Kristin Overn is the Founder and Executive Director of the PAGE International Screenwriting Awards, one of the world's top competitions for new screenwriters.  Kristin began her career working as an executive assistant and script reader in the development departments at Davis Entertainment and Bonneville Worldwide, and since that time she has collaborated with and provided script development and consulting services for dozens of writers, directors, producers, and production companies.  She also has extensive experience in film and television production, with credits that include: producing the independent features The Heart Specialist and Academy Boys, line producing and production managing the Bollywood comedy Americanizing Shelley and the festival hits Never Trust a Serial Killer and Across the Line, and serving as US Segment Producer for the BBC Docudrama The Swagman.Kristin is a graduate of Northwestern University, and she is a member of the Producers Guild of America and the Directors Guild of America.

TUCSON IN THE SPOTLIGHT IN ANNUAL DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE

WHAT'S UP, DOCS?

 

 

 

TUCSON, AZ (January 19, 2021) – The University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film & Television in partnership with The Loft Cinema will present a special edition of What's Up, Docs?, the annual showcase of short documentaries made by film and television students. Filmed during the pandemic with strict safety protocols, much of the line-up pays tribute to Tucson and explores topics that are current, newsworthy, poignant, funny, and sublime. The Loft Cinema will stream the fifteen films via their online platform from February 4-17, 2021. Total runtime of the program is approximately 120 minutes, and will be available for viewing for free starting February 4 at loftcinema.org/film/whats-up-docs/.

 

The documentary line-up includes Adia, a profile of UA Women's Basketball Head Coach Adia Barnes who took the team from basement-dwellers to Pac-15 contenders; Solution Number Two, an exploration of the UA operation that drew national attention for its testing of wastewater to identify outbreaks on campus; Be Our Guest, about local refugee support organization Casa Alitas; Tucson, Cinezona, which explores how The Loft Cinema is navigating the pandemic; Asian and American, which digs deep into what it means to be Asian-American today; Butterfly, featuring two Tucson women who find healing and strength in pole dancing; and Pandemic Pets, in which a rescue dog named Bryce Meryl Streep Feldstein provides comfort and sanity for a Tucson family. TFTV Associate Professor Jacob Bricca, ACE leads the Documentary Production class and mentored the students: "I was extremely proud of our students for the work they created this semester," Bricca said. "Many of them were already very involved in the Tucson community through jobs, volunteer activities, and the like, and they used these connections to explore their world in meaningful ways. In many cases the stories they originally wanted to tell turned out to be less interesting than the one they ended up with. In some cases they told deeply personal stories, delving into stories of hardship, loss, transformation, and renewal, and finding out new things about their families and themselves. What is remarkable is how universal these stories are. There is something in this program that everyone in Tucson can relate to."

After losing her hearing, Erin doesn't believe she can fulfill her destiny as the great musician she was born to be. Adam doesn't believe he can carry his race on his back, along with his autism. Together, they help one another find their true voice. A unique play of gentle humor and extraordinary beauty, utilizing American Sign Language and both classical and original music.
 
Breathe Me In features MJ (Jonathan) Barbee as Adam, and Kayleah Wilson as Erin, both making their Winding Road Theater debuts. Sarah Martino as Voice was seen in The Bar Mitzvah of Jesus Goldfarb in our Eight 10s in Tucson online play festival last summer. Piano music is provided by David Craig, with Callie Hutchison on violin. This play features original music by Colin Nossek. Artistic Director Maria Caprile directs, and Ensemble Member China Young serves as Production Manager.

To ensure the safety of our audiences and artists, Breathe Me In was rehearsed via Zoom and will be performed online only.

"THE ORESTEIA" REMINDS US TRUTH AND JUSTICE ARE NOT THE SAME THING

Orestes (Hunter Hnat) and Electra (Bryn Booth) share a fine moment in The Rogue Theatre's streaming of "The Oresteia."

A swooping conclusion grows from a new visit to one of society's oldest problems in the Rogue Theatre's precise production of Ellen McLaughlin's fresh depiction drawn from the classic Greek theater trilogy, “The Oresteia.”

The Rogue is continuing its COVID-19 practice of professionally filming productions using masked actors maintaining social distance performing in costumes to a pre-recorded dialogue soundtrack on the company's stage set. “The Oresteia” is streaming through Jan. 31. Tickets are available online.

