Subject: The Yes And News 4/30/20

What up, its May, its 100 degrees, and there is a pandemic.  What could be better in this life.  I'll tell you what, TIM and our commitment to Digital Editions!  Last Friday night, the Soap Box took the Facebook Live stage, and you know what, its was so dang fun!  I know the cast had a great time, and the engagement in the virtual world was super positive.  As of the writing of this email the video was watched over 650 times and we had 58 comments and multiple shares.  You love us Tucson, you really love us!

Well if that is how you react to one little video, we are committed to making it happen again.  I was very much against online improv, this art form is something that I think needs to be viewed in an intimate, live setting.  But, I feel very good about how we worked the format and the technology, and I think if we have the right teams together it can be a pretty good thing.  Watch out Middleditch and Schwartz, we are coming for you!  So on Friday nights at 7pm, we are going to bring you a weekly TIM Comedy Theater Digital Edition Shows.  This week make sure you log in to watch Pilot Season create a Soap Opera right before your very eyes.  The following week, May 8th, the Soap Box will be back with another show.  We promise these digital editions will be under a half hour, and are looking to bring you our best stuff, so we hope you join us!

And if you said, hey that 30 minutes wasn't enough, make sure you go watch Middleditch and Schwartz on Netflix.  The first ever long form improv to be released as a special on a major streaming platform.  I think we are at a cross roads in the story of improv, and we need to support the thing we love, because this could open the door to future opportunities for improvisers.  Check out this article from Vulture where they talk about the future of improv, as if it were GOOD!

Last but not least, sign up for the Stand Up 101 Class (Digital Edition).  While the whole world is shifting, it is our strategy to take some of our amazing class content with our experienced instructors and put it into the online space. It is our way to keep Tucson laughing and learning while we manage the pandemic. The class starts on May 3rd and we are excited to see you in it!

Stand Up 101:  Intro to Stand Up Comedy (Digital Edition)

Learn the art of standup comedy utilizing the TIM philosophy to finding the funny fast. Discover how to nurture true stories into a routine that both engages and entertains your audience. Our experienced instructors will teach you to construct a stage persona, performance mechanics, develop a joke, and create sets this will hit with an audience.

This will be a Digital Correspondence version of the class. Students will get one content module per week including a writing exercise to complete. There will be a weekly class session 1-3pm where students will join a video conference call to chat with their instructor and classmates about the course material and run stand up sets.

LET THE FEAST BEGIN - Anello

LET THE FEAST BEGIN

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

To help get through the coronavirus crisis Bernice Chesi and I want to encourage you to dine out now and then in the comfort of your own social distance observing home.

Each weekend we are going to order out dinner from an iconic local restaurant, create as much of a restaurant atmosphere as possible at home, pretend we are dining out and report on the experience!

This week we ordered several gourmet dishes from Anello, a secret treasure of Tucson's pizza aficionados. This East Sixth Street place is so well known among the pie-eyed cognoscenti, it doesn't even need a sign. We were happy to find it anyway.

The address is 222, just a few doors west of the Crooked Tooth Brewing Company. Place your order online and it will be all boxed up waiting for you at the door.

The online address is anello.space. Facebook also has a busy page for Anello, with a number of encouraging recommendations from customers. It opened in 2017 without a sign and, since then, word of mouth has done all the work.

Andi Berlin of the Arizona Daily Star was there on Oct. 12, 2017, to tell the story of the tiny restaurant's proud link to the Phoenix pizza guru Chris Bianco.

All of which is a long and reassuring introduction to a truly unique Tucson favorite that deserves  to survive the coronavirus crisis. Not only does Anello take pride in its "properly fermented natural sourdough pizza," and its wood-fired oven from Naples, Italy, but also wants to put locally rased vegetables "whether pickle, grilled or raw" more directly into the dinner table spotlight.

"We need to get back to what makes a great food and make it available to everyone" reads the promise on the website.

The takeout menu is limited to a few different pizzas, a couple of salads, some seasonal veggies,  gelato and cake. Beer and wine selections are also available.

We selected  the three original pizza combinations that put Anello on the local gourmet map -- the Marinara ($12), the Margherita ($13) and the Bianca ($14). Representing those vegetables were two Market Salads ($7 each) and two helpings of Seasonal Veggies ($8 each). To drink, we chose a fine Chianti.

