Haven't been on a date in a while? Same. For the first time in our new theatre, Etcetera presents Tell Me About You, a one person show that takes place on a first date. Ally Tanzillo plays a version of themselves in a show where one audience member said "The character seemed sad." It's a comedy, it's a night out, it's a good time.

 

Tell Me About You is written by, directed by, and starring Ally Tanzillo; a comedic force in the Tucson theatre community. It runs from March 3rd to 11th on Fridays and Saturdays at 10:00pm at Live Theatre Workshop.

ON THE VERGE; OR, THE GEOGRAPHY OF YEARNING

The word is out; audiences are loving Live Theatre Workshop's production of On The Verge!

 

Set in 1888, three female explorers at the top of their game team up to conquer Terra Incognita, the most desired and mysterious of unexplored territories. On this fantastical journey they encounter cannibals, trolls, artifacts, and more as each of their destinies are revealed to them. A study of ambition and the human condition, On The Verge; or, The Geography of Yearning has captivated fantasy and science fiction lovers for over thirty years and its acclaim has only grown.

 

On The Verge is directed by Sabian Trout and stars Lesley Abrams, Lori Hunt, Hannah Turner, and Steve McKee. The show runs February 23rd to March 25th, 2023. Thursdays, Fridays, & Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 3:00pm, with a special Saturday matinee on March 25th at 3:00pm.

Melissa grew up shucking lobsters for all the Maine tourists but soon found the stage was a much less messy business. From ballet to the orchestra, from rock 'n' roll to radio DJ she built a life as a performer. Eventually, she walked into Unscrewed Theater's Basics class and discovered improv theater, where her stage skills grew another 200%. A member of "From the Top," she is excited to join "Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed!"

THE VICTORIOUS TALE OF THREE SISTERS FILLS THE SCOUNDREL & SCAMP STAGE IN "BRONTE"

The fabled Bronte sisters are, from left, Emily (Allison Akmajian), Charlotte (Dawn McMillan) and Anne (Myani Watson) devoted to their books and their independence.

The internet is always at your service, and a thoughtful search is definitely recommended before attending “Bronte,” playing through March 11 at the Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre, just west of North Fourth Avenue off East University Boulevard.

British playwright Polly Teale has put together a challenging amalgam of emotional peaks and valleys to portray the cauldron of deprived home life that inspired the three Bronte sisters to write “Jane Eyre” (Charlotte), “Wuthering Heights” (Emily) and “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall” (Anne).

Though “Tenant” is less well known it is considered the most shocking of all the Brontes' novels. After Anne's death in 1849, sister Charlotte prevented its re-publication in England until 1854.

There is no shortage of obstacles intended to keep women in their place in the private world Teale does present. Playing the sisters are Dawn McMillan (Charlotte), Emily (Allison Akmajian) and Anne (Myani Watson). Other family members are Hunter Hnat as their troubled brother Branwell and Tony Caprile as their stern clergyman father Patrick Bronte.

Cathy and Bertha complete the cast, both played by Elizabeth Falcon.

Bryan Rafael Falcon is director and Elizabeth Falcon doubles as associate director.

All the actors have additional small roles added to their main roles. These character changes are not always clearly made or announced with a switch of costumes. Some of this confusion is intended by the playwright, who wants to show how the sisters' creativity in their novels was fueled out of the limited opportunities at home as well as in their small Yorkshire town's attitude toward both genders in 1840s England.

Unlike the opportunities freely afforded their promising brother, the three female Brontes kept living on a daily diet of frustration as they matured into young women. As girls they had made up their own living room plays packed with imaginary adventures pretending to be world explorers and brave soldiers.

But with maturity came a limit to their choices in the real world. Women who weren't married could only become governesses. That was about it.

Valuing their own independence, this trio of sisters did not seek much employment or popularity. Nor were they successful at looking after other people's children.

