ACT ONE WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR OF ARTS EDUCATION

ACT ONE WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR OF ARTS EDUCATION

Art teacher and arts advocate joins Arizona's leading charitable organization dedicated to providing access to the arts

Act One announced that Dr. Beth Maloney will be joining as Director of Arts Education.

Dr. Beth Maloney is a National Board Certified teacher, the 2014 Arizona Teacher of the Year, and spent the past twenty years teaching in the classroom. Dr. Maloney has a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, a Master's degree in Leadership and Supervision, and a doctorate in Higher and Postsecondary Education. She was also awarded an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Northern Arizona University.

Additionally, Dr. Beth Maloney's experiences that will benefit Act One moving forward include:

  • Creating Virtual Reality field trips that will revolutionize arts-based field trips
  • Building teacher and school relationships with our arts partners to harness currently available digital opportunities for students and teachers.
  • Creating and mobilizing an arts education committee to become advocates for the Phoenix arts education community.

"I'm thrilled to be writing to you from my new position as Director of Arts Education for Act One. I came here because I believe in their mission with my entire heart: to provide meaningful arts experiences that enhance the academic and creative potential of children and families in Arizona. I am so excited to be involved with an organization that directly addresses the arts equity gap for vulnerable students. Traditionally, Act One provides arts-based field trips for more than 49,000 students from Title I schools in Phoenix and Tucson annually.  As COVID-19 changed the delivery model of school and arts organizations, Act One is changing, too." says Dr. Beth Maloney.

"Beth brings the much-needed educator perspective to Act One. With her experience and connections to the education community, Act One programs will benefit under her direction. The Board and I are delighted she has joined Act One!" says Bernadette Carroll, Executive Director.

About Act One: Act One was founded in 2011 in direct response to the lack of access to the arts in Arizona schools. Act One provides meaningful arts experiences that enhance the academic and creative potential of children and families in Arizona. The organization envisions a time when all Arizonans acknowledge the value of creative arts experiences as a significant component of educational advancement and personal well-being. Act One makes the arts accessible to more than 530,000 children and families in Arizona each year through field trips for K-12 students from Title 1 schools and the Culture Pass. For more information about Act One, it's programming and how to donate, please visit www.act1az.org or follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @act1az.

Unscrewed Theater October comedy calendar

From: Unscrewed Theater <UnscrewedTheater@gmail.com>
Sent: Monday, September 28, 2020 9:00 AM
Subject: 😜 October Unscrewed News from Chris 🎃

Just look at what we have planned for October.

Online Zoom Shows: All shows are MST, Tucson time. The cool part is you can watch from anywhere, in any way you want! Just register on our website, then set your alarm for showtime!

In addition to our FREE Family Friendly House Party every Saturday night at 7:30, we've added two FREE UNCENSORED shows at 9:30 every month. (Adults only, please!) On the 2nd Saturday of every month, we'll take off the filters and let her rip. In October, that's the 10th and the 24th.

Register online now.
Then put it on your calendar.
I'll wait.

And we've added another FREE new monthly show – our Sunday SmashUp – at 6:00 pm on the last Sunday of every month. That's 10/25 this month. Five teams perform all kinds of different improv – think Open Mic Night for improv. PLUS, a mixed-up improv jam at the end. We have NO idea what will happen!  And don't let the time slot fool you - adult language and content are possible. So consider yourself warned.

I know you're as bummed as we are about a quarantine Halloween, so plan to spend that night at home with us. We'll have a special Halloween show planned @ 7:30 – you'll just have to provide your own candy. And costumes. Next year, we'll do Halloween right again. We promise.

OH, and don't forget our online Student Showcases on 10/11 & 10/16 at 6pm. Once you see how much fun these folks are having, you'll be sure to sign up for our next round of classes starting October 17th. Because now you can take our online classes from ANYWHERE!

Funny on Facebook:
On the 19th-24th, we're starting our new Chain Reaction episodic improv – only on the Unscrewed Theater Facebook page. Watch this string of daily videos at noon, and then see them strung together on the final day, 10/24.  Trust me. You're gonna love it.

Online Zoom Classes – again, all times are MST, Tucson time. But you can join us from any time zone you want! Details on our website.

Improv Basics starts on 10/17. Our introductory class meets every Saturday from 1:00-4:00pm for 8 weeks - at the bargain price of $149. Our own Mike Pierce will show you how "yes, and" can change your life. You'll make new friends, have the funnest Saturday afternoons you've ever had, AND get a free t-shirt.  Can't really beat that, now can you?

Already taken Basics?  Move on to MUSICAL ImprovBlox, starting the same day. No, you don't have to have a great singing voice. Or any kind of musical training. For 8 weeks, our Cy Barlow will take those basic improv principles and weave in the magic of musical improv. Yes, you got this. If I can do it, anyone can!

Not big on commitment?  Try our Monday night Improv Drop-ins. From 6:30-8:00, veteran improviser (and AZ Renaissance Fair King) Jon Benda will lead the way to finding the BEST way to top off your Monday. No improv experience required, and admission is free, but we'd sure love a modest $10 donation. Just to let Jon know how much fun you had.

