Get Ready to Admire…

The Comedy Genius of

O. Henry - IV

September 12-14

William Sydney Porter was born in 1862 in North Carolina. In his early years he tried his hand at several careers - pharmacist, draftsman, bank teller and journalist. In 1895, while working as a bank teller, he was accused of embezzlement. He fled the country but returned to stand trial in 1898.  He was found guilty and sentenced to five years in jail.

It was during his time in jail that he began to write under the pen name O. Henry.  Since he was a convict, he couldn't use his real name and expect to have his stories published.  He was released from jail after serving two years.

From then on, he supported himself and his family by writing his famous short stories.  Although the public adored him, critics at the time were cool to his work.  Readers were pleased by his "O. Henry endings," but the critics found them contrived.

Time has changed the critical view of him.  His narrations are clever and witty, his stories are humorous and his endings never fail to surprise.

"The Comedy Genius of O. Henry" will run for only 3 performances from September 12th to September 14th. Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 and Sunday afternoon at 3:00 (only one matinee).

CAST: Bruce Bieszki, Drew Kallen, Roger Owen and Nell Summers

Admission is only $12.00, with discounts available for seniors and students.

The Comedy Playhouse is located at 3620 N. 1st Avenue at the northeast corner of 1st Avenue and Prince Road.  The Comedy Playhouse has lit, adjacent parking.  "The Comedy Genius of O. Henry" is appropriate for ages eight and up.

The Mystery Genius of

Max Carrados, Blind Detective

September 26th – October 5th

Three Max Carrados mysteries will be presented. Ernest Bramah’s Max Carrados tales appeared alongside Sherlock Holmes in Strand Magazine, in which they had top billing and often outsold Conan Doyle at the time. George Orwell wrote that, “together with those of Conan Doyle, [the] Max Carrados stories are the only detective stories since Poe that are worth re-reading.”

LIVE THEATRE WORKSHOP OFFERS CRASH COURSE IN SHAKESPEARE

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

That most popular theatrical mash-up farce of the late 20th century, “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)” created by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, has received its own upgrade to meet the 21st century in “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [Revised],” now playing at a break-neck pace in weekend performances at Live Theatre Workshop.

Artistically, its goal is still the same: to boil down all 37 of Shakespeare's plays to a script that can be performed in some 90 minutes...plus intermission.

Under the manic direction of Rick Shipman, a trio of actors have been convinced to hurl themselves all about the stage, wear enough silly clothes to fill a Good Will clothing outlet and still maintain the professional qualities of precise timing, choreographic fluidity and amazing physical fitness.

There are even several minutes of sanity when an eloquent speech rises from a cascading detritus of tattered clippings to be delivered straight with no chaser – or chasee.

Patrick Burke is the one who delivers this pause for real Shakespeare, assuring us he could do any of the Bard's finest works if he just had a mind to. This solitary spot of calm mocks a sea of literary chaos that never stops throwing up familiar moments from the revered canon to smack against wacky references of something else entirely.

Joining Burke to pursue Shipman's madcap journey around this particular Maypole of hasty quotes and wrecking ball reactions are Matthew C. Copley and Chris Moseley. All three achieve distinction in their desire to show no restraint whatsoever.

Though I haven't seen the original 25-year-old “(Abridged}” version in a number of years, this new “(Abridged) [Revised]” version seems to have less Shakespeare in it and more fooling around. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

A healthy helping of raunchy humor is in there, too, which would actually be more in keeping with the iconic playwright's own tastes for ribald references.

The bad boys of this abridgment are listed in the program as Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield. Thanks to their pop culture observations, we now get Shakespeare with cell phones, computers and, of course, a rapper who tells the story of Othello in the beats and rhymes of today.

But rest easy, you devotees of keeping William Shakespeare on his academic pedestal. The members of this company are not cynical thespians of ill repute. These actors don't come to bury Shakespeare, but to praise him – with laughter and applause.

"The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [Revised]" continues through Oct. 11 at Live Theatre Workshop, 5317 E. Speedway Blvd. Performances are at 7:30 p.m.

Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays. An additional performance is 7:30 p.m Thursday, Oct. 9.  All tickets are $20, with discounts available. For details and reservations, 520-327-4242, or visit www.livetheatreworkshop.org

St. Francis Theater presents A Midsummer Night's Dream

Subject: A Midsummer Night's Dream at St. Francis Theater

A Midsummer Night's Dream  at St. Francis Theatre Sept 12 through 21

This beloved Shakespearian comedy is a delightful journey into a dazzling world of love, magic and merriment. The play depicts the events surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, the madcap romantic escapades of four young lovers and the bumbling attempts of troupe of inept amateur actors to achieve recognition.  These characters are helped or hindered (or both) by a group of delightfully mischievous fairies from the forest. Considered one of Shakespeare's most inventive plays, the production is all the more intriguing for the updated staging by accomplished director Mike Wilkinson.  This highly entertaining production features local actors Mark Klugheit, Bree Boyd, Bob Evans, Nadia Fike, Robin Carson, Sara Jackson, Andrew Gray, Voyze Harris, Meagan Jones, Alex Greengaard, Sara Rohde, Katie Burke, Colleen Magee-Uhlik, Michaela Ivey, Kindle Vickers, Dave Sewell, and many, terrific talents.  A Midsummer Night's Dream is a brilliantly composed drama that thoroughly amuses while prodding us to examine the nature of love and the significance of our dreams.

A Midsummer Night's Dream will be performed Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3:00 pm on September 12th, 13th, 14th, 19th, 20th and 21st.  St. Francis Theatre is located at 4625 E. River Rd in Tucson (NW corner of River Rd. and Swan Rd). Admission is $12 to $20.

Tickets and more information available at BrownPaperTickets.com (enter "St. Francis Theatre" in the search box) or call 800-838-3006.  Tickets will be sold at the door as available.  Any questions can be emailed to: StFrancisTickets@gmail.com

Auditions: When Actors Fly | Zocalo Magazine - Tucson Arts and Culture

September 6, 2014 |
Diane Schwartz was not one to throw herself into the arms of a man she barely knew. But after a marathon audition session for a community theatre production of Noël Coward’s Private Lives, Diane couldn’t help herself. She had endured reading after reading for the part of Sybil, holding her own opposite a blur of Elyots, Amandas, and Victors. But in the end, when Diane was the last Sybil standing, and the director cheerfully informed her that she was in, she lost it at last. With a whoop of triumph, the normally reserved petite mother of two went airborne.

Despite struggles, money woes, local theater rallies

The last decade hasn’t been kind to Tucson theater.
The recession was marked by lower ticket sales, and the loss of government, corporate and private funds.
Nevertheless, as the 2014-15 season launches — Invisible Theatre’s “A Kid Like Jake,” which opened Wednesday, is the first of a slew of shows over the next few weeks — it’s clear things are getting better. Not great, mind you — theater companies, both community and professional, still struggle to mount shows and sell tickets. But if the number of organizations willing to take on that struggle is any indication, theater is on the way up in the Old Pueblo.

Introducing the STRADA Company | The Range: The Tucson Weekly's Daily Dispatch | Tucson Weekly

BY

[clip]
There are an impressive number of artists—and arts organizations—in Tucson: theaters for performing artists, galleries, dance companies, musicians and orchestras.
But according to Michael Fenlason, who is one of the founding members of the STRADA Company, a new arts venture—or adventure, is a more accurate description from this observer’s point of view—these groups, established or new, tend to work on what Fenlason and his compadres think is an outdated paradigm. That means that they use old-fashioned ideas about how to reach audiences, which, Fenlason says, often leads to potential audience members sinking deeper into the couch at home, and plenty of creative folks without the means to get their work out into the public.

Comic Lauren Wiggins founded FST! for a simple reason: she likes doing stand-up, but was getting tired of rape jokes. As a middle finger to the stand-up world’s open hostility to women, Wiggins set out to create an alternative space where women could take the mic, and only women (on the gender spectrum, not as half of a binary—transwomen and transmen are FST!ers, too) would be invited onto the stage.
Two years later, FST! has featured 44 unique storytellers, hosted 22 shows, and raised over $5,000 for local nonprofits and community organizations. It is independent, all-volunteer, grass-roots, and community-based. It has moved from LoveSmack in the Warehouse Arts District, to (now defunct) Beowulf Alley Downtown, to its present longstanding 4th Avenue venue, The Flycatcher (formerly Plush). There is a website: Fstorytellers.com. I proudly show my affiliation with a bright pink FST! button I wear on my purse, and FST! T-shirts are designed by local artist Donovan White. What I’m trying to say is this: FST! is legit.

"A KID LIKE JAKE" IS STIMULATING THEATRE

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Invisible Theatre opens it's 44th season asking probing questions of social and cultural significance that will have its audience searching for answers. To be sure, when it comes to introducing a new season this veteran company has never taken the easy way out or shied away from controversial subjects.