Meanwhile their brother Branwell had his own problems living up to all that was expected of him as the young man of the house – which was looked over by their father, a stern clergyman losing his eyesight.

Branwell wasn't strong enough to meet the challenges of college and the competition of other men. He succumbed to the burdens of alcoholism and drugs. However Emily, the most rigid sister, was always willing to help him no matter what.

As their family home was the meager parsonage of a working class congregation, any spark of creativity would have to come from the determined souls of these women themselves. Though quarrelsome at times, they encouraged each other, first submitting their stories using the fictitious names of men.

While their novels have subsequently become pillars of classical literature, at the time of publication their greatest triumph was to break through the barrier that insisted women could never write as well as men.

“Bronte” continues through March 11 with performances Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., Sunday matinees at 2 p.m., in the Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre at the Historic Y, 738 N. Fifth Ave. Running time is 2:30, including a 10-minute intermission. Recommended for ages 15 and older.

The time has come for Improv Madness to return! We are going to have our biggest tournament ever, as we had too many duo teams to be contained in our traditional two weeks of opening rounds.  So we are going to do three weeks of opening rounds and have a finale of 6 teams.  It all starts this weekend with: Teddy Beans last years champions kicking off the show (Frank Monto + Graham Downing), and competitors: McPhibbs (Cristin Phibbs + Lindsay McEldowney), Inanimation (Susan Leonetti and Amy Selegue), I Was Promised Magic (Cristin Phibbs and Amy Selegue), and Whiskers and Feathers (Angie Moline + Linda Ray)!  So make sure you get out and support your first batch of teams.

Alex Danvers one of our Company Members is hosting an improv workshop called Psychology for Character Driven Improv on Sunday, March 5th 11am-1pm! Alex has studied improv at various theaters across the country and has a PhD in Psychology, so this is an awesome mash up of his skills.  If you're interested, please sign up here!

            Next Stage Theatre Southwest, which captivated Tucson audiences last year with David Ives' Venus in Fur and Halley Feiffer's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center of New York City, is pleased to announce auditions for its next production: Neil LaBute's triple-Tony-nominated "reasons to be pretty." Labute, among our foremost contemporary playwrights, brings us two working class couples fractured by disrespect, deceit and the dissolution of their dreams. With "some of the freshest and most illuminating dialogue heard anywhere these days" (New York Times), the play affords a hopelessly romantic drama about the hopelessness of romance. The production will run at the Tucson Temple of Music and Art Cabaret for 12 shows between October 27 and November 12, 2023. Rehearsals will begin September 5. Competitive stipends will be offered.

  • Stephanie: 30s, hair stylist, insecure about her appearance, feisty when provoked, wanting more out of life than she's getting from either her relationship (with Greg) or her work. Capable of tearing a man apart with her words — somebody you don't want to mess with. ALREADY CAST.
  • Greg: 30s, warehouse worker, easily pushed around until he isn't, in a long term relationship with Stephanie until he says one stupid thing. Capable of learning and growing. Underneath it all, a good guy. Maybe the play's moral center.
  • Kent:  30s, warehouse worker, a bully, sleazy/smarmy good looks, the epitome of misogyny, perfectly willing to have an affair with a co-worker while his wife (Carly) is carrying his baby. In the end, maybe not as tough or as slick as he thinks. 
  • Carly: late 20s or early 30s, Kent's wife, pregnant and just starting to show, quite attractive, an unarmed security guard at the warehouse. A woman who loves to dish, especially to Stephanie, and pretty much oblivious to Kent's offensive qualities. Until she's not.

            Auditions will be from 2:00 to 5:00 pm on Saturday March 25 and 7:15 to 9:30 pm on Sunday, March 26 in the Conference Room at the Historic Y, 738 N 5th Ave, Tucson, AZ 85705. Auditions will consist primarily of readings from the script, and sides will be provided to auditioners roughly one week in advance. Short monologues from contemporary works are welcome but not required.