Online Zoom Workshops:  We're proud to host workshops from some of the most successful improv teachers in the country. We've got several lined up for October, and expect more in November!

Celeste Pechous has been kicking the comedy improv tires for the last two decades.  As an alumna of the National Touring Company with Second City, Pechous performed comedy all over the world.  She has trained and performed at the Second City, iO Chicago/LA, and The Annoyance. She taught two workshops in September, but there are a few open seats left in the two remaining ones on October 4th. Don't miss her magic!

Liz Allen brings a lifetime of improv experience to our Unscrewed Theater workshops. She has performed, coached, directed, and written about improv for over 28 years.  All the while, winning award after award and teaching hundreds of workshops. She's teaching four workshops, and they are well worth the $45 each. Jump on this while you can!

Now that you see what we've got up our proverbial virtual sleeves, maybe you can forgive my rotten communication skills. (And you can convince my wife to feel the same way.) So much online funny this month!

As always, I am grateful for you, person on our email list. And I'm interested in anything you've got to suggest or say about our shows, classes, and workshops. Or anything else, for that matter.

Just shoot me an email at Chris.Seidman@gmail.com or give me a call at 520-975-7035 – and I'd be happy to tell you all the ways that watching and doing improv can change your life forever.

'til next month . . . hang in there. And laugh with us. We're still in this together!

Thanks and Take Care,

Chris Seidman
Executive Director,
Unscrewed Theater

Unscrewed is Tucson's ONLY 100% volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit community theater dedicated to the fun and healing laughter found in improv comedy.

Our theater is put together, and held together, by volunteers.

100% of the time.

And every last one of us is dedicated to creating a safe place for you to laugh & enjoy yourself. Whether you're in Tucson or Timbuktu.

And that's more important than ever right now, right? So we've become the kings and queens of online merriment.
👑

Whether you're watching one of our free shows, sittin' in on a class or workshop, or watching all that free funny we've got loaded up on YouTube - we want you to be able to forget, even if for just a couple minutes, about everything that makes you feel anything less than COMPLETELY happy.

And while we never get paid, our landlord, insurance and utility companies do. Every month.

Today, I'm asking you to invest in the future of funny.

Only as much as you comfortably can. Even five dollars a month makes a difference. That's less than what it would cost to come see one show a month in person.

So come on.
Do it.

Count yourself among those who know the value in watching a bunch of really silly people make stuff up in front of everyone.

Cuz, really.
It's awesome.

Just smoosh this button.

Our Unscrewed Instructors

Cy is a musician with an IT day job. She's a perpetual student of music, theater, and improv and relishes every opportunity to entertain people.

Along with being the musical director for From The Top, she performs with Unscrewed Theater's Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed and From The Top and Tucson's nerdiest steel drum band, Apocalypso.

Cy is probably not your uncle.

Mike has been studying, performing and teaching improv for over 15 years. He is one of the founding members of Unscrewed Theater and performs weekly with the Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed: Tucson's premier improv troop.

Tucson Improv Movement Upcoming Shows and Classes

From: Tucson Improv Movement <justin@tucsonimprov.com>
Sent: Thursday, September 24, 2020 7:29 AM
Subject: The Yes And News 9/24/20

Do you ever go to work and feel like you are in an episode of The Office?  Do you wish your boss was Michael Scott, are you happy your boss isn't Michael Scott? Do you dream of a cute Jim and Pam romance?  Do you own a beet farm? Do you...okay I'll stop you get the point.  Excuse all of my Office references in this long winded introduction to our second BRAND NEW team, The Meeting!  We are taking all the tropes of situational work place comedies and brining them to our Digital Edition shows.  What would happen if your co-workers were forced to conduct a meeting over Zoom? Well now you can find out on our Facebook page, by watching The Meeting! This hilarious cast features: Emily Areinoff, Drake Belt, Joel Chorny, Alex Danvers, Sue Jones, Gerry Morgan, Amy Selegue, and Kallie Siderwicz.  Catch the pilot episode on October 9th!

I want to give a big shout out to Rafi Herreras-Zinman who was a panelist on the Queen City Comedy Inclusion in Improv Facebook Live Discussion this past weekend.  Rafi was a great representative of improv, and a vital part of the discussion.  I encourage everyone to check it out, as it featured improvisers from around the world. Over the past couple months and after watching the discussion my brain was buzzing with all of the ways we can improve what we do and how we do it in regards to creating better space at our theater for everyone.

Tonight the Fourth Avenue Merchants Association are partnering with the Pima County Health Department to offer FREE COVID-19 testing on 4th Avenue.  Thursday, Sept 24 from 7pm-10pm testing will be held at 522 N. 4th Ave. in the parking lot between Sky & Sand and Lindy's.  While pre registration is strongly encouraged, you can register on the spot. As we continue to work to get back to doing live comedy, testing and getting our Pima County numbers down is an important part of that process.  We encourage everyone to go and get tested to make our community safer!
