Playback Theater is a form of improvisational theater/ritual in which the audience is invited to shares stories from their lives and the troupe listens and “plays it back”. In this event, the audience can sit back and watch or join in and learn and play with the playback theater forms.

Festival Repertory Theatre will be performing Renee Taylor's hysterical comedy, BERMUDA AVENUE TRIANGLE, at the Cabaret theatre. the show will run for three week-ends beginning Feb. 15th and ending on Mar. 2nd.

Needed: A mature actor to play the Rabbi, who is also the recreations director for a senior condo community in Las Vegas. This is a very funny role. We would like an actor who can rehearse during the day, however, we will adjust schedules for the right person. Rehearsals start Mon. Nov. 12.

A stipend will be paid.

Also needed: a propsmaster - 2 assistants available

Due to many people attending AFM (American Film Market), the monthly IFASA meeting will NOT be this Monday.  It will instead be two weeks later (due to Veterans Day) on Monday, 19 November.

 

The meeting will be held at Access Tucson, 124 E. Broadway.

 

Our speaker this month will be Vicky Westover, Program Director of the UA's Hanson Film Institute (www.hansonfilm.org) who will inform us about her organization and what Hanson offers for the local film community.  The Hanson Film Institute was one of the sponsors of this year's Three-Minute Thriller contest.

 

The Jack and Vivian Hanson Arizona Film Institute (Hanson Film Institute) at The University of Arizona offers programs for students, emerging filmmakers, and media entrepreneurs who want to contribute significantly to the art and/or business of filmmaking and have an influential role in the film industry.  Serving diverse, underrepresented, and new voices, the Hanson Film Institute creates and advances a dynamic understanding of the collaborative dimensions of the art and business of film.  The Hanson Film Institute provides and supports educational programs, public events, and creative projects.

 

Victoria Westover is the Program Director of the Hanson Film Institute at The University of Arizona. Vicky oversees all aspects of the Institute.   Vicky is a collaborating producer of diverse nationally recognized film programs, including Cine Mexico and Native Eyes Showcase.  She serves on the Board of Trustees of NALIP (National Association of Latino Independent Producers) and is an adjunct faculty member in the School of Media Arts at The University of Arizona.  A native of Washington, D.C., Vicky is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in Photography, and she completed Masters Course work in American Studies with a concentration in Anthropology. Vicky has trained and worked in non-profit management for 19 years.  She worked for six years for the Library of Congress, including as the Assistant to the Curator of Exhibits.  As the Executive Director of the Baltimore Film Forum, Vicky directed numerous repertory seasons of cinema, international film festivals, competitions, and special programs, including the Baltimore International Film Festival and the longest running Russian Film Festival in the United States. She received a Governor’s citation for her work promoting filmmaking in Maryland. Vicky taught photography and film appreciation courses over a 17-year period at the Maryland Institute and other institutions, and she is the co-founder of a Baltimore City youth media program. Vicky served as an art critic for Patuxent Publishing and has over 50 articles on art criticism published.  She has served on numerous non-profit boards, committees, and panels, including for the Maryland State Arts Council, the AFI in Washington, and the Tucson Cinema Foundation, and was a guest on Congressman Kweisi Mfume’s television show on African-American filmmaking. Vicky is the Founding Producer of Independent Eye, which aired for many years on Maryland Public Television; was the Executive Producer of the 2007 award-winning short film, Alma; and served as Producer for the independent feature, Red 71.

Chicago pianist-singer Judy Roberts and saxophonist Greg Fishman join Tucson singer-songwriter Marilyn Harris in a holiday concert at the Steinway Piano Gallery (2850 E. Speedway Blvd.) on Thursday, December 20th at 7:00pm.

Repertoire will include Judy's special arrangements of such holiday standards as "Let It Snow," "Christmastime Is Here" and her tribute to Arizona, "Winter Wonderland/Desert Wonderland".  Marilyn will debut four of her Christmas songs for Tucson audiences, as well as harmonizing with Judy and Greg on swinging versions of the classic holiday songs everyone loves.

Famous for the past two decades as "Chicago's Favorite Jazz Woman", Judy is best known for her hard-swinging piano playing, her ability to combine lush and sensitive vocals with rapid-fire scat singing, and for her unique ability to communicate with her audience in a relaxed and intimate style. Judy's husband Greg Fishman has established himself as a dynamic tenor saxophonist and flutist, and is regarded as one of the top jazz educators in the country.  The couple is relocating to Arizona this fall.  

The Steinway Piano Gallery of Tucson is supplying the world famous Steinway Piano for this event.

The multifaceted Martin Short will perform on Sunday, March 9, 6:30 pm, at The University of Arizona Centennial Hall. Proceeds will benefit the University of Arizona Hillel Foundation.

Martin Short made his big screen debut in "Three Amigos" and has continued to land comedic roles in releases such as “Inner Space”, “Mars Attacks,” “Jungle to Jungle,” “The Big Picture,” “Father of the Bride,” and “Father of the Bride II.” 

Martin has also written, produced and starred in highly acclaimed comedy specials for television for which he won two Cable Ace awards and an Emmy Award. He also received accolades for his work on the stage, earning a Tony Award nomination, a Theatre World Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for the Broadway production of “The Goodbye Girl.” In 2003, Martin starred in “The Producers” at The Pantages Theater.

In 2005, Martin wrote and starred in “Jiminy Glick in La La Wood.” Most recently in 2006, Martin starred in FAME BECOMES ME, A Musical Comedy, on Broadway which he also wrote.

After 50 years, city inspectors are threatening to close Silvers’ Market, but Jamar, Billy & Chavez scheme to defy the bureaucrats and bring the store to profitability. Nostalgic humor and the unrelenting sarcasm of familiar friends highlight this comedy about a time when human values supersede monetary concerns.

A GRANDMOTHER'S GENEROSITY HELPS 'STORIES SOAR!' AT CORBETT ELEMENTARY

More children's stories come to life with a unique performance by Stories that Soar!

Friday, November 9, 2007 at 9:00am at Corbett Elementary , 5949 E 29^th Street , Stories that Soar! proudly presents their third show of the season through the sponsorship of local philanthropist. The students of Corbett have written hundreds of stories in hopes of seeing there very own literary creations soar to life in a special live production developed especially for them.

In their third year operating under the non-profit SharMoore Children's Productions, Stories that Soar! empowers children to believe in themselves by giving voice to their original words and creative ideas. The Stories that Soar! (STS) theatre program invites elementary school students to voluntarily "feed" the hungry, talking Magic Boxâ„¢ their stories, promising to give them back magic! The result is both fascinating and delightful, with stories ranging from introspective to completely outrageous. The STS professional acting troupe selects about twenty-five stories from the hundreds submitted for artistic interpretation. After working collaboratively to transform the stories, using dance, acrobatics, music, comedy, drama and more, the adult performers return to the school to give the children their stories back as a culturally rich, multi-media live performance.

Each of the ten elementary schools that Stories that Soar! will serve this season rely on diverse funding sources to secure the $4,000 each show takes to produce. Fortunately for the children at Corbett Elementary a retired school teacher and grandmother of one of the attending students wholeheartedly believes in the power of this program. She is sponsoring the school for the second year in a row.   She chooses to contribute to great educational programs that encourage and inspire youth to use literature and creativity for greater things.
