SAPAC presents "Gutenberg! The Musical!"

From: Dennis Tamblyn <dennis@sapactucson.org>
Sent: Tuesday, July 30, 2019 2:36 PM
Subject: Press Release for "Gutenberg! The Musical!"

Back by popular demand after being nominated for a MAC Award in 2018, this production of the hit two-man musical spoof is a special event in Southern Arizona Performing Arts Company's inaugural season of musical productions. Two desperate (and bravely untalented) songwriters perform a backers' audition for their new musical about Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud Davenport and Doug Simon (portrayed by real-life brothers Carson and Tyler Wright) sing all the songs and play all the parts in their hilarious historical epic. There is even an interpretive dance with sewer rats!  Called "A smashing success" by the New York Times, Gutenberg! The Musical! went on to receive Lucille Lortel Award and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations for Outstanding Musical.

Gutenberg! The Musical! is brought to you by SAPAC and Not Those Wright Brothers and will perform a limited run at Unscrewed Theater, 4500 E Speedway Blvd, August 15-25, with shows on Thursday evenings and matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $25 each with discounts for students, teachers, and military. See www.sapactucson.org for tickets and more details.

Tucson Improv Movement Improv 101 class and shows...

Subject: Yes And News - 7/25/19

Improv 101 Starts Monday, July 29th at 6 pm!

Justin's Corner

I don't often have time in my schedule to teach Improv 101, but when I do, its the best thing that I get to do at the theater.  Taking people through the first steps of their improv journey is truly an honor. Improv has completely changed my life! When I first hopped into an Improv 101 class a little over ten years ago, I couldn't have said that today I would be here with a theater in Tucson, but everyday since that first class has been a journey to this moment and experience.  It truly has been meant to be!

People tell me decently regularly that improv has changed their life, that it started a journey into something that made them a better human being. Those heartfelt moments are honestly really fun for me, and the other person generally says it sheepishly and in a way where they feel weirded out to say the words aloud.  But it is honestly the most rewarding part of running this place!

I think everyone should take an improv class, it would make the world a better place.  The skills of listening, agreement, and actually taking the time to understand where someone else is coming from seems to be a lost art in todays world.  The idea that we can accept another human being for all that they are and make a true relationship seems a bit novel now.  So if you never took a class I would love to see you Monday night, lets start the journey, and who knows where it will lead you!

A Monsoon of Comedy is Waiting For You at TIM!

Justin's Corner

One of the things I am most proud about with TIM is the creativity our members display when they develop new show concepts and Indie teams.  When I first started TIM my whole goal was to give the community a well rounded grounding in the art of improv, and then spur that creativity with a stage to put up shows and try new things.  We've had some really successful examples of this with Pilot Season, which originally started out as a group of people putting together an improvised television show under the direction of the super talented Brooke Hartnett, and has now become one of our most popular shows.  Right now, Laugh Tracks is growing into that next break out hit, Rafi Herreras-Zinman came to us with an idea and its been running monthly for over a year.  Some of our more advanced company members are working on a more complicated format the deconstruction, something totally different than we traditionally do, and I can't wait to see what that grows into.

While a full team is doing that is cool, I think my favorite part of TIM is our duo and trio shows!  These smaller groups push people in new directions, and you can watch people grow as improvisers while doing it.  This weekend is a great time to catch some of these teams, on Saturday at 9 pm when Rough Around the Curves and Well Read Take the stage.  Rough around the Curves is last year.s 3V3 Champion, and their talent is incredible, so didn't miss out on an opportunity to see them

Like Disneyland, TIM is always growing and changing.  Oh wait, even better than Disneyland, it won't cost you a ton of money to go through our doors.  So I hope to see you this weekend, celebrating TIM's creativity!
