She is innocent and aching to free herself from Turpin's grasp.

JONAS FOGG: The owner of Fogg's sanitarium.

JUDGE TURPIN: A corrupt and lecherous official who hides in the guise of sanctimonious honor.
B2 - F4 (Baritenor). There are passages in "Pretty Women (Part I)" and other songs where TURPIN sings down to an F1. (Can be sung an octave higher, if necessary.)

PIRELLI: A flamboyant Italian with a secret past. A charlatan and rival barber.

Adam is an awkward, overweight English student and part-time art museum guard.  Evelyn is an experienced, beautiful graduate student in art.  After a chance meeting, Evelyn and Adam embark on an intense relationship that causes Adam to go to extraordinary lengths to improve his appearance and character.  The Shape of Things is a startling dissection of cruelty and artistic creation that challenges society’s most deeply entrenched ideas about art, manipulation and love.

According to playwright LaBute, everybody has the ability to be manipulative, to be hateful and deceitful.  

 

The Shape of Things explores the central themes of what is considered art, how far some of us may go for intimacy, and questions psychopathy.  The Shape of Things can make some audience members squirm in their seats for these reasons.  Make no mistake: this is a contemporary play for the socially thoughtful and aware - not for the faint of heart.  

This production includes adult themes and language.

LILY: Hispanic, 40s. She's Aubrey's mom and has been single for some time. She's way too tan and obviously on the prowl. This is the kind of woman who manages a tanning salon and does it with pride. 

AUBREY'S BOYFRIEND: Hispanic, mid 20s, handsome, working-class, tattooed with muscles, and not too bright. The kind of guy who drives a lifted truck. 

TOOTHLESS MAN: Hispanic, 70s, down and out grubby Mexican who sells porno DVDs in the red light district. This is one seedy fella who doesn't miss a chance to make a sale to a 15 -year-old. FLUENT SPANISH SPEAKERS NEEDED.

Tucson, Arizona – Pima Community College performing arts department presents music faculty Raymond T. Ryder in a solo piano recital featuring a selection of works by classic and modern composers who were also concert pianists.  
 
The program includes pieces from J. S. Bach’s “Well-Tempered Clavier,” and two transcriptions by 20th century composers Ottorino Respighi and Béla Bartók. Though best known as a composer, Bartók toured extensively as a concert pianist. Three lushly romantic pieces by Hungarian composer and concert pianist Ernst von Dohnányi called “Ruralia Hungarica” round out the first half of the recital. The second half opens with “Six Preludes, Opus 6,” by the late Robert Muczynski, a Tucson composer-pianist. Muczynski was on the faculty of the University of Arizona as composer-in-residence and chairman of the composition department from the 1960s until his retirement in 1988. This is followed by Chopin’s “Nocturne, Op. 27, No. 1 in C# minor,” and Sergei Prokofiev’s spellbinding “Seventh Piano Sonata,” one of three piano sonatas dubbed war sonatas because Prokofiev composed them during World War II. Like Bartók, Prokofiev is best known as a composer, but also toured extensively as a concert pianist.

Directed by Glen Coffman, The Lion in Winter is presented at Christ Presbyterian Church, 6565 E. The play takes place at Christmas 1183 as Henry II’s family comes together for its annual feast of political maneuvering, sibling rivalry and family dysfunction. As alliances shift, family members attempt to manipulate each other for their own goals, a delightful collision of family, love and politics at Yuletide.

The Lion in Winter Cast:

The Lion in Winter cast features Winding Road Ensemble members Terry Erbe (Henry II), Lesley Abrams (Eleanor of Aquitaine) and Amy Erbe (Alais). Four other strong actors round out the cast: Christopher Johnson (Richard), Steve Wood (Geoffrey), Paul Matlock (John) and Nick Trice (Philip II).

About The Lion in Winter:

James Goldman’s historical play The Lion in Winter depicts the interpersonal relationships among members of the English royal family on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day of the year 1183. The play is set in the castle of King Henry II of England, located in Chinon, in the English-ruled region of France. Goldman’s screenplay adaptation of The Lion in Winter, which was released in 1968, won him an Academy Award.

The Lion in Winter concerns the interpersonal dynamics and political wrangling of King Henry; his wife Eleanor, whom he has kept imprisoned in a tower for the past 10 years; and their three sons, who are vying for the privilege of being named heir to the English throne. Eleanor, who has been let out of prison to celebrate Christmas with her family, favors Richard as heir, while Henry favors John. To complicate matters, the young King Philip II of France has arrived to remind Henry of a treaty he signed many years earlier, promising to marry his heir to Philip’s sister Alais. However, Alais has been Henry’s mistress for the past seven years, and Henry is hesitant to marry her off to any of his sons.

