The Mystery Genius of Father Brown II will present four of Father Brown's classic mysteries.  Father Brown was a character created by G. K. Chesteron.   Father Brown was a shy Catholic priest who continually found himself at the scene of crimes.  Unlike Sherlock Holmes, who deduced his solutions based on the facts on the case, Father Brown solved mysteries using  his knowledge of human nature.

  Enjoy Tony Eckstat (pictured), Denise Blum (pictured) , Callie Hutchinson and Bruce Bieszki as The Comedy Playhouse presents The Mystery Genius of  Father Brown II.  Admission is $12, with discounts available.  The Mystery Genius of Father Brown II plays November 8^th to November 16^th.  Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm. A Christmas Carol

Opens November 22

The Comedy Playhouse will present James Gooden's adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens starting November 22^nd.  James has added music, singing and dancing to make A Christmas Carol a holiday show the whole family will enjoy.   The Comedy Playhouse will present this timeless classic of hope and redemption in an expanded schedule.

  Featured performers in A Christmas Carol include Jon Benda as Scrooge,  Rebecca Neisen, Jacob Walters and Mike Saxon.   Admission is $18, with discounts available.

University of Arizona Theatre Alumni & Tucson Filmmakers Unite for Napa Valley Film Festival Sony Film Challenge

November 6, 2013

 

Tucson, Arizona — Tucson filmmakers Scot Litteer, Marcus De Leon, Fred Porter and Ashley Maddox, and four University of Arizona graduates are joining forces November 12-17 to form Team Arizona as one of five filmmaker teams — and the only team from Arizona - invited to compete in the first-ever, Napa Valley Film Festival, 55-hour, Sony film competition.

The talented, all-UA cast is Mike Reasor (BFA 2012 Acting), RD Mower (BFA 2012 Acting), Samantha Kolko (BA 2012 Theatre with minor in Film & Television) and Geri Courtney-Austein (BA 2012 Mathematics). All are currently launching their acting careers in Hollywood.

Courtney-Austein said, "This sounds so incredibly exciting, I knew I just had to get the time off work and drive up from L.A."

Reasor said, "This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I really trust these filmmakers."

"This is going to be insane," said De Leon. "I'm very grateful to Scot for inviting me onto this team. We have the awesome UA cast, I know them all, and each of us filmmakers have areas of experience that should mesh really well in that extreme pressure environment."

Located across the spectacular Napa Valley, the prestigious Film Festival features major Hollywood studio premieres and over 125 films from around the world. This year's Festival also features a tribute to noted actor, Colin Farrell, who will be among the celebrities attending.

On November 12, filmmaker teams will be assigned a story genre — such as drama or comedy — along with a location, line of dialogue and a prop to incorporate into their 5-minute films. They will have until 9pm on November 14 to write, film, edit, score and deliver their films.

For the remaining three days of the Festival, Team Arizona's film will screen in all Festival theaters while an industry panel judges it. The winning film will be announced November 17 during the Festival's closing night gala.

The film teams will be assigned brand new, Sony professional cameras, featuring revolutionary 4K technology. The cameras will arrive in Napa from Asia on November 11, just in time for the film teams to be the first filmmakers to use them.

Team Arizona has already begun preparations in Tucson before they travel to Napa on November 11.

"We feel like we're representing Southern Arizona filmmaking on a very big stage," De Leon said, "and we want to be way ready with story ideas."

At the dawn of the 1930s in Berlin, the Nazi party quietly grows stronger. Set in the seedy underbelly of the infamous Kit Kat Klub, CABARET revolves around 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles (Lucille Petty) and her relationship with a young American writer Clifford Bradshaw (Nick Trice). A sub-plot involves a doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider (Susan Arnold) and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz (David Alexander Johnston), a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the enigmatic Master of Ceremonies (Christopher Johnson), who serves as a constant metaphor for the tenuous state of late Weimar Germany.

