SAND 'N' FUN IN "BEACH BLANKET BEE BOP"

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

From left, Tarreyn Van Skyke, Jake Chapmanand Janee Page set the pace on this beach.

Surf’s up at the Gaslight Theatre, with all the boys and girls on summer vacation and heading for the water to make the most of their wave-riding opportunities in “Beach Blanket Bee Bop, or That’s for Surfin’!”

Yep, it’s the 1950s all over again, when innocence was a good thing and all the boys loved Barbara Ann. In this show, Janee Page has the role and looks like she knows all the words to every song the Beach Boys ever made.

Included on the Gaslight cast’s hit list are “(Having fun in the warm) California Sun,” “Where the Boys Are,” “Just Like Romeo and Juliet,” “Summertime Blues” and “Love Potion No.  9.”

With music like that, what could possibly go wrong?

At the Gaslight, everyone is always assured a happy ending, though the villains never tire of trying their darnedest to triumph over spunky determination and total confidence in the American Way.

Right from the start Barbara Ann has her eye on Moondoggie (Jake Chapman), who not only has his own surfboard but also has a knack for repairing the Tornado – the favorite ride running at the Surfside Boardwalk.

Only, it’s not running because punk surfer Moose (Todd Thompson) and his goofy sidekick Lunkhead (Charlie Hall) have sabotaged the Tornado and blamed it on Moondoggie.

Never mind about that name. Just know that in the Fifties, guys who were hip to the haps could be nicknamed “Moondoggie.”

So, OK, well Moondoggie’s nerdy sidekick is Melvin (Mike Yarema), a science wiz who will probably grow up to work at NASA. In a contest for which main man has the best sidekick, Melvin would also be the one most likely to win the senior class spelling bee.

But really, the cast member who steals every scene and pretty much takes the whole evening is Tarreyn Van Slyke as Francine, who’s got a really strong thing going for Melvin.

Francine is not only a blushing violet, she’s also the audience favorite whenever circumstance puts her into a potentially compromising (but in a nice way) situation with Melvin.

Adding more tradition is David Orley as Woody Longboard, the schoolteacher all the students like best. Turns out that back in the day, Woody was setting some legends of his own out on the water.

Another era with its own special music is remembered in the Gaslight’s aftershow olio, “Disco Gold.”

This was the era when fashion hid its face, turning colors that never occur in nature, as bellbottoms of every description compete with flowing wigs, lacy sleeves and high-heeled shoes (and that’s just for the guys).

Topping the song list this time are “Boogie Shoes,” “Boogie Oogie Oogie,” “I Just Want To Be Your Everything,” a “Saturday Night Fever” routine and an ABBA tribute.

“Beach Blanket Bee Bop or That’s For Surfin’!” continues through June 8, with shows at various times Tuesdays through Sundays at Gaslight Theatre, 7010 E. Broadway. Tickets are $18.50 general admission; $16.50 for seniors, students and military; $8.50 for children 12 and under.

Twelfth Night Auditions - The Red Barn Theatre Company

From: The Red Barn Theatre Company [mailto:theredbarntheatrecompany@gmail.com]
Sent: Sunday, April 6, 2014 7:27 AM
Subject: Twelfth Night Auditions - The Red Barn Theatre Company

Auditions for The Red Barn Theatre Company's July production, William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, is being held on April 14 and 15 from 7-9 PM.  We are looking for actors and actresses to fill all roles.  In addition, we are also looking for a couple of actors/actresses who can sing and play a musical instrument (guitar or ukulele).  Performers auditioning for parts should be prepared to cold-read from the script.

Shipwrecked in the coastal resort town of Illyria, Viola must disguise herself as a man to get a job with the town mover-and-shaker, Orsino.  Viola - now "Cesario" - is tasked with delivering love messages from Orsino to the beautiful and standoffish Olivia, but this is where it gets complicated: Viola is falling for Orsino - who still thinks she's a man - and Olivia seems to be taking a fancy to Orsino's cute young messenger Cesario...uh-oh.  Throw in Olivia's clever maid Maria and drunken Uncle Toby, who play a prank on Olivia's stick-in-the-mud advisor Malvolio, and you have a wild, wacky comedy as only Shakespeare can think up!

Twelfth Night
Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Whitney Morton Woodcock
Audition dates: Monday, April 14, 2014 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM
                       Tuesday, April 15, 2014
from 7:00 to 9:00 PM
Performances are from July 11 - 27, 2014.

ENDEARING "SOUTHERN COMFORTS"

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Pat Timm and Michael F. Woodson get to know each lots better in "Southern Comforts" at Live Theatre Workshop.

Prepare to be charmed by Live Theatre Workshop, with its production of “Southern Comforts” directed by Sheldon Metz giving gentle encouragement to senior citizens who find themselves living alone in their later years.

Thanks to modern medicine and the chaos of today’s culture wars that have turned society’s traditional roles topsy-turvy,  widows and widowers are living longer while divorce among the over-50 crowd has become quite common. Retirement is no longer a soft ride through one’s golden years with a loving companion.

The social media are hot wiring singles together who have children, stepchildren, grandchildren and complicated personal histories that would leave yesterday’s elders in terminal shock over today’s moral indiscretions.

None of that has been included in Kathleen Clark’s script, but it is implied as we see how it is impossible not to accumulate some substantial baggage by the time one gets to retire. Falling in love at 73 is much more complicated than falling in love at 17.

Clark sets her play on sweet southern church lady Amanda (Pat Timm) from the Appalachian mountains of Johnson City, Tennessee, who is visiting her daughter in upstate New Jersey. On an afternoon church errand Amanda stops at the door of Gus (Michael F. Woodson), bringing a Christian smile to his doorstep.

Grumpy old Gus, to be sure, will not be warmed by any voluntary acts of charity. But when a sudden shower forces Amanda to stay at Gus’ house a little longer than expected, they are forced into some awkward conversations as she waits out the rain.

Of course Amanda’s open southern manner is a whole new way of talking to the flinty Gus, hardened by his lifetime as a stone mason. On reflection, he kind of likes it. Not that he would ever admit it.

Woodson is a popular Tucson actor of long standing, and Timm a stage veteran relatively new to town. Together under Metz’ carefully shaded direction the couple’s friendship, so delicate in the beginning, develops both a believable chemistry and emotional momentum by intermission.

When Gus’ deliberately spare living room is filled with Amanda’s flowery furniture to start the second act, the audience is already laughing in anticipation of what will come next.

As we listen to these new lovers alternately bristle and compromise, risk personal feelings and wonder where the safe boundaries are, encourage each other while at the same time feel reluctant to give up to much ground too easily, thoughts of your  own aunts and uncles, other friends and relatives will come to mind.

So as Gus and Amanda find their way through “Southern Comforts,” they will be warming those moments of yours as well.

Performances continue through May 4 at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays, at Live Theater Workshop, 5317 E. Speedway Blvd. No performance April 20. Tickets are $18, with discounts available. For details and reservations, 520-327-4242, or visit www.livetheatreworkshop@gmail.com
