Desert Voices to host Annual Silent Auction and Cabaret Show

 

Desert Voices, Arizona’s Premier GLBTS Chorus, invites the Tucson Community to join with them on February 7^th at the Historic Y Hall, 300 E. University Blvd., for their Annual Silent Auction and Cabaret Performance – “In the Basement”.

 

Special Guest Stars, Lisa Otey and Diane Van Deurzen will join with Desert Voices for a risqué, slightly bawdy and thoroughly entertaining evening as a lesbian coffee house meets a gay piano bar.  Doors open at 6 pm for this annual musical comedy event and bidding will begin on an excellent assortment of items generously contributed by many local merchants and benefactors. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and spirits, provided by Season Sponsor, Carrabba’s Italian Grill; and Event Sponsor, Barefoot Wine and Bubbly; will help to make this the do not miss event of the season.

 

All proceeds from this year’s only fundraiser will be used to help Desert Voices sustain its mission of uniting our community through our music and continuing to provide a voice for all.  Tickets for this event are still available but very limited. Actor's Gymnasium and Prescott College Tucson Center will host a free
eight-week workshop for actors and directors entitled "Earth, Air, Fire,
Water, Space and Time, a natural and empirical approach to pre-expressive
training and creative presence." The workshop will be held Saturdays from 2
- 4 p.m. at Prescott College Tucson Center, 2233 E. Speedway Blvd. The
workshop will begin January 24th and continue every Saturday through March

Le Petit Carnaval is a French festival featuring Tucson's most sophisticated cultural entertainers gathering at the Fox Theater on Saturday, February 7, 2009 for a special evening of dazzling spectacle. There will be a gathering of indoor and outdoor entertainers, bakeries and vendors. The stage will feature performances by musicians Marianne Dissard with Matt Mitchell and Le Big Band, Le Chat Lunatique and Marvelle. There will also be vaudeville-style performances by Cabaret Bohème. The event begins at 7 pm at the Fox, 17 West Congress. One lane of Congress Street will be closed off in front of the Fox Theatre to make room for the many activities. There will be fire eaters, clowns, buskers and fortune telling. Inside the Fox, local restaurateurs will be serving up baked goods and chocolates. Tucson based Marianne Dissard plays music that is a cross between Southwestern noir and acoustic French pop, and her debut album "L'Entredeux" was produced, composed and performed by Calexico's Joey Burns. Le Chat Lunatique performs music in the style of swing out of Albuquerque. Rock and indie band Marvelle comes from Minneapolis. Tucson's naughty Vaudeville Variety Show, Cabaret Bohème, has been performing to sellout crowds for the past two years. Script Breakdown

This is the foundation course for learning the important building blocks to great performance.  You’ll learn how to break down the script, how to analyze the character, how to play him/her, and most importantly how to mark the script in order to give a really great audition.  Throughout the course, you’ll have two or three auditions, and you’ll be given lots of information and insightful advice about how to handle the important few minutes before each audition.  This course is not just about auditioning - it’s also a great acting class.

Vocal Performance Exploration explores what is takes to capture an
audience on the stage using elements such as reading a lyric, defining
an image, finding your own style, find emotion through vocal
manipulation and heart.

Musical Theater Dance Workshops will be 45 minutes of intense dancing.
Each week a new combination will be learned. Dance disciplines
explored will be tap, jazz, ballet, and character.

Batucaxé is a non-profit drum and dance ensemble and school in Tucson, Arizona. Inspired by the music of Brazil, Batucaxé (pronounced bah-too-cah-SHAY) features the music of many traditions, from Brazil and all over the world. Casting multiple actors/actresses for the first season of a new mini-series. (Six 5-minute episodes.)

Male and female roles available, all between ages 18-35. Race, ethnicity, height, hair color, are not important. What is required is an excitement about working with a team who is responsible for feature-length films (festival-recognized, to boot!), documentaries, music videos & commercials. (Clearly we like variety.)

