Tucson: Grass Roots effort to support the Arts!

From: Heidi Nobantu Saul [mailto:heidi@nobantu.com]
Sent: Thursday, February 05, 2009 8:36 PM
Subject: Grass Roots effort to support the Arts!

Support arts funding in our stimulus package, here’s why!

This past weekend’s Winter Council was a rich dialogue on the current state of affairs in the economy and the arts community.  One of our discussions centered on arts advocacy.   In particular, countering the negative and false information currently circulating about the NEA portion of the economic stimulus package.  This group, working with Dance/USA staffer Amy Fitterer, collectively created the “top ten list” you see below (and attached) as a way to counter this misinformation.  It is based on solid research data and is meant to directly counter the “arts spending is pork” myth.  As you all well know, the arts are good for the economy and we have the facts on our side.

We intend to spread this document far and wide – via Email, Facebook and other social networking sites, and invite you to do the same.

The NEA funding is under attack and we need to act and act now -- not just for this stimulus package, but to put these false arguments to rest once and for all.

Warm Regards

The arts are part of the solution!

The arts are a powerful economic engine and play a vital role in our communities, enhancing each of our lives.

Get the facts, not the spin!  Let’s keep and increase arts funding in the stimulus package!

Here are ten reasons why the arts should matter to you.

1.       Increased funding in the arts invests in an industry that supports jobs, generates government revenue, is the cornerstone of tourism and economic development, and drives a creativity-based economy.

2.       Nonprofit arts organizations and their audiences generate $166.2 billion in economic activity every year.

3.       Nonprofit arts organizations return nearly $30 billion in government revenue every year.

4.       Nonprofit arts organizations and their audiences support 5.7 million jobs.

5.       Investment in non-profit arts generates a spectacular 7:1 return on investment. That is, $1 invested in the arts generated $7 in the community.  $50 million to the NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) would generate $350 million in economic activity.

6.       The arts are shovel-ready – each dollar of arts funding goes to work immediately creating jobs, attracting investment, generating tax revenue, and stimulating local economies through tourism and consumer purchases.

7.       Artists constitute a sizeable class of workers -- only slightly smaller than the total number of active-duty and reserve personnel in the U.S. military.

8.       The performing arts draw more attendance than sports. 70% of Americans attend at least one performing arts event per year versus 53% that attend one sports event.

9.       Children who receive an arts education on a regular basis are more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and less likely to engage in delinquent behavior.

10.   A strong arts and culture sector and a creative workforce attract and keep businesses in the community - it is one of the top ten attributes corporations look for in a new business site.

The arts are not “pork spending” -- even if you are not an arts patron, the money spent on non-profit arts funding benefits you.

The money allocated for the National Endowment for the Arts represents less than 1% of the proposed economic stimulus package.

The arts are part of the solution!

Comedy Improvisation - What a wonderful class to get you to think fast, think on your feet, loosen up your body, and how you move.  In this class, you're also taught dialects.  You don't have to be a "funny person" to do really well in this class, to have a fantastic time, and to learn a great deal.  Comedy improv isn’t half as hard as it looks when you learn it from a former Saturday Night Live cast member.  Anna gives you the keys: formats, dialects, and structure.  Come play, have a ball, and enjoy discovering how funny you can be.  Also, for acting students, studying comedy improv loosens up the body, helps you think fast on your feet, introduces dialects, and sharpens your timing.

Beowulf Alley Theatre Company, a 501 (c)(3) organization, is committed to enriching the community and enhancing appreciation of the arts through the production of innovative, invigorating theatre and theatrical education with the highest standards for acting and production. Equal and fair treatment will be provided to all participants regardless of race, color, national origin, ancestry, religion, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, familial status and/or marital status. Founded on the basis of dialogues with local theatre artists who wanted a permanent home to practice their craft, its intimate 95-seat theatre provides a facility that meets professional standards where performing artists, educators, and technicians can present their skills. Because Beowullf Alley engages a talent and volunteer pool that calls Tucson “home” for its productions, the Theatre is committed to helping grow a new generation of Tucson talent with its educations programs for young people. And true to its roots, the Theatre maintains ongoing dialogues with the community, including Dialogues with theatregoers after the first Sunday matinee performance of each of its main stage plays, at Readers’ Theatre nights, and other presentations, providing an opportunity for theatregoers to discuss the plays with the director and artists. Writers who cover the Tucson arts scene say the Theatre provides its audiences with “the best total package”—plays, performances and productions that are high in artistic and technical quality. Beowulf Alley has received critical acclaim, including two Mac Awards and seven MAC nominations. The company has presented over 200 performances to Tucson audiences since 2002 and has served hundreds of theatre artists. Thetheater also provides performance and rehearsal space for other Tucson theater companies. For more information, log on towww.beowulfalley.org. Subject: [IFASA] Art of Pitching Workshop

The Hanson Film Institute is again offering their highly popular Art of Pitching workshop.  I have taken the workshop and know many other people who have.  We all agree that it is a terrific source of information and feedback, whether you are working on a screenplay or seeking funding, or intend to do either in the future.

__._,_.___

The Hanson Film Institute at The University of Arizona presents

The Art of Pitching Workshop

Saturday & Sunday, March 7-8, 2009 • Noon - 4 pm

The University of Arizona, School of Media Arts: 845 N. Park Avenue, (Marshall Building), Second Floor

Facilitated by Lorna Soroko, Producer/Writer/Development Executive, with Ronnie Clemmer, Visiting L.A.-based Television/Film/Documentary Producer

Do you have an idea that you think would make a great feature film or TV movie or series? Maybe you know someone with a life story that you think should be a movie? In this workshop, you’ll learn how to turn that idea into an effective pitch, designed for presentation to entertainment industry professionals. By the end of the workshop, the participants will pitch their project to a visiting L.A.-based Television/Film/Documentary Producer, and each participant will receive valuable individual feedback with specific recommendations for project and pitch improvement.

This workshop, open to students and members of the community, will cover pitching – what to put in, what to leave out, how to present it, and how to create an original, compelling logline. Participants will practice pitching and will receive feedback from the workshop leader designed to improve the pitch. Also discussed will be: how to get to the pitching stage, writing and pitching for a specific market, knowing the buyer you’re submitting/pitching to, and ideas on how to stay attached to the project. Visiting producer Ronnie Clemmer will demonstrate a pitch he presented that led to a sale and production. On the second day of the workshop, participants will pitch to Mr. Clemmer and Ms. Soroko, and will receive “notes” on the pitches, assessing strengths, weaknesses and market potential, based on the leaders’ extensive experience with development and production. Workshop participants will benefit from hearing feedback on all of the projects.

Tucson: Serious actor needed for ambitious student film

Serious actor needed for ambitious student film

We are looking for a male actor who can play a late 30's early 40's man. The role will require serious reflection on death and dying, and the ability to subtly and powerfully express emotion through facial expressions.
The film is low budget as we are students, but we are dedicated to finding a great actor, and so compensation can be discussed if needed.
We are shooting on a RED camera, and have a very talented and dedicated crew. This film will be entered into many festivals and will provide great exposure.
The current shooting dates are March 13,14 and 15. The audition date will be determined during callbacks.
Please respond with a resume, head shots, and/or a link to your website.
Thank you,
Nick