The music was, of course, the Frank Sinatra channel on Pandora. Although something from Verdi or Puccini would have been equally appropriate.

Those flavors on our plates were often exquisite, silencing in their simplicity. A meal to be enjoyed thoughtfully, savored. Pondered, even.

To get the full effect, if you must drive more than 10 minutes, it might be important to pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees before leaving home to pick up your order. These pizza crusts are thin, with crunchy edges. Let the toppings get a little bubbly in your own oven so all those rich flavors are chasing after each other.

Each piece is about the size of a large dinner plate, a one-person pizza for sure. The Marinara begins with a robust tomato sauce enhanced with garlic, oregano, basil and olive oil.

The Margherita adds slices of fresh mozzarella. The Bianca is built from fresh mozzarella and ricotta, with garlic, basil, olive oil and chiltepin peppers.

Eating each slice is kind of like two different experiences. The center is thin, a soft crust holding up all those blushingly fresh ingredients.

As you eat thoughtfully toward the thicker cruncher edge, the bread acquires more character, a heartier personality that ends with a satisfying snap.

Assuming the actual ingredients in the Market Salad and Seasonal Veggies changes from time to time, what is important to report is the freshness, that immediate pop of peak satisfaction.

Both dishes were full of various ingredients, hills and valleys of unexpected harmonies among the taste buds. Totally delightful, and this was just the meal's opening act.

Ordering pizza from Anello is definitely a candle-worthy opportunity. Just thinking about turning on the TV should get your knuckles smacked with a ruler.

Look, instead, for that special bottle of deep red you've been hiding in a corner of the wine cabinet. Give all five of your senses something to celebrate.

Chuck Graham and Bernice Chesi.

Subject: 😜 May Unscrewed News - from my sofa to yours 😜

Because we love you - our fans, friends, and family - we've decided to keep you (and us) safe by keeping the theater closed until the end of May. Let's just all continue to stay at home, as much as we possibly can.

BUT don't worry! We'll still bring you the funny EVERY WEEK. All you need is a phone, tablet or computer. And the internet.  Oh, and a little app called Zoom. Maybe you never heard of it a couple months ago, but even my 92-year-old father-in-law is using it now!

So fear not! We're off to a running start!

Beginning next Monday, the 27th we've got an exciting week-long Quarantine Countdown Improv Championship coming your way.

Eight teams will battle it out for bragging rights, a roll of toilet paper and first dibs on the expired candy once we get back to the theater.

Each day, two improv duos will enter the Zoom Battle Arena and are given a random suggestion. Immediately, they'll create a three-minute scene.

And the best part? YOU get to pick the winner. We'll post the video on our Unscrewed Theater Facebook Page at 5pm, and you've got until 10pm that same night to vote for your favorite team.

AND EVERY TIME YOU VOTE, you're entered to win FREE PASSES to Unscrewed Theater once we re-open and it's safe to get together in-person.

And that's just the start!

Every Saturday night @ 7:30 pm, we'll continue our family friendly FREE Unscrewed House Party shows live via Zoom. All you have to do is register online – and you'll find the link on our Facebook Page.

Wanna try online improv for yourself? Every Monday night @ 6:30, our Drop-In Improv Class is on Zoom, too! No experience necessary – just fun and games with the friendly faces of folks from all over the place.

Already have improv experience and wanna take an online workshop from some Improv pros? We've got that in the works, too. You'll have the dates and times just as soon as we do.

Now, you probably know that we're 100% volunteer run, but we still have bills to pay even tho the theater is closed. And all our online shows and Monday night classes are FREE.

If you are one of the lucky ones who has a few coins to spare, we sure would appreciate your donation to help keep us afloat. It's easy to do online, and every dollar helps.  Thanks, in advance, for your support.

Maybe you'd like to support us and have a chance to win some amazing prizes. We're selling Jim Click Millions for Tucson raffle tickets!

OH, and keep your eye out for some NEW limited-edition 2020 t-shirts – available soon. VERY soon.

To find out when they go on sale, and to make sure you're in the know with all that's going on at Unscrewed Theater keep checking back to our Facebook Page or our website www.unscrewedtheater.org. I'll continue my Monday and Thursday Facebook videos to keep you in know with what we know.

Until we can see your faces live and in person live at Unscrewed Theater, we wish you all health and happiness in our new reality. Stay at home and wash your hands!!

Stay Strong, Stay Home, Stay Safe.