This series is about singer/songwriter Jonas Moreland, whose career is on an upward trajectory, with no sign of stopping. His fans love him, the critics lavished praise on his debut album, and his follow-up is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. As the band readies for a trip to New York, Jonas ditches the group and vanishes. Apparently, success isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

Shooting will take place around Tucson on weekends between January 31 - February 22 (excluding Valentine's Day).

Comedy Improvisation - What a wonderful class to get you to think fast, think on your feet, loosen up your body, and how you move.  In this class, you're also taught dialects.  You don't have to be a "funny person" to do really well in this class, to have a fantastic time, and to learn a great deal.  Comedy improv isn’t half as hard as it looks when you learn it from a former Saturday Night Live cast member.  Anna gives you the keys: formats, dialects, and structure.  Come play, have a ball, and enjoy discovering how funny you can be.  Also, for acting students, studying comedy improv loosens up the body, helps you think fast on your feet, introduces dialects, and sharpens your timing.

4 consecutive Wednesday nights

Seeking three women for some juicy roles In the Shadow of My Son, a play about post partum depression.  Age 20s - 30s.

Rehearsals begin late February. Currently, three performances are scheduled between April 18 and May 20. (1 in Sierra Vista, 1 in Gilbert, 1 in Tucson), possibly more.  Actors must be available for all three performances.  Stipend will be paid.

Bisbee's Obscure Productions Presents "The Belle of Amherst"

Bisbee's Obscure Productions with Central School Project will present William Luce's "The Belle of Amherst" one weekend only, Friday through Sunday, January 30 through February 1, 2009. "Belle" explores the life of Emily Dickinson, one of America's greatest poets.

Christa Smith embodies Ms. Dickinson from the age of 15, full of hope and plans for fame, until she died at 56, a wry and intuitive recluse. This one-woman show uses liberal excerpts from Dickinson's magical poetry and has Dickinson playing the roles of family members and friends. Dickinson's mysterious mentors and lovers come alive in Christa's portrayals. Julie Harris played the role on Broadway to great acclaim.

The Boston Globe called "Belle," "One of the most singularly beautiful evenings … ever spent in the theater. … a beautiful play."

"The Belle of Amherst" will play Friday and Saturday, January 30 and 31, at 7:30 pm. There will also be a matinee at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 1 at 3:00 pm. Sunday's performance will be interpreted into American Sign Language by talented signers from Cochise College. All shows will be at the Central School Project, 43 Howell Avenue in Old Bisbee. Central School Project is the new home of Bisbee's Obscure Productions.

Christa Smith was last seen as Josie in BOP's production of "My Blue Heaven." She has performed with BOP in roles ranging from Fahim Fakir, the wicked wizard in "Aladdin" to Inspector Craddock in "A Murder is Announced."

Da Vinci Players is holding auditions for the musical, Little Shop of Horrors on Sunday, January 11, and Monday, January 12, from 6 to 8 PM. Callbacks on Tuesday, January 13, at 6 PM. The show is directed by Debbie Runge, with musical direction by David Craig. All roles are open.

 

Please bring a headshot and a resume and prepare to sing a song of your choice. Selection from the musical is acceptable. Accompaniment is provided, or you may bring along your own CD accompaniment.

 

Show dates are April 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, and 19, with a possible extension on the following weekend. No pay, but a quality experience.

There will be no regular general IFASA meeting on the first Monday in January.  Instead we will be hosting a Filmmaker Mixer on Saturday, January 24, followed by the annual Three-Minute Thriller Contest (rescheduled from October).  The mixer will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, tentatively at Auld Dubliner, 800 E University Ave.  The Three-Minute Thriller will be held on The University of Arizona campus (exact location TBD) starting at 7:00 PM.  Both events are open to the public and are great opportunities to meet and connect with local filmmakers.  The mixer is free.  Entry to the Three-Minute Thriller is $5.  The contest will feature a number of short films made by local filmmakers and over a thousand dollars worth of prizes, including an Audience Choice Award.
