"A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people"

- Anne Leibovitz

Actor and photographer Gretchen Wirges' world premiere one woman show, THE PHOTOGRAPHER DISCLOSES, began as a break from posed, paid-for pictures to explore the power of capturing vulnerability and raw emotion on film. What Wirges found in each subject she photographed, using a series of thought-provoking and increasingly personal questions, was a level of vulnerability and trust between photographer and subject that exposed truth and connection like she had never experienced. Hear the stories and see the photos, as the photographer steps out from behind the camera to disclose some truths of her own.

How Documentary Films Can Change Lives

Mustang Moments is a documentary about the Wild Horse Inmate Program at the Arizona State Prison. Supervisor and Pastor Randy Helm and the Arizona State Prison created a program where wild mustangs are teamed up with inmates to gentle and train, resulting in a win-win for both the horse and the inmate. The inmates gain a positive work ethic, self-esteem, pride, patience and a trade that can be used upon release. The mustangs learn to trust and connect with humans. After training, mustangs are adopted to loving homes.

The recidivism rate for inmates that have participated in the wild horse program is less than 5%, far below the nationwide rate of 50%-80% within five years. World-renowned horse trainer Lanny Leach is developing an academy that creates an opportunity to learn new skills for a finished horse with a good foundation and techniques for growing a horse training business. The Mustangs of America Foundation is providing scholarships for parolees that wish to start their own business or work in the equine industry.

The primary objective of Mustang Moments is to encourage positive prison reform and create a body of work of photography and a documentary film featuring the inmates working with the horses and interviews of how their lives are changed.  We will document inmates being released and follow their new lives. We will also film several inmates that have already been released and show their success with their own horse businesses. We intend to make a feature length film to share the many inspiring stories of how the lives of these inmates and horses are changed forever.

So you're thinking of applying to the Tucson Fringe Festival...

From: Tucson Fringe Festival <tucsonfringe@gmail.com>
Sent: Friday, June 25, 2021 2:14 PM
Subject: So you're thinking of applying to the Tucson Fringe Festival...

Fringe Application FAQ

Wondering what exactly the Fringe Festival is? What you can and can't do? If Fringe is right for you? Let us help. Applications open July 1st and will stay open thru August.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A FRINGE SHOW?
If you can do it legally on a stage in the state of Arizona in 45-60 minutes, you can do it on the Fringe Festival stage. Fringe Festivals include storytelling, improvisation, dance, comedy, music, multi-media performance art, poetry, magic, burlesque, circus arts, as well as traditional theatre and anything else you can imagine.

DO I HAVE TO HAVE A COMPLETE SCRIPT AND CAST TO APPLY?
Nope. You need to have a pretty clear idea of what you want to do, and then if your application is chosen in the lottery (more about that in a second) you have until about October to work out the logistics, and until January to put it all together.

HOW DOES THE LOTTERY WORK AND WHY A LOTTERY?
By literally picking applications out of a hat we level the playing field? Is it your first time writing a show? Are you a seasoned touring performer? Workshopping a performance in progress? Unknown performer or Tucson favorite? Everyone has an equal chance of getting into the festival. We put every application into a hat and pick shows until our schedule is full.

WHY THE $20 APPLICATION FEE?
That helps us pay for our initial costs of securing venues and some marketing

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY SHOW IS PICKED?
You have a week or so to return the contract and pay your registration fee (more about that in a second), then about 5 weeks to get us your promotional materials (show description and photos), then about 2 months to put the show together however you want it. You'll know right away which venue you'll be performing in, and our technical director will help you figure out how to make your show work in that space. You'll get one tech rehearsal in the space the week of the festival.

WHY THE REGISTRATION FEE?
Performer registration fees cover paying our technicians, our social media director. They pay for marketing the festival, insurance, rental of equipment, printing, cleaning supplies, etc. In return you get 100% of the ticket sale money for your performances. Most performers in the Tucson Fringe Festival make their money back, plus a profit, and with our lower registration fees this year (almost $100 lower) it's easier than ever to turn a profit from your work in the Tucson Fringe Festival.

If you have any other questions before you apply, please feel free to email us at tucsonfringe@gmail.com or message us on Facebook or Instagram.
If this is your first time considering applying, the prospect can be scary, but getting your application chosen is a great way to give yourself the push that some of us need to take that risk and get your work out there!
