Tucson Fringe Theater Festival

How’s it going?  Are you holding up okay?  I know, I know—we’d all be doing better with a little bit more rain.  So, in case you haven’t heard, we’re having this event next month, a “festival,” if you will.  Yeah, that is how we got our name, actually.  This will be our fourth one!  Anyway, we’ve got a gaggle of performers (or is it a flock of performers?) lined up and the whole thing will be taking place the weekend of September 12th–14th, 2014.  You can buy your tickets online right now, or you can wait and buy them at the door, unless they’ve sold out in advance.

This year we have shows taking place at Club Congress and Fluxx.  We’re thrilled to be returning to the historic Club Congress, and we can’t tell you how excited we are to be making our debut at Fluxx!

Some of you may have attended one of our past festivals, or maybe 2014 will be your first.  Either way, we recommend you check out our handy new guide, How to Fringe (Tucson Style).  It’ll give you all the pertinent details on how to appropriately Fringe it up.  And it’ll probably make you laugh, but maybe we’re biased (or maybe we are as hilarious as we think we are.)

See you in September!

Performing Arts Season Spotlights 2014-2015

Zocalo Magazine – Tucson Arts and CultureSeptember 2, 2014 |
Tucson’s theatre scene is the opposite of bland. Eclectic, exciting, lively, raucous, serious, hilarious, heartbreaking, sweet, sensual, over-to-top, and down-to-earth, the blend is more wide-ranging and diverse than the current line-up of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavors. The variety speaks to the amazing amount of creative energy in the Old Pueblo, with performance companies that cater to both affluent patrons and audience members on a budget. The breadth truly is remarkable, so buy some tickets and embrace your town’s artistic, dramatic flair this year!
Sit back, relax, peruse Zócalo’s season snapshots and start booking some dates. We hope to see you at the show!

TUCSON CHINESE CELEBRATE MID AUTUMN WITH MULTICULTURAL HISTORY

Teams with Barbea Williams Performing Company on an original dance drama

On September 5th and 6th, the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center will celebrate its annual mid-Autumn Festival with a never-before-seen dance drama about Zheng He, a Ming Dynasty sea captain who traveled to Africa and beyond 70 years before the voyages of Columbus.  A collaboration with Barbea Williams Performing Company, the multimedia work includes a 14-foot-tall giraffe puppet crafted by local artist Mykl Wells.

Between 1405 and 1433, Zheng He sailed giant Treasure Ships throughout the southern oceans, visiting the countries of southern Asia and the east coast of Africa, trading and engaging in diplomacy. This story will be dramatically told in African and Chinese art forms.   Shaolin Master Junming Zhao performs the lead role of Zheng He, ably supported by performers of Tucson Sino Martial Arts.  Youth performers from multiple cultures are also featured, including the debut of a new form of the ever-popular Lion Dance.  Drumming, dialog, puppets, colorful scenery, dance, a celebration of maps, all combine to create a dynamic and innovative performance and celebration.  Even the audience will be invited to participate in the final procession, carrying lanterns made before the show.

This drama is a perfect subject for the Autumn Moon Festival.  At this time, Chinese all over the world watch the harvest moon and dream of home.  The ancient mariners would have done the same.  The piece will be staged outdoors, under the autumn moon.

The festival will include lantern-making, calligraphy, and all the usual activities.  A selection of African and Chinese foods, along with traditional moon cakes, will be available for sale.

Tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for students.  Festival begins at 6 PM; performance at 7:30.  Location is 1288 W. River Road, Tucson, 85704.  For information, contact 520-292-6900 or www.tucsonchinese.org.

“Zheng He in the Desert” is made possible in part by a PLACE grant from Tucson Pima Arts Council.  Mid-Autumn Festival is made possible in part by a Festival Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts.

JAGUAR!

A new play by Dawn Costello Sellers

Directed by Eva Tessler

Maya is a young girl who grabs at everything she sees - lizards, fish, and Pygmy owls - but what she really dreams of catching is a JAGUAR! As The Moon struggles to show her the importance of leaving what's wild well enough alone, Macho, a jaguar, roams the Arizona/Mexico border with his pack of playful coati. When Maya's obsession aligns her with biologists driven to find a jaguar at all costs, tempers rise and ambition takes science over an ethical cliff. Maya must look deep within to find a way to protect what's wild without crushing it in her grasp...

The Latina Dance Theater Project is a collaborative ensemble of multidisciplinary artists who explore through performances--physical, musical, and visual--controversial issues impacting the global community. The Latina Dance Theater "Projects" bring different collaborators together to create performance experiences, forming a new aesthetic in dance-theater reflective of the diverse Latin culture of today.

Skinner Releasing Technique (SRT)

No experience is necessary to enjoy this innovative approach to creativity and the healing arts which promotes postural alignment, movement efficiency, and tension reduction. Releasing weaves poetic imagery, music & tactile exercises to integrate the whole self and tap into the creative process for each individual. SRT is for anyone who wants to move in a new and enlivening way, find beauty in self discovery, or remove creative blocks, as well as dance choreographers and improvisers. $100 per 6-week session.

  • Introductory Course runs Tuesdays October 14 - November 18 from 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
  • Ongoing Course runs Saturdays September 20 - October 25 from 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Improvisation Workshop

This class will introduce students to some basic forms, structures, and approaches to dance improvisation. Working with concepts from both Contact Improv and Compositional Improvisation, students will work to attune their attention to and awareness of their own bodies and movements, the other dancers in the space, and the composition of the dance as a whole. Through fun improv games and exploratory structures, students will develop techniques to help them create their own dances from scratch, developing material for choreography as well as for creating fully improvised dance pieces. We'll explore both solo improvisation methods, as well as ways to work together in duets and groups, building skills of sensitivity and kinesthetic communication, and having tons of fun in the process! $50 for 4-week session.

  • Improvisation Workshop runs Fridays October 10 - November 14 from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM

Dance Composition
