Friends of Film in Arizona,

 

I, like most people, hate to admit defeat, but admit it I must. HB2127 is essentially dead, and, along with it, the prospect of bringing thousands of jobs and millions in economic impact to AZ from an industry wanting to come here. Instead, a small, powerful group of our state’s leaders have decided to reject a lucrative, clean industry that produces one of our country’s biggest, virtually recession proof, exports.

 

We wish we knew why. We appreciate those legislators who have been straight with us. Sometimes we made changes to the bill based on their concerns, and sometimes we just agreed to respectfully disagree.  But for leaders and/or their staff to remain silent, to be duplicitous despite opportunities designed for input, or to break promises made, this is counter productive.

 

What is positive about all this? For three years in a row, the local film and tourism industries marched these production incentives bills through the Senate and on to the House where all three times we had the votes we needed to pass -- which is exactly why each Speaker wouldn’t allow our bills to be heard.  

 

What’s positive is the support we’ve had from the legislators who have stood by us all this time…especially Senator John Nelson who tirelessly sponsored the bills, spent countless hours listening to stakeholders and legislators and presided over the careful crafting of these bills, designed to benefit this state.

 

What’s also positive for me and my fellow Arizona Film & Media Coalition board members is to see that grass roots political efforts really can make a difference, and we have all of you (the only ones who are still reading this) to thank for that. Your commitment, enthusiasm and passion for this industry and this state make this extremely disappointing outcome more bearable.

 

One last thing…this bill was never about “Hollywood” but about the jobs, the nurturing of our existing talent pool, the hotel room nights, the car rentals, the small businesses that would have grown, the film tourism that would have resulted, and, yes, the…dare it say it…additional city, county and state tax revenues.

MOVIES ON THE MOON

Participants (ages 9-18) in the ACTING & VIDEO WORKSHOP will use their own camcorders or cell phones to create short silent pictures with the fantasy world of Valley of the Moon as their set location. We will do theater games and learn techniques for acting for the camera, script writing, storyboarding, and simple rules of video production. 

 

 

INSTRUCTOR JANA SEGAL

Jana Segal earned her BA in Speech and Theatre from Avila College. Her musical, "Seeker" won third place at the American College Theatre Festival. She went on to receive her MFA in Dramatic Writing from Brandeis University. Her script, "Model T Biscuits" won first place at the IFFF and Moondance screenwriting contests. Jana wrote, directed, and produced the comedy short, "The Bath-a-holic" and the Western short, "Desert Angel." Jana has taught workshops in screenwriting, storyboarding and filmmaking for children. Jana organized the Reel Inspiring Film Contest and professional level directing, acting, and screenwriting workshops for Reel Inspiration.

The state budget was passed by the House last night without our bill included in it. This is the death knell for HB2127 unless we can get it on the agenda today. The Governor needs to ask the Speaker to put it on the agenda.

 

 We have the votes, 33 (we need 31), so we are confident that it will pass. Apparently, they are confident that it will pass too. Hence, the bill was held in the House for the third time in three years.

 

By holding the bill in the House, the Governor avoids having to veto it.

 

Call right NOW, and there is still a chance we can change the course of HB2127.

There is no easy way to tell everyone this. I wish I knew how to ease into it or find some sort of positive in it, but I can't. 

 

Unless the governor comes out in support, the Mulit-media Production Incentive bill is dead. It will not be heard in the House this session. 

 

Late last night when the budget was finally passed it was passed with some compromises that no one really wanted to make to avoid a veto from the governor. She wanted more cuts than the legislature was willing to make so they compromised. One of the compromises was to not put any new tax credits in the budget, not just ours but a whole slew of them. I don't know the exact number but it doesn't matter anyway. So to get a budget passed that she would accept that's what they did.

 

We have the votes to pass the House, just as we did in the Senate. We were told it would be heard today and would be posted this morning but during the late night hassles over the budget we were sacrificed. We had hoped that when it passed the governor would feel enough pressure to not veto it and just let it become law. To protect the same political party governor from that kind of pressure, the leadership made the decision to not force her into something that could possibly damage her public image. This is where politics and doing what's right collide. It becomes very personal … elections over governance. 

 

So as of now HB-2127 won't be heard. If it is heard it will pass and this very conservative governor will have to let it go unsigned or veto it. Neither option would help her already rocky relationship with the legislature, and because they still have to work together on other state business our bill is being sacrificed.

 

Unless there is some dramatic turn around in Brewer's position its over.

 

Our one last hope is that she hears from people about losing their homes, their jobs and any potential for another in the business. Call right NOW, We are also trying to set up a meeting with her office and the Disney people to dhow that the economic effect would be immediate, not the two years down the road that the state study projects. There is still a slight chance but it's up to you.

Arizona Theatre Company is holding general season auditions for Equity and non-Equity actors for the 2012-2013 Season in Phoenix, May 22-23 and Tucson, May 25.

 

Auditions for Phoenix non-Equity actors will take place on Tuesday, May 22 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Phoenix auditions for Equity actors will take place on Wednesday May 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Phoenix auditions will be held at the Herberger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe St. in downtown Phoenix.

 

Tucson auditions will take place on Friday, May 25. Auditions for Equity and non-Equity actors will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3p.m. to 6 p.m. Tucson auditions will be held at the Temple of Music and Art, upstairs in the rehearsal hall, 330 S. Actors must bring a recent headshot and current resume. Each actor is required to prepare two contrasting monologues totaling no more than four minutes combined. Actors may substitute a song for one of the two pieces. Musical accompaniment will be provided if sheet music is presented, and the total length of the audition must not exceed four minutes. A cassette/CD player and piano will be available for those wishing to provide pre-recorded or their own accompaniment. No music director or choreographer will be present at general auditions.

 

Arizona Theatre Company is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to non-traditional and multi-cultural casting. Artists of color are urged to audition. Callbacks for specific roles in specific productions will be held at later dates throughout the season. All actor materials are kept on file for two years. Consequently, all actors who auditioned during the 2011-2012 Season are not required to audition at this time. Non-Equity auditions are limited to actors age 16 and older.

In a few weeks, The Rogue begins a great new adventure. We leave for India for a 3-week residency at the Jagriti Theatre in Bangalore where we will perform Shipwrecked!  Bangalore is a thriving commercial center in India, with a large English-speaking population.

 

In preparation for this extraordinary trip, we invite you to attend an open rehearsal of Shipwrecked! on Tuesday, May 8th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the rehearsal will be available at the door with donations gratefully accepted. MAGIC HOUR: Works of Fiction by UA’s BFA Junior Class at The Loft Cinema

TUCSON, ARIZONA – Free and open to the public, The Loft Cinema presents a screening of short student films titled, Magic Hour, fiction films by the BFA junior class, on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at 7:00pm.

What does a Beatles tribute band, masturbation, love (requited), our animalistic nature, good people doing bad things, a psychopath with a good sense of fashion, a very angry father, love (unrequited), and a smart 10-year old girl have in common? They are all part of Magic Hour, a free screening highlighting short fiction films made by this year’s junior BFA students in the University of Arizona's School of Theatre, Film & Television!
