Tucson, AZ -- Pima Community College Music presents the guest recital GOOD VIBRATIONS: Symphony Low Brass featuring Michael Becker, trombone; Joseph Muñoz, trombone; Steve Gamble, bass trombone; David Morgan, tuba; Mark Nelson, guest conductor and tuba; Victor Valenzuela, horn; and Shawn Campbell, horn.

 

The powerful and elegant performance features members of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and friends. The sonorous sounds of low brass resonate in an eclectic mix of music from the renaissance to current day. Program selections include “Sonata” by Daniel Speer, “Three Renaissance Dances” by Michael Praetorius, “Sinfonia No. 1,” “Sinfonia No. 4” and “Fugue in g minor” by J.S. Bach, and “To Be or Not To Be” by Henry Tomasi. The performance also includes “Trio Sonata” by Arcangelo Corelli, “Blackbird” by David Gilliland, “Lament” by Henry Purcell, “Toccata” by Phil Snedecor, “Chorale for six low brass in the style of Bruckner” by Enrique Crespo, along with three selections by Stephen Foster.

Paul is kind, awkward, handsome in a quirky way, and way out of his league with the precocious Luba  (Luba is in her 40s and remembering the three greatest loves of her life, portraying herself at 16, 30s and 40s). George is a wealthy, retired businessman, romantic, sensual and happy to cook and keep house. The play does contain adult language and themes. Performance dates are December 6^th, 7^th, 13^th and 14^th, closing Friday December 20^th.

Desdemona: A Tale About a Handkerchief by Paula VogelMacbeth's Knife by William Shakespeare (adapted by Nobody)

Beowulf Alley Theatre Company presents two adaptations of Shakespeare's towering tragedies, Desdemona: A Tale About a Handkerchief and Macbeth's Knife, opening September 6th at 11 S. 6th Avenue.

Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief by Pulitzer-Proze winning playwright Paula Vogel is a comic deconstruction of Shakespeare's Othello. Focusing on the long-suffering wives and women of the play, Vogel's vision is rich in tongue-in-cheek humor and raises important questions on the treatment of women.

Macbeth's Knife is an adaptation of Shakespeare's Tragedy of Macbeth that focuses on the psychological responses to war and loss. Macbeth has returned victorious from a bloody conflict. Lady Macbeth has lost a child. The murderous couple is driven by visions of destruction and tragedy. They are too "supp'd full of horrors."

Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief features Candace Bean, Diana Ouradnik, and Nicole Scott.

Macbeth's Knife features Aaron Guisinger, Bree Boyd-Martin, Sara Jackson, Gary Tyrell, India Osborne, Shannon Rzucidlo, Armen Sarrafian, Melenie Kersey, and Andrew Kincaid.

TOUGH "YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING"

Pretending to be famed writer, journalist and social commentator Joan Didion sounds daunting enough, yet here is Toni Press-Coffman doing exactly that, onstage in the upstairs Cabaret Space at the downtown Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave.

She is performing the demanding 90-minute monologue “The Year of Magical Thinking” adapted by Didion from her award-winning book of the same name. Vanessa Redgrave performed the role on Broadway in 2007.

The autobiographical book describes the author’s response when her husband of nearly 40 years, the writer John Gregory Dunne, died of a heart attack at the dinner table in 2003. Less than two years later, their daughter Quintana, passed away following a lengthy illness.

Didion’s stated purpose for writing the book, and adapting the play, is to remind us all that the story of her loved ones dying will also be our story one day – every one of us. And in doing so, also remind us that even a profound and devastating loss can be overcome.

Whether you want to be reminded or not is up to you.

Press-Coffman’s studied presentation, directed by Christopher Johnson, is a brave performance of understated complexity, both demanding and emotionally grueling. A light-hearted evening of theater this is definitely not.

That title comes from Didion’s own way of dealing with the harsh realities she faced immediately after her husband’s passing. Clearing out her life, she did manage to dispose of his clothes, but she couldn’t give away his shoes – he would need them when he came back, she insisted.

Such magical thinking eased the pathway that circumstance forced her to follow. Yet, this personality also works against her in taking the book from page to stage. That deliberate quality which added literary heft to her experience does not lend itself to theatrical expression.

Press-Coffman has lots of material to get through, but very little opportunity to show us that the words of the script (often taken straight from the book) represented her inner thoughts.

As one critic phrased it, comparing “Magical Thinking” to Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America,” Didion is a starker and sterner writer who would rather throw up than descend into the mawkish sentiment that Kushner would eagerly embrace. Or even more directly, say, Mitch Albom’s “Tuesdays with Morrie.”

Didion’s carefully described recollections may provide lots more detail than you really need to appreciate the tragedies in her life.

“The Year of Magical Thinking” runs through Sept.15, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays, in the Cabaret Space at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. YOU CAN!

COME THIS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3rd rehearsal!!
Rhythm Industry Performance Factory, 1013 S. Tyndall Ave.

We will be part of Tucson Meet Yourself and the All Souls Procession Weekend!

• TUESDAY rehearsals and SUNDAY dance class included (along with additional dancer rehearsal right after class) to include basic skills and instruction.
• Fall membership will include specific dates September through mid October/Tucson Meet Yourself, October through to the All Souls Procession with a wrap up ending before the Thanksgiving holidays.

ONLY $40 per month/$25 for student - scholarship possible, please ask!

Sol Axé is honored to be a project under Many Mouths One Stomach, the organization behind the All Souls Procession.

We will be participating, and will have a separate dance only "ala" beginning after Tucson Meet Yourself...stay tuned. A portion of the proceeds will support the Procession!
