"MARY'S WEDDING" GIVES YOUR HEART A LONG, LOVING HUG

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Tim Fuller photo

Mary (Maggie Josephine McNeil) and Charlie (Stephen J. Dunham ) share a moment of tea and understanding.

It isn't the linear story so much as the poetic feeling that stays with you in “Mary's Wedding” by Canadian playwright Stephen Massicotte, now playing at the Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre in the Historic Y just off North Fourth Avenue.

The kind of poetic pulse that beats with the anticipation of romance, protesting reality and refusing restraint. Wrapped in language so sensual it can break your heart and set it on fire, all at the same time.

Looking fragile as a saint, barefoot in a full-length white cotton nightshirt, Maggie Josephine McNeil as Mary sets the play's pace through 90 minutes of the most compelling reminiscence an eager spirit could handle.

While her arched eyebrows and searching face can project myriad moods at an astonishing rate, McNeil also speaks with a fascinating hint of English accent as honest as the cup of tea she describes with complete enchantment.

Susan Arnold is the director. David Morden is credited as dialect coach and proves his worth in giving Mary's voice a sense of dedicated old world family values, even as her new world Canadian spirit is bursting to be free.

Her companion is Charlie (Stephen J. Dunham), the kind of no-frills, hard-working good guy who has a better understanding of horses than he has for people. It's in that way that Charlie connects with Mary, like an untamed force of nature, full of surprises.

At the same time Charlie is a bundle of contradictions – he is frontier-brave when needed, but also forgiving and generous, trusting her even when he doesn't understand why.

Filled to bursting with courage and adventure, he can also be reduced to tears of fright by the rolling peals of ominous thunder in every darkening storm that comes crashing around him.

The year is 1920. The first World War is over, but it isn't really over. It lives on in the minds of Charlie and Mary, just as real as their own daily lives, sometimes even more than real because their memories are so malleable.

Memories that are willing to appear like abstract art, twisted and pulled any way that feels right, any way that needs to be remembered.

In creating this sense of shifting wonder, Arnold as director becomes the artist painting a moving picture of changing personalities, deftly combining highlights and shadows until watching this play begins to feel like reading a poem, with every scene expressing many emotions all at once...swirling layers of real and remembered occasions.

So resist the compulsion to search for a straight-line narrative, to wonder “where are they now?”

“Mary's Wedding” is a love story that takes place just over100 years ago. It could have also taken place tomorrow. Anyone who has ever been in love or hopes to be in love, will understand.

Performances continue through Nov. 7 with shows at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays, in the Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre of the Historic Y, 738 N. Fifth Ave.

Tickets are $30 general admission, $28 seniors 65+, $15 for student and teacher; also for theater artists. The play is being suggested for ages 12+. To make reservations, phone 520-448-3300 or visit scoundrelandscamp.org

The actors will not be masked on stage. The theater's COVID protocol calls for audience members to wear masks and to show proof of their COVID status, either with a shot record or a negative test result within the last 72 hours. See the company's website for details.

ALONG WITH WISDOM, AGE BRINGS DETERMINATION

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Charissa Bertels takes energy to a whole new level in her solo performance to create "My 80-Year-Old Boyfriend" at Arizona Theatre Company.

The power of the mind to create its own magic comes bubbling up from the heart of Charissa Bertels' solo performance in the Arizona Theatre Company's production of “My 80-Year-Old Boyfriend,” with Sean Daniels directing.

Commanding the stage for 90 minutes playing 10 separate roles, Bertels creates several sorts of energy packing in layers of determination, happiness and despair to take us on her cherished arc of understanding as she learns the ropes breaking into New York theater and along the way becoming particularly fond of 80-year-old millionaire Milton, whose upper east side apartment has a breathtaking view of Manhattan.

But it isn't the story that Bertels tells us, so much as it is the way she tells it. An actor of enormous enthusiasm, she carefully crafts each role, shapes each character in a hundred different ways, although she is the only actor on stage, she makes each person distinctly different. Particularly the roles of herself and the elderly, rascally Milton.

Bertels' own story is the usual one of an unknown talent hoping to make it on Broadway, going to endless rounds of auditions, getting an occasional call-back and, finally, being picked for the Broadway and Madison Square Garden production of “A Christmas Story.”

That break led her to other roles, including the first national tour of “If/Then” as well as a teaching position at the New York Film Academy's Professional Conservatory of Musical Theatre.

