UA DEPARTMENT OF SPANISH & PORTUGUESE & SPLITSEED PRODUCTIONS PRESENT:

BINATIONAL ENCUENTRO: FEMALE MIGRATIONS  
OCTOBER 11-19, 2018

This Binational Encuentro creates a space for migrants, artists, activists, organizers, community leaders, scholars and the general public to participate in workshops, contribute to roundtable discussions, and view dynamic performances that address what it means to be a gendered border crosser.  Through the lens of gender and sexuality, artists from Mexico City, Tucson, Phoenix, and Douglas will explore concepts of border, territory, and displacement. Workshops, roundtables, and performances will take place in both Tucson and Douglas, AZ.  

  

Collaborating Artists/Performers: Mexico City: Violeta Luna, Nayla Altamirano, Niña Yhared, Lorena Orozco Quiyono; Tucson: Heather Gray, Sarah Gonzales, Leilani Clark, Natalie Brewster Nguyen, Teré T. Fowler-Chapman, Sadie Shaw, Megan Cox, Adela Licona, Liz Soltero; Phoenix: Michèle Ceballos Michot, Micha Espinosa; Douglas: M. Jenea Sánchez, Alan Harris Rubio, Adriana Harris.

 

BINATIONAL ENCUENTRO WORKSHOPS: These creative workshops become a space of encounter as they explore the fundamental role of imagination in contemporary culture.  Encuentro artists, using a wide range of art practices, will lead participants through concepts of migration, displacement, ethnic trauma, memory and identity.

BINATIONAL ENCUENTRO ROUNDTABLES: Collaborating artists, community leaders, and scholars will engage in dialogue around gendered border politics while encouraging discussions of complex and contradictory issues through a variety of disciplines.

PUBLIC PERFORMANCES: The Binational Encuentro will include two public performances where emerging and established artists will present original performance pieces that include aspects of movement, dance, poetry, sound, and video.
