Tucson: November IFASA Meeting

Subject: [IFASA] November Member Meeting reminder.

There are two more IFASA meetings left this year.

Why would you want to go to a IFASA meeting?

So far we've had speakers lecture on editing, music, speech for the actor, holding auditions, DSLR, News Media, film distribution, marketing, master acting techniques, and much, much more.

There have been prizes and gifts, and folks have gotten gigs, met important new contacts and and been cast right at an IFASA meeting.

All free and open to the public.

Some good reasons? Another great lineup scheduled for this meeting.
The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 6:30 pm at the:

Midtown Ward Six City Offices Main Meeting Room

3202 East 1st Street

Tucson, Arizona

The meetings are FREE and open to the public.

This is also our election meeting, so come ready to vote for your candidates for the board of directors.

More details on speakers to come soon.

DON'T MISS IT.

LIVE THEATRE WORKSHOP - 5317 E. Speedway | Tucson, AZ 85712

Located on the North side of Speedway between Rosemont and Craycroft

Produced by Special Arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

ABOUT THE PLAY

What does a shy Englishman in search of rest do when he visits a fishing lodge in Georgia? In Larry Shue’s hilarious farce, Charlie Baker, a proof reader by day and a boring husband by night, adopts the persona of a foreigner who doesn’t understand English. When others begin to speak freely around him, he not only becomes privy to secrets both dangerous and frivolous, he also discovers an adventurous extrovert within himself.

"I laughed start to finish at one comic surprise after another."

-The New Yorker

"…a constant invitation to relax and laugh at the foolishness of life…"

-Village Voice

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

Larry Shue was the author of THE NERD, which ran successfully on Broadway with a National Tour and many productions overseas. His play WENCESLAS SQUARE was performed Off-Broadway at the New York Shakespeare Festival. WENCESLAS SQUARE is part of "Best Play of 1987-1988," published by Dodd, Mead and Company. He also wrote THE FOREIGNER, which, following a record-breaking run of seven hundred performances at New York’s Astor Place Theatre, was produced successfully internationally. New Orleans born, Kansas-raised, Larry Shue was a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan U. and the Harlequin Dinner Theatre in Washington. He joined Milwaukee Rep in 1977, appearing in a wide variety of productions. He created roles in works by Amlin Gray, Andrew Johns, Tom Cole, himself, and David Mamet, who dedicated the published version of his LAKEBOAT to Mr. Shue and to the play’s first director, John Dillon. Mr. Shue was also the author of GRANDMA DUCK IS DEAD and, as an actor, he assumed the title role in THE FOREIGNER after Anthony Heald and originated the role of the Rev. Dr. Crisparkle in the New York Shakespeare Festival’s THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD at the Delacorte Theatre. All of Larry’s plays have been published by Dramatists Play Service and Shuebiz, a compilation of Larry’s work, inaugurated the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre’s Cabaret. He was killed in a plane accident in 1985.

Tucson: Casting Call, UofA Student short, "Mirage"

From: Bijon Luke Bakhshi-Zadeh [mailto:bakhshiz@email.arizona.edu]
Sent: Friday, October 28, 2011 7:10 PM
Subject: Casting Call

Hello,

I'm a film student at the U of A looking for three actors and one leading actress for a short film (10 minutes in running time) titled Mirage, which will serve as a visual pitch for a full feature. Below are the physical and characteristic descriptions of the roles.  If you or someone you know fits the bill for any of the characters, I would love to hear from you.

Principle photography: December 2nd-4th and 9th-11th.

The story is about an attractive young couple enjoying a simple, romantic evening together.  However, everything changes when the lovely young woman reveals that she stood witness to a grisly murder and is now in the witness protection program.  Astonished to discover that everything he thought he knew about his date is a lie, the young man struggles to swallow the startling information and come to terms with the true identity of the woman sitting beside him.

NEED:

  • Skye Holloway - ~25 years old.  The lead character.  Initially flirtatious and entranced by the whimsical romance of a first date with Pierce.  Her demeanor drastically changes when the memory of a horrific event and its aftermath surface in the course of playful conversation.  REQUIREMENTS:  Fair complexion, slender build.  Must be able to emulate a delightful Southern drawl.
  • Pierce DeWitt - 25-30 years old.  The male lead.  A very charming and attractive British man, he sets a seductive mood for Skye and plays the perfect gentleman and host.  Once Skye begins revealing more about who she really is, his attraction to her changes to perplexity and, ultimately, dread.  REQUIREMENTS:  Must stand approximately six feet tall.  Must be able to emulate a flawless British accent.
  • Stalker - ~Late twenties.  Antagonist.  The ruthless, silent killer of a Man in a flashback sequence as told by Skye to Pierce.  REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically daunting.  Must be able to instill terror and dread without the use of dialogue.
  • Man - ~45-50.  The unfortunate victim of the Stalker.  Requirements: Must be able to convincingly convey excruciating pain of an unimaginable scale.

If you are interested or know someone who may be interested in playing one of these roles, please email your head shot and resume to Bijon Bakhshi at:  bakhshiz@email.arizona.edu

Being a student film, the compensation will be primarily composed of meals, film credits, and some potentially useful contacts. If you are a SAG applicant, I am willing to arrange Student Film paperwork.

