Tucson: Vail Theatre of the Arts presents GOOD ROCKIN' LIVE!

GOOD ROCKIN’ LIVE!

A Salute to Sun Records

and the Birth of Rock and Roll

Thursday, November 18, 2010

7:00 p.m.

This live concert event brings the early days of Rock and Roll to life! Starring national touring and recording artist Robert Shaw, who portrayed the roles of both Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash in the Chicago cast of Broadway’s smash-hit musical “Million Dollar Quartet”, international Dutch piano sensation Mr. Boogie Woogie, Arizona Blues Hall of Famers Steve Grams, Danny Krieger, and Alex Flores, and Gaslight theatre drummer Jon Westfall, the show tells the tale of how rock was born through the music and the stories of those who lived it.

In 1952 Sun Studios opened up shop in a small storefront in Memphis, setting off a chain of events that would change the course of musical history. In a few short years, this little record company would produce such superstars as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and B.B. King. Now you can help celebrate the birth of Rock and Roll with “Good Rockin’ LIVE!- A Salute To Sun Records!”

Conceived and developed by Robert Shaw, the playlist includes hits like “Great Balls of Fire”, “Folsom Prison Blues”, “That’s All Right, Mama”, “Blue Suede Shoes”, and many more! You’ll even get a taste of what it was like to be in the room on that fateful night of December 4, 1956 when Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash all played together in a jam session that became known as the “Million Dollar Quartet.”
Spread the word, there’s “Good Rockin’ Tonight!” Get your tickets early, this one is sure to sell out quickly!

Tickets are $22 in advance and may be purchased online with a credit card or in the theatre office by cash or check. Please call 879-3925 to make arrangements to purchase in the office. If not sold out, tickets are $27 cash or check at the door on day of show.

Note: The Vail Theatre of the Arts is located on the southeast side of Tucson, 2 miles north of I-10 and 2 miles south of Valencia, about 1/2 mile east of Houghton on Mary Ann Cleveland Way. Turn at the entrance to Empire High School. If you haven’t been to the theatre before, we strongly suggest visiting our location page .

Tucson: Vail Theatre of the Arts presents Jer Coons Jer Coons

Jer Coons

in Concert

Friday, December 3, 2010
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Jer Coons grew up in Vermont, a small rural state that did not have television until 2004 (or internet until 2008 … hoping to get high speed this year). In 2000, at age 11, an impressionable young Jer went to visit his cousins and saw something on their “picture box” that would change his life forever. That of course was the MTV music video for “Bye Bye Bye” from ‘N SYNC’s platinum selling album, “No Strings Attached.”

Was it Justin Timberlake’s piercing brown eyes? Or Lance Bass’ frosted tips? Maybe it was the group’s dazzling dance moves? One thing is for sure, after seeing “Bye Bye Bye,” Jer Coons knew he had to be a musician.

For the next eight years, following his first ‘N SYNC experience (a time now simply referred to as the revelation), Jer went through various phases of self-exploration. For a time he studied Scientology under Tom Cruise (also an ‘N SYNC fan), spent many days contemplating Freud, watched the Jersey shore, learned guitar, dated some girls and eventually found himself with enough songs to record an album in 2009.

That album, Speak, dropped last fall, and you may have heard his song “Legs” when your iPod broke and you had to listen to the radio. It is also possible that you heard it while buying some fresh digs at Hollister or grabbing some fresh produce at various chain supermarkets

Armed with drop dead catchy melodies, boyish good looks and a charm equal to or greater than Paris Hilton, Jer could wear pleated pants from Eddie Bauer and still look good.

Tickets are $15 in advance and may be purchased online at www.vtota.org with a credit card or in the theatre office by cash or check. Please call 879-3925 to make arrangements to purchase in the office.

Tucson: ATCD presents WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG

From: Arizona Theatre Company [mailto:jgrynkewich@arizonatheatre.org]
Sent: Tuesday, November 02, 2010 11:05 AM
Subject: Press Release: Arizona Theatre Company sings the story of our country with WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG

ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY SINGS THE STORY OF OUR COUNTRY WITH WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG

Musical celebrates the unique life and journey of an American icon

Arizona Theatre Company takes us on a journey across America through the legendary songs of Woody Guthrie in the inspirational musical, WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG. This Arizona premiere, directed by Randal Myler, who also brought ATC audiences Hank Williams: Lost Highway, It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues and Love, Janis, WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG plays in Tucson at the Temple of Music and Art from November 27, 2010 through December 18, 2010.  It continues its run in Phoenix at the Herberger Theater Center from December 30, 2010 through January 16, 2011 with a special New Year's Eve performance on December 31, 2010.  The Tucson media sponsors for the 2010-2011 Season are KGUN9, MIX-FM and Tucson Lifestyle.  Arizona Theatre Company's season sponsors are I. Michael and Beth Kasser.

Bound for Glory, Nine Hundred Miles, This Land Is Your Land. We all know them and we've all sung them - songs about the open road, fighting for one's rights, and the beauty of nature.  Now meet the man that brought them all to life.  As he looked for work and his next meal, Woody sang the stories of a whole nation determined to survive the Great Depression.  Featuring a stunning cast of singers, actors and musicians, WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG is about discovering and celebrating one of the great Americans who gave our country its voice and conscience.

