Collaborating through the Covid Crisis

In this article, artistic director, Marc David Pinate, discusses how the pandemic spurred innovative collaborations that have forever changed the scope and ways we work. From writing workshops and festivals to radical new ways to present performance and connect with audiences, Borderlands Theater's many collaborations are not only sustaining us, but allowing us to thrive.

Like most theatres at the start of the pandemic, Borderlands was forced to cancel what was left of its 19-20 season. The shock of lockdown subsided into the looming realization that it would be a long time before the public returned to the theatre. But as the cliché goes, behind every cloud is a silver lining.

As of the writing of this article Borderlands Theater is involved in eight collaborative with individuals and organizations based in Phoenix, Mesa, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Puerto Rico, San Antonio, and yes a few just across town too.  Here is a quick run-down:

Lunada Virtual Literary Lounge, Our most developed and visible work, this monthly literary series features Latinx poets and performers from all over the world (July featured poets from Ireland and Mexico) with an emphasis on Afro-Latinx artists. The historic Galería de la Raza (celebrating its 50th anniversary this year) in San Francisco co-presents this series splitting costs and production labor straight down the line with us. The curatorial team hails from around the country too.

Writing Home Creative Writing Seminar. Starting this week spoken word phenom, Los Angeles based Yosimar Reyes, a rock star of the poetry world is teaching a virtual creative writing workshop for undocumented and formerly undocumented writers. The four-week course generated 65 applicants for 15 available spaces offered for a sliding scale tuition of $0 - $40.

Tucson Meet Yourself. A pillar of Tucson's festival season known for its almost limitless food, music, and dance performances, Borderlands Theater was tapped by the long-standing festival to oversee the transition of its performance elements to an online digital format. We can't give too many details just yet, but exciting surprises and innovative plans are in the making. We are extremely honored to be trusted with such an important task.

Join the Arizona Action Day and Help #SaveOurStages 🤘

Today is Arizona Action Day · Save Our Stages!

The Save Our Stages Act, a bi-partisan bill from Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), is a $10 billion grant program providing Small Business Administration grants to independent live music venues affected by COVID-19 like The Fox, The Rialto and Hotel Congress. If passed, the bill would provide six months of financial support to keep venues afloat, pay employees, and preserve a critical economic sector of our community.

Today, music venues across the state and hundreds of local artists will be taking to their social media pages and making some noise to help ensure their survival. Won't you join us?

Here's what you can do

1. Share our Facebook post

2. Sign the letter at www.saveourstages.com and tell our senators and representatives here in Arizona to support the Save Our Stages Act and the RESTART Act. Even if you've already signed, please visit the website again and sign the new letter! Now that the Save Our Stages Act has been introduced in Congress in response to our efforts, the letter has been updated to ask our representatives to support this new bill that was created just for us!

Call, Email, Write, Shout!

Join the Arizona Action Day and post on social media TODAY!

Fox Theatre Ghost Light Video

Historic theatres all across the world are empty, but as long as their ghost lights shine, they won't be in the dark. What is a ghost light you ask?

  • A single lamp placed on stage to keep the theatre from being in total darkness.
  • A safety light.
  • A light to ensure good luck by always having the stage illuminated.
  • A low cost way to keep the stage illuminated for the comings and goings of theatre personnel when a show is not being conducted.
  • A light to keep resident ghosts company and happy during long dark nights.
  • A symbol to all that theatre people take care of their own, even when there isn't a show.

See if you can spot The Fox ghost light in the video!

Concert Updates

After days, weeks and months of shuffling calendars, The Fox has finally found dates for all events impacted by temporary closure of the theatre. So go ahead, get excited! Buy tickets and make plans because the curtain is going to rise again! (Limited seating capacities may apply.)

Elephant Scout Films Presents ‘Eddie Mummy: A Love Story’

Elephant Scout Films Presents

'Eddie Mummy: A Love Story'

Eddie Mummy is Unwrapping His Ways of Love For Tucson Arts

Tucson, AZ - Elephant Scout Films, presents 'Eddie Mummy: A Love Story' - An Online Benefit Screening on Friday, August 21st - Monday, August 31st, 2020. Tickets available at https://vimeo.com/ondemand/eddiemummyalovestory.

Elephant Scout Films is proud to present a 10-day online screening event of the romantic comedy 'Eddie Mummy: A Love Story.' Proceeds will benefit various local businesses to stay in operation. Monies will go towards rent and other bills for Groundworks (501c3 non-profit, youth-driven community arts space), Movement Culture (Tucson's Black owned dance & movement studio), and The Screening Room (Tucson's premiere Downtown indie movie theater). Elephant Scout is looking to raise $3000 during the course of this online event.

This Mummy Rom-Com is an Indie Feature revolving around two friends that stumble upon a mummy while rock climbing. They embark on an adventure to help him break his curse by landing him a date with the reincarnation of his true love.

Shot over 12 days at various, awesome, locations around Tucson, including: The Bloc - Out East, Cafe Passe, White Stallion Ranch, The Surly Wench, and R-Bar, 'Eddie Mummy: A Love Story' launched Elephant Scout Films into the storytelling world. An in-person screening was held back in 2016 at the Rialto Theatre to benefit Tucson's Boys and Girls Club where over $1000 was raised.

Considering the times we're in, we can't really go to the movies for a while with theaters, gyms, and venues having to close their doors, so we decided it was time to pick this film off the shelf, dust it off, and re-share it with the community to benefit some local artists & organizations in need.

Director: Christopher Scott has been working in the film industry for over 15 years within various roles around Southern Arizona. He enjoys character-driven stories in both telling and experiencing them. Since launching his directorial debut 'Eddie Mummy: A Love Story', Chris has written, directed, and produced three short films, two web shorts, two features, a podcast, and is currently writing his next feature. Wanting to give back to his hometown, Chris focuses on featuring aspects of the Tucson scene that may otherwise be overlooked.

'Eddie Mummy: A Love Story' - An Online Benefit Screening will be $12 to rent on Vimeo and is available to the public. This 10-day screening will be held August 21st-31st. Tickets available at https://vimeo.com/ondemand/eddiemummyalovestory.

About Elephant Scout Films

Elephant Scout was founded in Tucson, AZ and is a local film production company that has served the community for over 5 years. Rather than bringing a Hollywood veneer to Tucson, we make films for Tucson by Tucson. The movies we make are diverse because we are diverse. By creating a local, profitable film here in town we can win over the Tucson audience to gain trust in the community for indie films built outside of the hulking monopolizing studios. By employing local vendors and talent and writing stories that represent the diverse and inclusive community, we can strengthen our position on the proverbial creative map.
