Borderlands Theater on the cutting edge of 21st century theater

We're shifting to an innovative model!

You may be wondering why we haven't announced our season. We have an even bigger announcement! For the past few years Borderlands Theater has interrogated notions of where and for whom professional theater is made, redefining the role of theater in the 21st century not only as a site of culture and reflection but as a powerful component in community development, heritage preservation, and communal healing. Our site specific productions in city parks (Sonoran Shadows), Tucson barrios (Barrio Stories) and historic sites like the Steinfeld Warehouse (Latin Standards) and La Pilita (Shooting Columbus) have been our most successful. In a groundbreaking push towards an equitable 21st century theater experience serving diverse and non-traditional audiences, Borderlands Theater is transitioning to a project-based company. We will no longer offer a five-play season, nor will we offer subscriptions. The majority of our productions will be presented in site- specific locations, where our target audiences live and work.

Maintaining the legacy and evolution of Borderlands Theater the staff and board of directors made this decision in order to focus on what we do best: making relevant, innovative, necessary theater that remains accessible to diverse audiences and reflects our border experience. We will produce one to two large productions a year along with a slew of smaller projects in partnership with a wide range of artistic and non-arts partners.

In the 2018-2019 season we are happy to announce two large-scale productions:

·     Sanctuary by Milta Ortiz - September 6 - 23

Presented site specifically at Southside Presbyterian Church. Based on the events and people that

ignited the 1980's Sanctuary Movement, which began in Tucson. Panel discussions following some

performances will be livestreamed through Howlround.com. Supported by NEA Art Works and

NALAC (National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures) grants.

·     Their Dogs Came with Them Adapted for the stage by Virginia Grise - Spring 2019

Concert version of the novel by Helena Viramontes commissioned by the National New Play Network.

Developed at Perryville Women's Prison with a Princess Grace Special Projects Grant. Live music

composed by Martha Gonzalez from the Grammy award winning Los Angeles band, Quetzal.

We are extremely excited about the following collaborative projects:

·     Spoken Futures and Borderlands Theater will partner for the fall semester to offer writing and performance workshops to queer and trans youth at Pueblo High School in South Tucson. The project culminates in a touring youth production. Sponsored by an $10,000 Network of Ensemble Theaters Continuation Grant, the project builds on a long standing partnership between Spoken Futures and Borderlands Theater most recently seen during Barrio Stories Project in Barrio Anita last April.

·     Borderlands Theater co-hosts the Network of Ensemble Theatres re: Routes National Conference taking place in Tucson in November.

·     Cleveland Public Theatre and Borderlands Theater, through a $10,000 National New Play Network Collaboration Grant, will collaborate on a devised theater project based on the theme of Water, of major importance to our two locations. Artist exchange and performance activities will occur in Tucson and Cleveland from December 2018 to January 2019.

·     The Food Bank of Southern Arizona and Borderlands, through an Arizona Humanities grant, will produce a series of videos about hunger and healthy food choices in Spring 2019.

·     Working with Southwest Folklife Alliance Voz Frontera project, Borderlands Theater is currently conducting preliminary research with the goal of producing a Barrio Stories Project in Nogales in Fall 2019.