Casting calls for feature film: "Wayward Highway"
Logline:
"With the help of Hawk, a castaway Native American, Kung Fu disciple Phong seeks to establish a temple to pass on his dead master's teaching, only to find tragic incidences resulted from a corrupted society."

Casting the following roles (Note: Character traits can be subjected to future changes):
1/. Hawk
Native American Male
Age late 30s- early 50s, calm looking, but can also be unpredictable. 
Understanding about Native American culture/ rituals or speaking Native language (like Navajo) is a plus! - Also let us know if you are willing to smoke in a few scenes (with a smoke pipe)
Description: HAWK, an eccentric Native American man who lives in an abandoned church. He is a rebel in his tribe, a castaway, and hard to understand. He is wise in his ancient teaching. 

2/.Ajamu Vidor
African American Male, young looking, slim or fit, be able to perform physical actions (Knowing martial arts, or acrobatic, gymnastic skills is a big plus)
Age: 14 - 23 (Talent who is under 18 will be required for parents or guardians' permission to be casted) 
Description: AJAMU is the adopted son of the Vidor family. He is also Phong's dearest student, the one that reminds Phong of his master's relationship. Ajamu has a rough past, and has major conflicts with Jack Vidor. Ajamu believes violence is the way to solve his life problems. However deep inside in his nature, he is kind and caring.

Age: late 20s - early 30s, good looking, glamorous looking.
Character: ANGELA adopted a son names Ajamu. She is the wife of city councilman Jack Vidor.

Caucasian Male
Age: 40s - early 50, man in suit, politician looking 
Let us know if you are willing to smoke for several scenes.
Character: JACK is the city councilman, powerful and authoritative. He has good appearance to the public. Jack has hidden issues with alcohol and violence. Not that Jack does not know about his harm and evil doing, but it is that he determines it is too late to go back.

Time: Monday, November 11th, 2013 - from 2 pm to 5pm.
The audition will primarily involve sight reading, and a personal interview with the director and associate producers.

The goal? All 30 plays must be performed in 60 minutes, and the clock is ticking.

The catch? The audience decides the order of the plays.

The reward? If the actors meet their 60-minute deadline, they get to eat cookies. If they don’t meet it, they get to watch the audience eat the cookies.

 

 

 

SHORT ATTENTION SPAN THEATRE is an original, ensemble-written show featuring 30 short plays in 60 minutes. Based on The Neo-Futurists’ TOO MUCH LIGHT MAKES THE BABY GO BLIND, these performances will take place on the second and third Saturday nights of nearly every month throughout the 2013-2014 Etcetera season. Each show will be performed in an entirely new order, decided by the audience. Each month will feature new, original material. 

 

Originally created in the Fall of 2011 at the University of Arizona, this revival of SHORT ATTENTION SPAN THEATRE pushes the boundaries of what a two-minute play can be. SAST involves a mixture of sketch comedy and devised work.  The ensemble-written plays may be fiction or non-fiction, realist or abstract, movement-based or focused on spoken text. The only restriction upon the scripts is time. As a result, the show comments on current events, personal experiences, or any other pressing issues that the creators believe are important. SAST’s main goal is to explore theatrical expression within a time limit. Rather, we’re exploring 30 different theatre experiences within 60 minutes.

 Call for Actors in New Public Access Comedy Sitcom ! (Tucson)

Hello,

I have written a comedy sitcom and will be producing it to be aired on the local Tucson Public Access Channel. 

There are three main characters: 2 guys and 1 girl. All three characters should be between the ages of 18 - 34 with an intelligent and/or odd sense of humor. 

The first male character should be sarcastic yet composed, he doesn't really care about too much and doesn't really care for socialization. 

The second male character is very zany, and should embody a physical brand of humor. He is always trying to change the world, but most people aren't as creative as him so his antics come across as somewhat "over the top." He is usually misunderstood by people, but could really care less -- he is full steam ahead no matter what! 

The female character is kind of like the first male character, not so boisterous but very smart with a keen sense of humor. She is often creeped out by weird males. 

For the first episode I will also be looking for a character who is a young perverted preacher. A goofy hypocrite. -- he can be in age anywhere ranging from 25- 50.