"Woody 'lived his songs.' A dust bowl refugee himself, he hopped the freight trains, worked and sang in the migrant camps. He traveled the country, listening and writing and working side-by-side with the people," said Director Randal Myler. "So, like Hank Williams, listeners sense a deep truth and deep honesty in the songs. A timeless honesty."

WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG was conceived and adapted by PETER GLAZER from Woody's songs and writings. Glazer is a professional director and playwright whose plays, adaptations, collaborations and directing projects include Woody Guthrie's American Song (Bay Area Drama Critics award; Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations Off-Broadway; Joseph Jefferson Award winner in Chicago), O'Carolan's Farewell to Music, Michael, Margaret, Pat & Kate, Foe, Measure for Measure, Seven Lears, Mariso, Heart of Spain and Foe. He holds a Ph.D. in performance studies from Northwestern University and is currently department chair and associate professor at U.C. Berkley.

RANDAL MYLER (Director) returns to ATC where he co-wrote and directed Touch the Names; Love, Janis; Hank Williams: Lost Highway and It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues and directed The Immigrant. He was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award in the Outstanding Director category for the New York production of Hank Williams: Lost Highway and was a Tony Award nominee (Best Book of a Musical) for It Ain't Nothin' but the Blues. He has directed at theatres across the country, including The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Denver Center Theatre Company and many others. His writing and directing projects include co-adapting and directing Fire on the Mountain and Back Home Again: A John Denver Holiday Concert and directing Union City (with Rosie Perez) and, most recently, co-conceived (with Dan Wheetman) and directed both Mama Hated Diesels: Songs and Stories of the American Trucker at Denver Center Theatre Company and Low Down Dirty Blues (five Chicago Jeff Award nominations) at Northlight Theatre. In New York, he has also directed at Broadway's Ambassador Theater, The New Victory Theater, Little Shubert Theatre, Dodger Stages, Promenade Theater, Manhattan Ensemble Theater, B.B. King's and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

The cast of WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG includes SALLY MAYES (Woman), who made her Broadway debut in Cy Coleman's Welcome to the Club. On Broadway, Ms. Mayes is perhaps best known for her performance in the Roundabout Theater revival of She Loves Me, for which she earned Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award nominations. LIVE THEATRE WORKSHOP - 5317 E. Speedway | Tucson, AZ 85712

Located on the North side of Speedway between Rosemont and Craycroft

Produced by Special Arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

Adapted for the stage by Joe Mantello, THE SANTALAND DIARIES is based on National Public Radio commentator David Sedaris’ 1992 essay recounting his bizarre experiences working as a Macy’s Elf during the holiday season. Live Theatre Workshop’s production features Christopher Johnson as Crumpet the Elf, the long-suffering victim of vicious children, nasty parents, and manipulative co-workers. Packed with witty, dry insights into crass commercialism, THE SANTALAND DIARIES is a welcome antidote to the schmaltz of the season. SEASON’S GREETINGS TO OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY!!! is Sedaris’ biting satire of a Martha Stewart-like housewife whose annual holiday letter reveals some very disturbing details. This dark-humored one-act features Kristi Loera.

“A delightfully thorny account of working as a Yuletide elf at Macy’s. Priceless observations, both outrageous and subtle. Destined to hold a place in the annals of American humor writing.”

-The New York Times

“A sardonic, merrily subversive tale - just the antidote to bright-eyed joy before too many shopping days have passed.”

-New York Newsday

Auditions for “Inherit The Wind” : Memorize Now!

Bisbee’s Obscure Productions has announced an open call for actors for their upcoming production of Inherit The Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee. Actors will read from the script and are also asked to come prepared to deliver a one- to three-minute memorized monologue, just to prove you can learn a line or two. The monologue could be poetry or prose, just no original work.

Inherit the Wind is an intense, timeless dramatization of the famous Scopes “Monkey Trial” features 21 males in roles ranging from “starter roles” with light line loads to several really terrific men’s roles. Director Rae Jones urges all our area men who have ever thought about being actors to choose this time to “evolve” into it. Though less abundant, there are good women’s roles as well, one age 20ish, one 50ish, and townswomen with a chance for singers to shine on the show’s selection of Old Time Hymns. A boy and a girl, each around age 10, are also needed to fill out the cast.

Auditions will be held at the Central School Project Theater, 43 Howell Ave. in Old Bisbee on Saturday and Sunday, November 13 & 14, beginning at 1:00 each day. Rehearsals will be selected evenings and weekends through performance, TBA when cast. Dress rehearsal and performance dates are scheduled for January 20-30, 2011. A copy of the script is available for reading at the Copper Queen Library.

Bisbee's Obscure Productions is a community theater housed at Central School Project. Bisbee is 90 miles SE of Tucson off Highway 80. Actors may contact BOP at (520) 432-2901 or theaterbisbee@gmail.com for more information and to make arrangements for special audition appointments.

"Anne Frank and Me"
Directed by Michael Kern

Anne Frank and Me
is about the awakening of a modern teen Holocaust denier. Nicole Burns doubts the truth and cares even less, but ultimately comes face-to-face with the hell of the Holocaust, and—in an extraordinary sequence—meets Anne Frank on a cattle car to Auschwitz.
This show has some scenes that are hard for some to watch, and also uses a smoke machine in the production.
