AT THE GASLIGHT THEATRE "CRONAN THE BARBARIAN" BRINGS A DIFFERENT KIND OF GLADIATOR TO THE POPCORN IN THIS ARENA

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Queen Vultura (Heather Stricker) drips with evil, plotting to defeat Cronan and all those who fight for freedom.

Meanwhile at the Gaslight Theatre, where Queen Vultura (Heather Stricker) wants to rule the world, tempers are boiling over a different sort of moment in history.

Eschewing any interest in real world politics, Gaslight's co-directors Mike Yarema and Kathryn Byrnes are taking us to mythical times reminiscent of the Roman Empire, albeit with dragons, centaurs and a pair of sword-swinging female heroes who intend to set the world right by thwarting the evil intentions of Vultura. Her dark superpowers are also enhanced by a magic mirror on the wall.

We are talking “Cronan the Barbarian,” a Gaslight tale originally written by Peter VanSlyke. Should you notice any similarities to that Hollywood gladiator with muscular excellence, “Conan the Barbarian,” those details are purely coincidental.

Towering Todd Thompson plays the freedom-loving Cronan, whose accent does bear a striking resemblance to early Arnold Schwarzenegger (“Hear me now and understand me later.” )

Vultura matches Cronan's perspiration of intensity drop for perspiration drop, adding peals of the most wicked laughter this side of “The Wizard of Oz.”

Vultura's slinky blackhearted dreams of lustful power will call for some heavy metal sword slinging, mendacious moments of confounding sorcery, sneering dragons with the most caustic breath, vaudeville jokes worthy of the Catskills and that mirror of reflective powers.

Nor is there a shortage of henchpersons on the relentless Queen's sinister side, led by General Ataxia (Jake Chapman) and joined by the aptly named Reptilius (Charlie Hall).

Adding spirit and virtue to Cronan's bold stand is the pure of heart Princess Persephone (Janee Page), getting a prestidigitous boost from the equally worthy Soothsayer (Taylor Thomas).

As for the traditional aftershow olio the Gaslight gang takes us to meet Dolly Parton and some of her friends. There is Kenny Rogers, of course, Tanya Tucker, Dolly's trio singing with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, followed at a distance by Homer and Jethro.

“Cronan the Barbarian” runs through March 30, with performances at various times, Tuesdays through Sundays in the Gaslight Theatre, 7010 E. Broadway. Tickets are $28 plus tax, with several discounts available. Check at the box office, phone 520-886-9428, or go online at www.thegaslighttheatre.com

CAN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE EVER REPLACE THE PRESENCE OF ONE'S OWN FAMILY MEMBERS? THE ROGUE THEATRE SAYS "YES"

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

From left, Marjorie (Cynthia Meier), Tess (Carley Elizabeth Preston), Walter (Ryan Parker Knox) and Jon (Matt Walley).

While Artificial Intelligence leads the list of buzz words dominating today's media, The Rogue Theatre dives straight into the deep end of the pool with “Marjorie Prime,” a demanding study on how much artificial reality it can take to hold an actual family together.

Set in the somewhat near future of 2065 or so, exhausted Marjorie (Cynthia Meier) at age 85 feels helpless to slow down the ease with which her mind is slipping away.

Spending her days tossed back and forth between frustrating surges of anger and fright, she finds little comfort in the “look-alike robot” that science has provided her – an animatronic version of her late husband Walter (Ryan Parker Knox) at about age 30, captured in the prime of his life.

Sounding and looking exactly like Walter, the figure has also been programmed to know many facts about the man's life. But while Walter can sound like he is “remembering” moments from his past, he recalls none of Walter's feelings. Science, alas, hasn't figured out how to give the machine any emotions.

On the other hand, Walter is never angry.

Providing the counterpoint in ire is Marjorie, who has no shortage of emotion based on the shrinking size of her memory. Anger is one thing she can always depend on...and she does.

But even when Marjorie is tempted to care about this high-tech version of Walter, she knows he isn't real. It also worries her that the fake Walter can remember more about her late husband's life than she can.

As a theatrical performance, the probing conversations between turbulent Marjorie and imitation Walter are brilliantly performed. Both find the true core of their characters. Within these struggles, truth takes a battering, too slippery to ever be held still for long.

Playwright Jordan Harrison has constructed “Marjorie Prime” so cleverly, and director Christopher Johnson puts so much attention to the most subtle details, we come away believing reality without a baseline can indeed exist in many shades of one's imagination.

Completing the cast are Carley Elizabeth Preston and Matt Walley as Marjorie's tense daughter Tess and her goodhearted husband Jon. Tess is equally as mercurial as her mom in abrupt mood shifts. Slipping into middle age herself, Tess faces her own dystopian dead end, forced to admit she never had a warm relationship with her mother.

Every conversation between Tess and Marjorie ends in a bickering, sputtering argument as resentment bubbles over. For both women, family life exists more in their heads than in their hearts. In one series of short bursts, Preston brilliantly leaps from crisis conclusion to crisis combustion.

We in the audience are left to ponder, does it really matter what happened in the past? Or does what we remember become more important than what actually did happen?

“Marjorie Prime” continues through March 16, with performances at various times Fridays-Sundays in The Rogue Theatre, 300 E. University Blvd. Run time is approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are $47. For details and reservations, visit www.theroguetheatre.com or phone 520-551-2053.

TEVYE IN NEW YORK picks up where the original stories left off. Follow Tevye as he fights for his piece of the American dreamin the crowded streets of Manhattan's lower East Side in 1914. Tevye's humor takes us through high tech advances like automobiles, electricity and the most curious contraption of all, the telephone! Tevye In New York! is a tale filled with laughter, heartbreak, and joy as Tevye the irrepressible dairyman tries to balance tradition with what it means to be an American Jew.

TRUTH by Marilyn Harris Kriegel

This is the final offering in The Invisible Theatre's Women's Voices play reading series, made possible in part through the generous support of Dr. Bella Eibensteiner, produced and directed by Fred Rodriguez and Susan Claassen

TRUTH, starring Maedell Dixon*, Susie Cookie Baker, Eric Anson, Joe L. Smith and Hannah Turner, is a fast-paced suspenseful drama. It takes place in Paris in the first decade of the 21st century when the United States, shocked by 9/11 struggles to protect itself from further attack. It is in this context that fiction writer and former activist Maggie Leeds arrives in Paris, jet lagged and disoriented, from a long flight, to visit to her son and his wife. It's entirely unclear from the shreds of her bizarre travel tale whether she is just a muddled, confused woman, a national security risk or something far darker. Andrew, her adult, expatriate son, blocks any attempts at opening the door to her confusion while his intrepid French wife, Martine, risks her marriage and her Mother-in-law's safety to discover "la verite", the truth.