"A Kid Like Jake” by upstart playwright Daniel Pearle strikes directly at the heart of gender identity, exploring the conflicted feelings of Jake's parents as four-year-old Jake seems to be inordinately fond of acting like the princesses in Walt Disney's fairytale movies – particularly Cinderella and the Little Mermaid.

There is no mention of Barbie or other iconic females, but after all, Jake is only four. So maybe he is gender-precocious. Or is he going to grow up gay? Heaven forbid! Should his parents be concerned, or should they encourage his interest in identifying with the opposite sex?

They certainly don't want to appear prejudiced against the gay community.

Kevin Black as director has cleverly fashioned a production of many layers, with multiple entrances to get at the juicy implications inside. We never see Jake, but he certainly becomes a sympathetic character as we watch his hyperactive parents, Alex (Lori Hunt) and Greg (also Black).

Hunt has the larger role and does most of the worrying over her young son and his clashes with the liberal activist attitudes of Judy (Cynthia Jeffery) the preschool adviser determined to “help” Alex and Greg decide what to do about Jake's “gender-variant” behavior.

Good old-fashioned parents will be forgiven if they get huffy and insist the whole situation is blown out of proportion. They should just leave the kid alone so he can grow through it by himself.

In today's world of well-educated parents highly motivated to make their children successful every time they step out of the house, the world of a four-year-old is extremely competitive. That is Jake's world.

Hunt is brilliant at conveying this jittery insecurity among way-upscale New Yorkers intent on getting their progeny enrolled in exactly the right private school.

Black counters her polished anxiety with his own finely-tuned answers using the latest stratagems of trendy pop psychology – the kind discussed in the most highly regarded professional publications.

We watch as the play opens on these two characters establishing their frustrated personalities. Then Judy is introduced and instantly identified as an educator with her own activist agenda.

Judy is convinced Jake's gender-variant behavior should be encouraged. Clearly, if Jake is interested in becoming a girl then he should become one. Otherwise his true self will be permanently damaged.

Now...that is just the set-up for “A KID LIKE JAKE.” Every audience member will be drawn into the performance from a different angle. There is more at stake here than differences in parenting style.

If Jake really is pre-homosexual, Alex wants to be supportive. But what if he isn't (not that there is anything wrong with that). She believes Judy is interfering, essentially trying to make Jake's decision for him – and by implication, take Jake away from his parents.

Greg isn't so sure about the subterfuge. Most of the time he just wants to come down on the winning side, whichever side that might be.

Every member of the audience will have a different opinion on who is right, and they will all be correct. That is the richness of this production, and of Pearle's play.

The performance is short, 95 minutes without an intermission. This will leave lots of time afterward for vigorous discussion. Make the most of it.

Maria started her performing arts career in Duluth, Minnesota at the age of 11 where she starred in the Chester Park Elementary production of How the West Was REALLY Won! A short number of decades later and look at her now! Rolling Stone just named her one of their 50 Funniest People!

Maria recently recurred as Debris Bardeaux on Netflix’s Arrested Development reboot, for which she was praised as “fantastic” (Entertainment Weekly) a “standout” (TIME) and “perhaps one of the high points of the entire new season” (Black Book Magazine). She also recurred on fX’s critically-praised Louie and Comedy Central’s Kroll Show.

Maria is the creator and star of the direct-to-fans event Maria Bamford: the special special special, which Vulture.com named one of the Top 10 Stand-Up Specials of 2012, and of the cult hit web series The Maria Bamford Show, which screened at the Museum of Art and Design and was described as a “cold blast of brilliance” by The New Yorker.

Maria is the first female comic to have two half-hour Comedy Central Presents specials and starred alongside Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis and Brian Posehn in the Comedy Central series The Comedians of Comedy and Netflix’s Comedians of Comedy: The Movie. She has made numerous late-night appearances, most recently on Conan and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

Maria currently contributes comedic voiceovers for such animations as Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time, PBS’s Emmy-winning series Word Girl, Nickelodeon’s Kung Fu Panda and Legend of Korra, and Fox’s upcoming Golan the Insatiable. She was also a regular voice on Nickelodeon’s CatDog and Back at the Barnyard (in which she reprised the role of Mrs. Beady from the Nick feature Barnyard).

Maria’s writing has been featured in The Onion, GQ and LA Weekly. She can be seen as both herself and her mother in the My Damn Channel web series Ask My Mom. Her latest CD, Ask Me About My New God!, is available on Comedy Central Records.

In terms of showbiz, Maria has made it and is swimming in a gravy boat, filled with scrumptious gravy. She lives with two overweight dogs and a boyfriend in Eagle Rock, California. Go, Las Tiendas de Llantas!
