Spotlight Community Theater CASTING CALL - HOW I WOULD HAVE DONE IT!

CASTING CALL - HOW I WOULD HAVE DONE IT!

Spotlight Community Theater is looking for actors for How I Would Have Done It, a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud whodunit where every alibi is as ridiculous as the crime itself!

When the unbearable former child star Judas Bradford drops dead mid-show, Detectives Callahan and Sammy face a lineup of eccentric performers, each insisting they didn’t do it, but if they had, their version would have been much more dramatic.

Seeking performers ages 17+ for a variety of roles.

For more information or to get involved, call Chris at 520-484-3386 or visit spotlightcommunitytheater.com.

Description

Casting actors for a comedy pilot of 3 short episodes (10ish minutes each) for a new YouTube web series titled “DINER.”

This series takes a fun, ironic, often bawdy look back on the 1990s - a mix of nostalgia and WTF with the sweet agony of dial-up internet and new college relationships as well as the crazy sh*t they got away with in Hollywood.

This comedy is built on fast-paced banter across a mix of friends and coworkers who are all staff and regulars at an ordinary U.S. diner in the 1990s.

This is a passion project that we hope will extend past these three initial episodes. We’re a small team with a microbudget, we’re shooting on iPhones (if you haven’t yet seen Tangerine or Unsane, watch them – amazing!) and while we have limited film experience, we have deep experience in local, regional and touring theater as well as event production.

We intend to submit these episodes to festivals in 2025 and 2026. Actors will receive copies of these episodes and IMDb credits as well as an Uber stipend and food and drink on set.

Tucson-area talent only.

Shoot Details

Table reads, rehearsal and shooting will be in Tucson over the course of 3 or 4 partial days in late April 2025. Location pending, and exact dates and hours TBD once casting is set.

Auditions

· Please email a self-taped audition link to thedineronline@gmail.com

· When sending your audition link, please use the subject line: Diner - [your last name] - [the character(s) you’re auditioning for]

· Feel free to include a headshot/recent photo and info on acting experience. If you don’t have experience, don’t worry. Being inexperienced will not bar you from this project!

· Sides for any of the characters available on request but audition can be any other material you choose. We’d love to see your comedy chops!

Roles (5)

Amy - Early 20s – Diner Waitress.

Amy is from a protective, working-class, middle-America family, getting her undergrad degree but major undeclared. College has opened Amy’s eyes to issues of women’s rights and civil liberties and she gets very wound up about THINGS that are wrong in the world and PEOPLE who do the wrong thing when she thinks they should make better choices. Amy cares deeply about what’s fair and what’s right and perhaps she’ll end up getting her law degree, becoming a public defender and putting some of that outrage to good use.

Gina - Early 20s - Diner Waitress.

Gina is going to college for theater and wants to be an actress. Very pretty, loves acting, fashion, makeup, men. She can come off basic or shallow but there are surprising depths to her character. Gina can be impulsive, is often naive or misinformed but she’s not unintelligent. She always knows someone who knows someone who…

Matt - Diner Busboy

Matt is very smart, often smug/cocky, a burgeoning genius who probably will become a world-class gamer or Silicon Valley tech bro in today’s world. Matt can be geeky but doesn’t often fly his geek flag (I mean, it was the 90s and tech wasn’t cool yet). He enjoys hassling his coworkers but he’s not a bad guy, just a smartass who has some growing up to do. Hard-core crushed out on Gina.

Cindy - Early 20s - Diner Regular

Cindy is a nice, smart college girl who buys all her clothes at the United Colors of Benetton at the mall. Comes from a conservative family and shows those influences but is experimenting with her wild-child side. In one episode Cindy shares the story of a date that was fun and eye-opening and featured some unconventional sex, so this actor must be comfortable with talking graphically about sex. Cindy and Tina are neighbors with Leo.

Tina - Early 20s- Diner Regular

Tina is in college (when she goes to class), from an upper-middle-class family (who she low-key disdains). Loves pot, Nirvana and Lunchables. She’s been wearing flannels, ripped-up jeans and Doc Martens for years, modeling grunge fashion before it was popular. She thinks anarchy might be cool but it sounds exhausting. Closet intellectual and non-closeted bisexual. Cindy and Tina are neighbors with Leo.

Other Characters (Already Cast)

Tess: Late 50s/early 60s waitress at the diner. Struggling working-class, divorced single mom, conservative-leaning but has seen some things and done more than most.

Leo: Diner regular. A middle-aged gay man with a big personality. He’s fun and funny and a neighbor to Tina and Cindy in a little casita complex

The Outsider: a modern day woman inexplicably stuck in the diner. She lives like a ghost among the other characters: never seen, heard or noticed by the Diner inhabitants. She listens in on their conversations and ois the only character to break the 4th wall and address our audience directly.