Call Sheet is the Independent Film Association of Southern Arizona's  electric newsletter identifying the Top Ten items of interest to actors and filmmakers in Southern Arizona.

 

1.  Ambiguity.  Humans and Fido Productions is completing shooting of a feature length action and adventure film called Ambiguity that has primarily been shot on location in Guatemala.  The last portion of the film will be shot here in and around Tucson.  They are looking for actors to double roles shot in Guatemala, actors for a sequel to be shot next year, voice over actors, extras, and select members of the US camera team and the US post production team.  If you are interested, send your name, resume and headshot (for actors) to griselw@gmail.com.

 

2.  Almost Famous.  The Almost Famous Film Festival (thea3f.net) has just opened registration for its 10th Annual 48 Hour Film Challenge to be held in February 2014.  Almost Famous is based out of Phoenix, but they make participation from Southern Arizona exceptionally easy. It's one of the most highly regarded 48 hour challenges in the nation.  Go to thea3f.net now for details and for a serious early registration discount.

 

3.  The Importance of Being Earnest.  The Arizona Theatre Company is presenting Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest at the The Temple of Music and Art (330 South Scott).  This is a great opportunity to watch some exceptional theater (or for film directors to check out some of Arizona's best actors). We recommend buying tickets on line, because many of these performances will sell out.  Go to ArizonaTheatre.org

 

4.  $100 for Best Cinema Kiss.   IFASA's Tuesday, November 19 Meeting at Gangplank (19 East Pennington) will feature a Best Cinema Kiss Contest with a $100 cash prize going to the winning couple.  Come with a partner or meet one on set.  Chose your own wardrobe, chose your own make up, chose your own motivation.  We will film all configurations of contestants (with at least 18 years of experience). and will choose the best at the end of the evening.  Oh yes, there will also be a panel of DP's to enlighten us on other things cinematic, and demonstrations of green screen, jibs, lights, and new cameras. 5.  Tucson Stage.  There is no excuse for not being a member of Tucson Stage.  It is a fantastic website and blog space for film, theater, dance, and the arts.  If you are interested in film or acting, you should be on Tucson Stage's e-mail list that posts auditions, events, and going's on.  It's the best.  And it's free.  It's managed most professionally by Bill Dell -- a man to whom we all owe much. thank you Bill.

 

6.  November 8th is First Friday (9 PM).  If you have never spent a First Friday with Max Cannon (either in the back of his van or in his theatrical venue -- the Loft) those who have done so, recommend it most highly.  After 11 AM on each First Friday, anyone can submit an original film that runs less than 15 minutes.  The Loft plays the first three minutes without interruption, after which the audience decides if the film will go forward or if it will be stopped dead in its tracks by the infamous Gong.  Rules in the back of the van are ad hoc and negotiated by the consenting adults involved.  The Loft.  3233 East Speedway.  A good time on First Fridays or on any other day of the month.

 

 7.  PCC Western Action Adventure.  Pima Community College's Advanced Video Class is shooting an Western Action Adventure (aka, Six Guns, Horses, and Zombies) on November 8, 9, 10, and 11.  This is always a top notch production.  If you are interested in being an extra or if you are interested in sponsoring the production with a hot meal -- contact pima.deadmeat2013@gmail.com   It's a great group of young filmmakers and actors.

 

8.  TPAC Artspace Webinars.  The Tucson Pima Arts Council is presenting an Art Space Webinar on Thursday, November 7 at Noon (100 North Stone Suite ).  It''s a convergence of art, film and the internet.  Check it out.

 

9.  Not The Same Movies.  How many times have you bitched about the big Cineplexes all running the same mainstream movies.  If you want something different -- reward the theaters offering something different.  Try Crossroads Theaters.  4811 East Grant Road.  It's cheap and its good.

