"SHADOW DANCER" A SMART THRILLER

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Regardless of your personal feelings about the angry Irish Republican Army and how remote their disputes might seem from the endless downtown Tucson street destruction and trolley car troubles, there is value in seeing “Shadow Dancer” at the Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd.

While there are some suspenseful plot similarities to the elegant “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” James Marsh, the director, and Tom Bradby, who adapted the script from his own book, have chosen to make “Shadow Dancer” more about the psychological damage wreaked on all participants during such internecine conflicts.

No one’s moral compass points continuously true north. Through the plot’s convoluted twists and turns of compromise, all the black villains and white heroes become as gray as Ireland’s own murky skies.

Perhaps this is the film’s most important message: in all conflicts between governments both established and irregular, survival depends on every family pulling together on its own. To let a family become divided against itself not only guarantees defeat but also destruction.

The plot setup belies its complexity. In Belfast in 1973. young Collette McVeigh (Maria Laird) sees her younger brother die in cold blood. In 1993, Collette (now played by Andrea Riseborough) joins her surviving siblings Connor (Domhnall Gleeson) and Gerry (Aiden Gillen) in their retaliatory actions on behalf of the IRA.

Alas, in London Collette fails to detonate a bomb and is caught by MI5’s Mac (Clive Owen). More unfortunately, Mac knows about Collette’s dead brother and her own son.

Playing these cards, Mac promises MI5 protection for Collette and her son if Collette promises to turn coat and help bring down her family members in the IRA. If she won’t, Collette goes off to prison for 25 years.

What’s a poor girl to do? Faced with having to choose between her brothers and her son, she goes undercover with hopes of navigating between Mac’s responsibilities to enforce the peace and the IRA’s attacks in the name of justice.

As a theatrical performance, Riseborough poignantly portrays all the conflicting emotions of her impossible situation. As a thriller, “Shadow Dancer” keeps its thrills to the mental sort.

For those addicted to all the quick-take special digital effects of Batman/Spider-Man/Superman, “Shadow Dancer” could seem slower that Sherlock Holmes’ ruminations on an unexpected wrinkle in the clothing of a criminal suspect.

Come prepared to appreciate nuance and subtlety even as the threat of gunfire and explosions always hang in the air, and be rewarded with the piquance of an intelligent adventure inevitably bittersweet.

GRISLY HUMOR FILLS "100 BLOODY ACRES"

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Granted, campy Australian movies are an acquired taste. But for those who have acquired this particular fondness, “100 Bloody Acres” will truly be a guilty pleasure with an accent – one at times so garbled that subtitles would be appreciated.

As the title implies, the setting for this gruesome bit of butchery is a rural stretch of countryside out in the bush. There are also plenty of trees and a nice bit of two-lane blacktop, useful for chasing down victims determined to escape their fate at the hands of brothers Reg (Damon Herriman) and Lindsay Morgan (Angus Sampson).

The brothers have one ingenious idea – converting road kill (for which the two-lane blacktop is also useful) into what they call Organic Blood and Bone Fertilizer.

Apparently, among Australians obsessed with growing their own healthy food, organic blood and bone fertilizer is the only way to go. Something about getting a huge boost of phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen, or something.

The unfortunate part is that most road kill is rather smallish, maybe the occasional kangaroo is pretty good but all the rest is just rabbits and such. So one early morning when Reg in his company truck discovers a vehicle smashed into a tree and its driver dead, Reg is delighted.

He drags the dead man into the back of his truck and heads on home. Later on in a rather gruesome sequence, Lindsay will convert the body into their unique fertilizer’s most active ingredient.

However, in the meantime, good-natured Reg stops on his way back with the dead man hidden under some other and picks up three lively young people hitchhiking to a music festival. Of course you know what will happen next.

What is the next step below grave-digger’s humor? Whatever the name, that is the kingdom of “100 Bloody Acres.” With a burst of good-hearted élan we are assured there is little this bunch won’t do to get their laughs.

Their food processing plant is a rundown barn, their meat grinder couldn’t be more grossly disgusting, their motivations more grisly. Reg is the dim-witted one whose awkwardness covers a heart of gold. Lindsay is the true villain, a mountain of a sociopath who scrupulously wears hair and beard nets to grind up his victims.

It is little touches such as the hair nets included in writer/director brothers Cameron and Colin Cairnes creativity that make “100 Bloody Acres”  worthwhile.

There are no surprises in the plot. Knowing what to expect next actually makes the audience feel more involved. Much of the film feels crude, but that just feeds the conviction that their imagination will not only burst through the box but frolic in the meadow outside.

Just don’t plan on going out for burgers after the movie.