Inspired by our own nation's seeming addiction to endlessly sad cycles of revenge and violence in recent years, McLaughlin found within this ancient blend of cunning gods and crafty humans the seed of hope that could prevent civilization from destroying itself in waves of wanton rage.

Not only is it important to know your enemy, she reasons, but also to understand your enemy. Perhaps to the point of being a bit sympathetic. How else can an enduring peace be won if there is no discovery of some mutual feelings on both sides?

“The Oresteia” is essentially a history lesson, so valued for its insight the lesson has also become the oldest known theater work in Western culture. Here we are led through the series of murders that plagued the House of Atreus, where Queen Clytemnestra (Julia Balestracci) is in charge while waiting the return to Athens of her husband King Agamemnon (Aaron Shand) from the army's victorious war against Troy.

As Clytemnestra takes us through these daunting troubles, including the endless housework in such a big place, we learn what she is really waiting for is a chance to murder her husband the king, a deed that she feels is completely justified.

In the mid-2020-teen-years, before Donald Trump's election as President, McLaughlin was commissioned to freely re-fresh this ancient trilogy, also re-shaping it as a singular work for a singular cast, traveling a singular emotional arc without any interruptions. So she did exactly that.

While the Rogue's production does include a pause for intermission, there are no breaks to artificially separate the traditional trilogy's three separate plays – “Agamemnon,” “The Libation Bearers” and “The Eumenides,”

Those who have a deep personal interest in classical Greek theater (you know who you are) will find much to savor in McLaughlin's modernist interpretation. This isn't anything close to Eugene O'Neil's reimagining of the original Greek work in his own “Mourning Becomes Electra,” but some of our more familiar English phrases do slip into the speeches McLaughlin has fashioned.

The playwright also likes to de-mystify the actions of those Greek gods, describing them less as genuine celestial forces and more as the creations of these humans in Athens, first by having the humans believe they know what the gods will do, and then having the humans act as if the gods actually have done those things.

Joseph McGrath as director maintains a kind of formality among the cast members. They aren't portraying specific, downhome people so much as representing larger forces of nature at work in civilization.

Balestracci's presence as Queen Clytemnestra is rock solid. Hunter Hnat as Orestes and Bryn Booth as Cassandra make the final scene their own. Their responsibility is to depict the first realizations of humanity's concept of justice, the hammer that will break the self-destructive cycle of revenge.

Completing the cast with strong performances in this ensemble effort are Nicole Delprete (Cassandra) and Iphigenia (Sol Murgia). Equally historic is the Greek chorus, the very one that gave this theatrical gambit its name.

The group playing the role this time includes Rosanne Couston, Shannon Elias, Lance Guzman, Callie Hutchison, Cynthia Meier and Dennis O'Dell.

As these COVID productions become more like films, the music score becomes more influential. Russell Ronnebaum is the composer and conductor for “The Oresteia.”

Scotty is an alumnus of The Second City Canadian National Touring Company, and taught improv & advanced sketch writing for The Second City NYC. He is currently the Master Teacher & Head of NYC Faculty for ANDTheatre Company in Manhattan.

Scotty created successful improvisational theater programs for companies and schools around the world. His students perform in theater, on television, and in feature films and include an Academy Award winner.

Scotty also directs comedies for the theater. He recently worked with the Emmy award-winning showrunner of M*A*S*H*, Cheers & Frasier. He has performed as an actor Off-Broadway, on television, in feature films, and recently he had a popular series of TV commercials for the New York market.

The location of the space will be right by the Praça da Sé, which is close to the famous Elevator/Elevador that connects the higher and lower sides of the city, and very close to the Escola de Dança (FUNCEB), where the Silvestre Intensive Training has been held for more than two decades. The space will be an open house for the Silvestre Technique family from all over the world.

This will be a permanent home for the Silvestre training community, which will be able to host ongoing classes and training for not only the international students like ourselves but the local youth and children of various backgrounds, with focus on the socially disadvantaged groups.

For the past 28 years, Silvestre Intensives and ongoing classes in Salvador, as well as trainings everywhere in the world have been a great vehicle of cultural exchange, and have brought many benefits to Brazilian and international students alike. The vision of creating the Silvestre Family home is to amplify these positive cycles of discovery, learning and human connection in a dedicated space.