It was during the time of endless auditions that Bertels kept her rent paid by being a sidewalk hawker selling bottles of a soft drink concoction she called “monkey juice.”

That's when she met Milton, who spotted her freelance merchandising efforts from his apartment building across the street. He came down to the pavement and offered to buy her entire daily supply of monkey juice if she would just talk to him for awhile.

Of course she said “No.” But we are in Manhattan and Milton is a persistent New Yorker (is there any other kind?). So after another song or two Bertels is singing about that skyline view from inside Milton's apartment. Why not, what can happen? After all, he is 80 years old.

The lesson we learn is that, hey, you never know what can happen. It might even be something good, if you just take a chance on life. So we are treated to one endearing moment after another as Milton's quarrelsome wisdom cuts through Bertels' resistance. Although he is scarcely a charmer, he does have that certain something she likes.

What we like, sitting in the audience is how easily Bertels creates this sense of wonder all by herself. Milton's voice is always a little deeper, a little hoarse, very New York. As Bertels' own confidence grows, taking audition after audition, it is easy enough to accept when she creates a duet sung by both Milton and herself.

The ATC audience, completely convinced, bursts out with instant applause.

“My 80-Year-Old Boyfriend” is a musical, after all, with 15 songs on the program. That duet, “Together With You,” is listed number seven. Playing the piano accompaniment from an elevated position at the back of the stage is formally attired Jose C. Simbulan.

The show is still being considered a work in progress. Sean Daniels, ATC's own artistic director, also directed its world premiere in 2017 in Lowell, Massachusetts. Daniels announced from the Tucson stage on opening night that an off-Broadway production is scheduled to open Nov. 29, 2022.

Getting credit for the book and lyrics is Christian Duhamel. The music and additional lyrics are by Ed Bell. Both are working from the solo concept conceived by Bertels.

“My 80-year-old Boyfriend” continues through Oct. 16, with performances Tuesdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., plus 2 p.m. matinees Saturdays-Sundays, in the downtown Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave.

Tickets are $40-$73. For further details, reservations and the latest COVID protocol, visit arizonatheatre.org or telephone 520-622-2823.

Subject: Announcing: OUTDOOR Theater!

Winding Road is pleased to announce our very first OUTDOOR production: Birds of North America

Birds of North America by Anna Ouyang Moench is the first Main Stage show of our 2021/2022 season. This thoughtful play depicts a strained father/daughter relationship played out over the course of ten years as they meet for their annual ritual of bird-watching. As they observe the birds of North America, the discussion ranges from owl anatomy to the responsibility of career choice to the threat of climate change. Birds of North America is directed by Artistic Director Maria Caprile and stars Erin Amsler and Ensemble Member Tony Caprile.

We are thrilled to present this play at a beautiful outdoor venue: Tucson's historic Valley of the Moon! Join us on the grassy lawn under the gorgeous Arizona sky! All showings of Birds of North America will be matinees.

But that's not all... bring your binoculars! All guests who arrive half an hour before the show can join our sponsor, Tucson Audubon Society, for a guided bird walk around the grounds! Tucson Audubon Society will be on hand for every showing, to answer your birding questions!

Birds of North America will play four performances only:

Saturday Nov 13 and 20th 2pm
Sunday Nov 14 and 21st 2pm

Valley of the Moon, celebrating their 98th year in Tucson, is located at 2544 E Allen Rd, near the intersection of Prince Rd and Tucson Blvd. There is plenty of FREE parking! Don't miss their family-friendly show, The Polka Dot Hex, playing through October 31st!

Pssst! It's not too late!

keepingabreast by Jackie Rosenfeld continues to play online through October 31st. We'd like to share this heartfelt review of keepingabreast by audience member Joyce Smith.

"Thank you for reminding us that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Such a perfect choice of production. Kudos to all involved, like also the unseen director's hand, for an exciting, terrific theater experience. So very deserving of a wide audience, here and everywhere. There ought to be productions of it for all oncology students specializing in breast cancer ~ and those already in the profession."

Get your keepingabreast tickets here!

Or buy a season pass for all five plays this season!

Season Passes to all shows this season are only $90 , a substantial savings over the at-the-door price! When you purchase your season passes through the link above, ShowTix4U will email you a code to use when you make your reservations to any show this season. It's that easy!
