joyful, and unlike any show I've had the opportunity to be a part of. The cast and creative team have worked day in and day out to portray how freeing and fulfilling it is to explore your identity untethered to the expectations of society. I've learned so much about myself during this show, and I am confident that those watching will learn something about themselves as well."

Alongside Bass, the cast includes Ashling Shockey (Mopsa), AJ Taylor (Pamela), Sophia Scarsi (Philoclea), Erin Rose McDaniel (Gynecia), John Henry Stamper (Basilius), Alex Simpson (Dametas), and Brach Drew (Pythio). They are joined by ensemble members James CarrollGrace GebaraCatherine KimJohn HendersonHannah HuffordHolden JonesLillie LangstonGemma PedersenSydney Townsend, and Brennan Wood alongside pit singers Meghan GrayLily GrubertEliza Hitch, and Haiden Pederson.

Head Over Heels was conceived and the original book written by Jeff Whitty then adapted by James Magruder. This production will have ten performances between Apr. 9 - 23, 2023, including a special post-show discussion with cast and crew on Friday, April 21. Ticket discounts are available. This production qualifies for our newly announced free student ticket program.

Winding Road Theater Ensemble AUDITIONS FOR 2023-2024 SEASON!

From: Winding Road Theater Ensemble <windingroadte@gmail.com>
Sent: Wednesday, March 29, 2023 6:00 AM
Subject: AUDITIONS FOR 2023-2024 SEASON!

Announcing Auditions for Winding Road Theater's 15th season!

Winding Road Theater Ensemble will be holding 2023-2024 season auditions Saturday April 22nd from 2pm-4pm at Eckstrom-Columbus Library located at 4350 E. 22nd St. in Tucson.

At Winding Road we practice inclusive casting. Directors are looking for 10+ actors of all ages, genders, and ethnicities. We will be casting for two shows:

String of Pearls by Michele Lowe. On the eve of her granddaughter Amy's wedding, Beth asks to see the pearls she gave Amy's mother long ago. When Amy cannot produce them, Beth determines to find the pearls. Spanning 35 years, the pearls touch the lives of mothers and daughters, sisters and friends, even husbands and wives as they weave a deeply affecting story of love and loss. While the pearls are stolen, bought, bestowed, unstrung and nearly lost, four actresses play 27 characters in this deeply moving drama that is as fresh as it is funny. Dates are not yet determined for this play. We are trying for a November/December 2023 run. Roles in String of Pearls are open to any actor comfortable playing women.

Amadeus by Peter Shaffer. In the court of the Austrian Emperor Joseph II, Antonio Salieri is the established composer. Enter the greatest musical genius of all time: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Salieri has given himself to God so that he might realize his sole ambition, to be a great composer. Mozart is a foul-mouthed, graceless oaf who has that which is beyond Salieri's envious grasp: Genius. Amadeus premiered at the National Theatre in London in 1979, before transferring to Broadway, where it won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1981. The film version, screenplay also by Peter Shaffer, won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1985. This play will run in February 2024Amadeus will be cast gender blind. The role of Salieri is not available.

Auditioners should prepare two short (30 second to 1 minute) contrasting contemporary monologues. Monologues should be no more than 2 minutes in total length.

Please bring a current headshot and resume. You may also submit headshots and resumes to our email address: windingroadte@gmail.com