The Lion in Winter explores themes of dysfunctional family, political maneuvering, war and peace, as well as aging, death, inheritance and posterity. As the principal characters plot, scheme, conspire, and counter-plot between each other, the deep-seated emotional ties between them get played out in the political arena, such that sibling rivalry and marital jealousy translate into civil war, treason, and perhaps even murder among the members of a royal nuclear family.

About James Goldman:

A playwright who was fascinated by history, Goldman is best known as the author of the screenplay The Lion in Winter. Goldman was born in Chicago, and earned bachelors and a master’s degree at the University of Chicago before moving on to Columbia University, when his education was interrupted by the Korean War. After serving for two years as a private in the U.S. Army, Goldman decided to become a full-time writer. His first successful play, They Might Be Giants, a satire on the lunacy of life in New York City, was produced in 1961 in London's East End. Goldman's other outstanding success came in 1971 with Follies, a musical by Stephen Sondheim for which he wrote the book. Goldman was known for his love of history; other screenplay credits include the 1971 epic Nicholas and Alexandra, about the last days of Russia's last royal family, and the 1976 drama Robin and Marian, in which Robin Hood and Maid Marian reunite after a separation of 20 years. A novel, Myself as Witness (1980), about England's King John, is considered something of a sequel to The Lion in Winter. For television, he adapted Oliver Twist in 1982 and Anna Karenina in 1985. Goldman died in 1998.

The roles are the following: NOTE- Must be available on the dates listed for each role
 
-      ROSIE (shoots Friday, February 4th) – 27-34 Caucasian. Rosie is obsessed with talk shows and an extremely “glass is half full” type of person. Very positive and supportive friend.

-      CLAIRE (shoots Friday, February 4th) – 27-34 Any Ethnicity. Claire is the polar opposite of Rosie, very direct and is not afraid to speak her mind and point out the negative in anything.

-      HISPANIC MOTHER (shoots Saturday, February 5th) – 30-32, Hispanic. Beautiful single mother who’s 5 year old daughter has a tendency to get in trouble. Very street wise and sweet.

-      GARDENER (shoots either Friday February 4th or Sunday February 6th) 50’s, Hispanic. Happy go lucky gardener who enjoys spreading his wisdom to others.

Audition for the Pinnacle Peak Pistoleros’ Wild West Stunt Show. Auditions will take place Saturday, February 5th, 2011 at Trail Dust Town, 6541 East Tanque Verde Road at 10 a.m. This is for part-time evening employment. Pay is negotiable, based on experience and availability. Auditioners are advised to come see a show (free admission every evening at 7:00 and 8:00 p.m.) and complete a pre-employment application before auditioning. We are looking for the following: Individuals with some background in stage acting (school and/or practical experience), a moderate level of fitness and flexibility and afternoon/evening availability, though we will consider people of all skill and fitness levels. BORDERLANDS THEATER TO PRESENT “OEDIPUS EL REY” BY LUIS ALFARO. FEBRUARY 17-MARCH 6^TH. ZUZI’S THEATER,738 N. 5^TH AVENUE.

A Chicano recast of Sophocles’ masterpiece by McArthur Foundation Fellow Luis Alfaro.  In Alfaro’s reimaging of the Greek tragedy, Oedipus, who’s been raised in a California prison, is carried by “el destino” to an unavoidable appointment down California’s dusty Highway 99 and later into a lonely widow’s bed.  Poetic, brutal and raw, Oedipus el Rey is an electrifying and unforgettable myth for the modern age! Directed by Eva Tessler.

“Oedipus” is part of ANCIENT VOICES, MODERN ECHOES: that includes performances, readings, discussions and films presented by Borderlands Theater in association with The University of Arizona College of Humanities, Spanish and Portuguese, and Classics Department.

Studio Connections and the da Vinci Players present America Hurrah by Jean-Claude van Itallie, at St. Francis Theatre, 4625 E. River Road. Performances are February 4-20.

 

America Hurrah premiered Off-Broadway as a trilogy in 1966, ran 640 performances and was widely hailed as the watershed play of the sixties. It was the first major dramatic expression of the anti-Vietnam war movement, catching theatergoers by surprise. It is a clever, experimental satire of American values and cultural obsessions. The play finds its Tucson revival as an updated double bill (Interview and TV), directed by Robert Encila, who recently collaborated with the legendary playwright on the play’s current version.

AUBREY'S BOYFRIEND: Hispanic, mid 20s, handsome, working-class, tattooed with muscles, and not too bright. The kind of guy who drives a lifted truck.

TOOTHLESS MAN: Hispanic, 70s, down and out grubby Mexican who sells porno DVDs in the red light district.  This is one seedy fella who doesn't miss a chance to make a sale to a 15 -year-old.  FLUENT SPANISH SPEAKERS NEEDED.

JESUS: Hispanic, 40s. As jovial as he is scheming. Think Cheech Marin with a hint of Mexican gangster.