"DIRTY WARS" WILL MAKE YOU BURN

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Adding more fuel to the incendiary flame of disgust over the U.S. government’s respect for its own citizens is the documentary “Dirty Wars,” now playing at the Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd.

This candid inside-Afghanistan film will outrage conservatives as well as liberals who consider themselves true believers in the American way of life.

Career war correspondent Jeremy Scahill (presently on the staff of The Nation magazine), has written and directed this account of his own reporting on how the military wiped out an (apparently) innocent Afghan family misidentified as Taliban.

Doing the reporting on this unfortunate hit squad commanded by American officers, Scahill found out about the global (undeclared) wars being waged secretly by our military’s Joint Special Operations Command in a number of nations. All who ostensibly have peaceful relations with the United States.

Hiding behind a smokescreen of justification called The War on Terror, President Obama has approved the tactics of this JSOC to pursue and eliminate individuals deemed dangerous to the United States.

Scahill was there when the New Mexico-born Anwar al-Awlaki, a Muslim Yemeni-American imam, was assassinated in Yemen by a CIA-led drone strike. Was he a traitor? Should a proper trial determine that? Or was it just fine to shoot first and ask questions later?

The dangerous part – that part that makes “Dirty Wars” so important – is that we the people don’t get to decide the answers to those questions. The politicians presently in power are the ones making all the decisions now.

“Dirty Wars” the film is a companion piece to Scahill’s book “Dirty Wars: The World is a Battlefield” which should be on the reading list of everyone concerned about the future of our country.

Since independent investigations such as this have been abandoned for the most part by the country’s large newspapers and television networks, our informed citizenry must look to these lone wolf enterprises to bring us as much truth as we are going to get about what’s really going on behind that that smokescreen called the War on Terror.

Presents

(Dude) True Story: Three Tall Tales

By

Jimmy Dees

Beowulf Alley Theatre Company presents (Dude) True Story: Three Tall Tales by Jimmy Dees July 19th through August 4th, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:30pm, at Beowulf Alley Theatre, 11 S 6th Avenue in downtown Tucson. Tickets are $12, $10 for seniors, students, teachers and military personnel. New season subscribers are only $8. For more information contact Michael Fenlason at theatre@beowulfalley.org or 520.882.0555.

(Dude) True Story is a wild and raucous collection of one-acts by Oregon writer Jimmy Dees.

Tenure or Dust

Will losing a poet cost our hero his last shot at tenure? Roger Weaver and his trusted colleague, Mary Jane Loso, come to Casey's Bar in search of the missing Bulgarian. They’ve already been to the Buffet and the District. Where else would a poet be? Roger has never lost a poet before. Did a power nap and an extra hot nonfat Chai Latte cost him his last chance at a mortgage in the Sam Hughes area?

Hungry Hills Estates

Can two down-on-their-luck real estate salesmen catch a break? Or does a young girl's advisor make sure Grammie's money is well spent? Featuring the French actress Cynchie, this true tale explores the seamy side of real estate. Will love win out over greed? And what is it with lawyers?

U.R.O.K

The Tweed family gathers for a holiday meal. And they've brought friends. And baggage. Lots and lots and lots of baggage. Can this bickering family of self-help experts help themselves? Or will the meal go sour like bad wine. This tale explores the underbelly of wine-tasting, Buddhist monks, personalized license plates, and why Costco is constantly shifting their stuff from one aisle to another. Well, maybe not Costco; that question would take a whole play. Just about the same time it takes to find the dog food every month.

Casting Call, Terms and Conditions, a short comedy

From: Chris [mailto:ninebuddhas@gmail.com]
Sent: Wednesday, June 26, 2013 5:15 PM
Subject: Act This Weekend

We all check whatever box we need to check to get free wireless internet service agreeing to whatever terms and conditions are being imposed on a different computer screen to which none of us has ever turned.  I've done it.  You do it.  Everyone does it.

Terms and Conditions is a short comedy that reveals to what we are actually, but unknowingly, agreeing.   You are going to be surprised and probably somewhat ashamed (and hopefully at least a little amused).

Nine Buddhas Pictures is shooting Terms and Conditions -- a short comedy -- this week end -- Saturday with a 7 PM call time and again Sunday with a 7 PM call time.  Downtown Tucson -- both days.

We are looking for actors to fill one or two small speaking roles and we are looking for one or two extras for non-speaking parts.  You will only need to be present one of the two evenings.  Looking for both men and women -- 18 plus -- but otherwise open as to age -- and open as to any other demographics.

There is no monetary compensation, but everyone involved gets title credit, a digital copy of the film, and gets to participate in the greater glory of the sport.

Send a headshot and resume if you have them to ninebuddhas@gmail.com. Tell me a little about yourself if you don't.

Let me know if you want to act in a short film this week end.