This project will be screened at a national film festival in 2012.

Relentlessly cheerful and hopelessly optimistic, Rachel's seemingly perfect life is upended one Christmas Eve when her husband Tom announces he has taken a contract out on her life but is having second thoughts about his decision to do so. Wearing only a nightgown and slippers, she hastily leaves her Connecticut home in a blizzard to escape the fate he planned for her. Originally produced Off-Broadway and eventually adapted into a 2004 film, this richly inventive and often startling dark comedy marked the arrival of an exceptionally imaginative and resourceful young playwright. Filled with bizarre characters and events, the play reflects the fractured life-styles which have become the norm for so many in our tenuous times.

“With RECKLESS…Mr. Lucas has given us a bittersweet Christmas fable for our time. It's a Wonderful Life as it might be reimagined for a bruising contemporary America in which homelessness may be a pervasive spiritual condition rather than a sociological crisis…RECKLESS…has a simple emotional pull akin to that of a Crosby ballad born of the lonely World War II home front, it yanks us through every conceivable absurdist hoop, fracturing narrative, language and characterization on the way to its rending destination.”

-The New York  Times

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

Craig Lucas is the author of MISSING PERSONS, RECKLESS, BLUE WINDOW, THREE POSTCARDS (with composer/lyricist Craig Carnelia), and PRELUDE TO A KISS. With his frequent collaborator, director Norman Rene, he conceived MARRY ME A LITTLE, a bookless musical fashioned from seventeen previously unpublished songs by Stephen Sondheim. The two also worked together on three films: an adaptation of BLUE WINDOW, which premiered on American Playhouse in 1987, "Longtime Companion," and "Prelude to a Kiss." Mr. Lucas has received the George and Elisabeth Marton Award, the L.A. Drama Critics Award, the Drama Logue Award, Guggenheim and Rockefeller grants, the Outer Critics Circle Award, and the Obie Award. THREE POSTCARDS was selected as Best Musical of 1986-1987 by the Burns Mantle Theatre Yearbook and by "Time Magazine" as one of its ten best. "Longtime Companion" received the Audience Award at the 1990 Sundance U.S. Film Festival. PRELUDE TO A KISS received a Tony Nomination for Best Play during the 1989-1990 season. Mr. Lucas has written two opera texts with composer Gerald Busby—BREEDLOVE and ORPHEUS IN LOVE, which was done at Circle Repertory Company. His work has been performed at South Coast Repertory, Playwright’s Horizons, Circle Repertory, The Production Company, Naked Angels, Ensemble Studio Theatre, the Long Wharf, Berkeley Repertory, Steppenwolf, American Repertory Theatre, San Diego's Old Globe, Atlanta's Alliance, and numerous other regional and resident theatres. A cum laude graduate of Boston University where he studied with poets Anne Sexton and George Starbuck, Mr. Lucas is on the Council of the Dramatists Guild. He is an associate member of South Coast Repertory and member of Circle Repertory.

Tucson: November Discount on Comedy Improv at The Studio for Actors

From: The Studio for Actors [mailto:acting-courses@the-studio-for-actors.com]
Sent: Friday, October 28, 2011 7:35 AM
Subject: Announcement: November Discount on Comedy Improv at The Studio for Actors

Taste of Improv Class

The Studio for Actors is offering a "Taste of Improv Class." Here's how it works. Just come on one Wednesday night from 6:30pm-8:00pm for only $30. This class is normally $40, but for the evenings of November 9 or November 23, you can attend for $30 for one class only, and see how much you love studying improv at The Studio.*

So, if you've always wondered (or if you've never wondered) if you would enjoy comedy improv, this is your chance to check it out.

Call (520) 881-2363 to sign up.  To qualify for the discounted price, you must say the words "Taste of Improv Class" when you call.

* Limit one $30 class per person.

Comedy Improvisation

What a wonderful class to get you to think fast, think on your feet, loosen up your body, and how you move.  In this class, you're also taught dialects.  You don't have to be a "funny person" to do really well in this class, to have a fantastic time, and to learn a great deal.  Comedy improv isn't half as hard as it looks when you learn it from a former Saturday Night Live cast member.  Anna gives you the keys: formats, dialects, and structure.  Come play, have a ball, and enjoy discovering how funny you can be.  Also, for acting students, studying comedy improv loosens up the body, helps you think fast on your feet, introduces dialects, and sharpens your timing.

4 consecutive Wednesday nights
6:30pm-8:00pm
Start on any Wednesday (but you must call first to sign up).
$40 per week
(If you have to miss one of them, you just pay for it and then take class 5 free.)

To find out more or to sign up, call Anna Risley at (520) 881-2363.

Also being offered:
Radio/TV Voiceover Seminar
Audition Technique

Each of these classes is taught by Anna Risley at her Studio (The Studio for Actors), located on 6th Street, just off 4th Avenue.  Anna has 30 years of experience in film, television, voiceover, and stage acting.   To check out her resume, please visit The Studio for Actors website , or call her at (520) 881-2363 to sign up.