 

10.  Run for the Board.  If you want to become more involved in Independent Film in Southern Arizona consider running to be an Officer or Member of the Board of the Independent Film Association of Southern Arizona. Santa Cruz Shoestring Players continue their sixth season of
shows with Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman's "You Can't Take It With
You." Auditions will be on Wednesday, November 13 and Thursday,
November 14 at 6 p.m. at the Community Performance and Arts Center in
Green Valley, AZ, 1250 W. Continental Road.

This classic American comedy requires nine men: age range 20s -
70s. There are roles for seven women: age range 20s - 70s. There are
also several walk-on roles.

Audition process will involve cold readings from the script.
Interested parties with no prior acting experience are welcome to
audition.

Rehearsals are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings with a
2-week holiday break in December.

Play runs January 24 - February 1.

HEARTWARMING "CYCLING WITH MOLIERE"

Bicycles are the main transportation in this film about art and life imitating each other.

The French film “Cycling With Moliere,” with its noon Friday screening, opens the first full day of the fourth annual Loft Film Fest. Charming, whimsical, thoughtful and poignant (it is French, after all), this is a perfect choice for expressing the spirit of the fest.

Directed by Philippe Le Guay, from an idea developed by Fabrice Luchini and Le Guay, the film playfully explores the complicated egos of two actors who have been bristly friends for years.

Serge Tanneur (Fabrice Luchini) is an intense classical actor who suffered a nervous breakdown three years ago and has exiled himself into a creaky country house to live mostly in silence on a rain-swept coastal island.

Gauthier Valence (Lambert Wilson) of equally imposing talent, it is suggested, has sold out to the television broadcasters and finds himself the reluctant star of a very popular weekly TV show about a macho doctor who roams the world saving lives – usually by completing a difficult operation under extremely challenging conditions.

To set the wheels in motion, urbane Valence leaves his Paris home to convince Tanneur to appear in a stage production of  Moliere’s “The Misanthrope.” Determined to stay remote, Tanneur says “No.”

Equally determined, Valence says “Lets rehearse lines for a week, just to see, and then you can decide.”

As the two rehearse various scenes from “The Misanthrope” their own emotions come bubbling up from both past experiences and the play itself. Following along, we ride the roller coaster of their tangled relationship and also come to appreciate the depth of the actors who play these roles.

A lot of the fun comes in watching the power shifts back and forth between one and the other, as both jockey for the advantage in their day-to-day lives. When another island resident, an Italian divorcee (Maya Sansa) becomes an unexpected love interest – all the intellectual jousting becomes much more personal.

You needn’t be a Francophile or even a student of Moliere to appreciate the humor here. Tanneur is the great actor whose fragile personality forced him to retire from the stage. Valence is the great actor who compromised his aesthetic values.

Is one more unfortunate than the other? That question is evaluated, too.

 

"ENDER'S GAME"IS DEFINITELY OVER

Harrison Ford tells Asa Butterfield to straighten up and fly right.

On paper, the idea of Harry Potter in Outer Space sounds appealing. Visions of a gravity-free British boarding school with a faculty of caped alien academics definitely has some possibilities.

But the film version of Orson Scott Card’s best-selling young adult fiction novel “Ender’s Game” doesn’t equal the opportunities. This movie featuring Harrison Ford as the grumpy headmaster at a military cadet training school orbiting Earth was a generation in the making, it has been said.

If that’s true, the teams of writers and whatnot who failed over the decades to capture what made the book so popular still haven’t found it.

All the super-digital computerized battles-in-outer-space blather have about as much weight on the IMAX screen as airy clouds on the feathery wings of restless winds. And that’s the grand climactic battle, as well.

The first half of “Ender’s Game” (rated PG-13) documents the superior skills of 12-year-old Ender Wiggins (Asa Butterfield) whose supreme confidence is often interpreted as arrogance by those around him jealous of his success.

What message this conveys to the present tweener generation is open to adult discussion, but the word “fascist” could be whispered now and then.

For those keeping score at home, Viola Davis and Ben Kingsley do bring some weight to secondary roles. All the villains are animated insect-looking creatures which is another miscue. Without a vivid villain to defeat, the hero will never be very powerful.
