ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY ANNOUNCES GENERAL AUDITIONS FOR THE 2009-2010 SEASON

Arizona Theatre Company will hold general season auditions for Equity and non-Equity actors for the 2009-2010 season in Tucson and Phoenix. Phoenix auditions for non-Equity actors will take place on Thursday, June 25 from 11 AM – 3 PM and 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM. Auditions for Phoenix Equity actors will take place on Friday, June 26 from 11 AM – 3 PM and 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM. Phoenix auditions will be held at the Phoenix Theatre (100 E. McDowell Rd). Tucson auditions will take place on Tuesday, June 30. Auditions for Equity actors will be from 11 AM – 3 PM, and auditions for non-Equity actors will be from 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM. Tucson auditions will be held at the Temple of Music and Art, upstairs in the rehearsal hall, 330 S. Scott Avenue in downtown Tucson. Appointments are required to audition. To audition in either city call Jennifer Bazzell at (602) 256-6899 x 8510 or (520) 884-8210 x 8510.

Actors must bring a recent headshot and current resume. Each actor is required to prepare two contrasting monologues totaling no more than four minutes combined. Actors may substitute a song for one of the two pieces, but no musical accompaniment will be provided, and the total length of the audition must not exceed four minutes. A cassette/CD player and piano will be available for those wishing to provide their own accompaniment. No accompanist will be provided should you choose to perform a song. No music director or choreographer will be present at general auditions.

Arizona Theatre Company is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to non-traditional and multi-cultural casting. Artists of color are urged to audition. Callbacks for specific roles in specific productions will be held at later dates throughout the season. All actor materials are kept on file for two years. Consequently, all actors who auditioned during the 2008-2009 season are not required to audition at this time. Non-Equity auditions are limited to actors aged 18 and older.

Desert Screams Productions is now casting for BRING DOWN THE SUN, a violent, darkly funny tale of the decades-long war between vampires and televangelists. Blood, mayhem, and political incorrectness at every turn. (It's pretty insane-- think of the best from Lloyd Kaufman's Troma Films, or John Johnson's SKELETON KEY. It's that level of craziness. Sex, violence, and the unlawful rearrangement of library books. Y'dig?)

We need fearless performers, regardless of previous experience levels in film or other performance media, to take part in the making of BRING DOWN THE SUN. Rehearsals start in mid-July and filming will run through mid-August. It's micro-cinema, so we can't promise much more than gas money and the occasional cheese sammich. But it's a great way to get a foot-- or a fang-- in the door of independent cinema!

The public library is hosting an author talk, reading, and book signing with Gregory Maguire on Wednesday 6/17/09 at 7pm.  He’s to speak on the creation of the Wicked series and I thought fans of musical theatre might be interested (as well as fans of the novels).  I’ve pasted the press release below as well as attaching the release and an author photo.

 

Also, the event is at the Loft (3233 E. Speedway) will be ASL interpreted and Desert Voices will be there to sing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” to introduce Mr. Maguire.

 

Novelist Gregory Maguire, the creator of Wicked, will speak at Pima County Public Library’s annual GLBT author event in June.

Novelist Gregory Maguire, author of the best-selling Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Son of a Witch, and A Lion Among Men will present a talk on the creation of the Wicked series and will read from his books at the annual author presentation of the Pima County Public Library’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Services Committee.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, is the basis for the Tony Award-winning Broadway and international hit musical of the same name. 

This event, which is free and open to the public, will take place on June 17 at The Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the event will be sign interpreted for the hearing-impaired. Mr. Maguire will remain to sign books following the presentation, and his books will be available for sale.  Additionally, here will be a live performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by members of Desert Voices, Tucson's Premier GLBT and Straight Chorus.

Mr. Maguire is also the author of the best-sellers Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Lost, and Mirror Mirror.  Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, a retelling of Cinderella set during the Dutch Golden Age, was made into an ABC movie starring Stockard Channing.   He has also written several children’s novels including The Hamlet Chronicles, a seven-book series that includes Seven Spiders Spinning, Six Haunted Hairdos, Five Alien Elves, Four Stupid Cupids, Three Rotten Eggs, A Couple of April Fools, and One Final Firecracker.

The annual GLBT author event is made possible through generous funding from the Friends of the Pima County Public Library.  Past authors include: Susie Bright, Chastity Bono, Michelangelo Signorile, Patrick Califia, Holocaust scholar David Schneer, writer and advice columnist Dan Savage, Alison Bechdel, Alex Sanchez, and Armistead Maupin.

The Speaking Voice (3 private sessions)

Do you like the sound of your voice?  Did you know that we can change your voice and make it much more pleasing to you and others?

Some of the things that can be adjusted are: tone, modulation, pace, breathing, diction, and just plain understandability.

This is a great course for first finding the problem areas and then correcting them.

Because each person has a very unique combination of facets, this is best accomplished in blocks of private one-on-one sessions.  You could take just one block of three private sessions (each session 1 hour @ $50 per session), booked according to your schedule.  For instance, one session a week for three weeks.  Or you could take as many three-session blocks as you wish.

During the first session, one half hour will be dedicated to an assessment of your voice by my having you read a few pieces.

This course is so valuable for:

• Anyone who wants to greatly improve his/her voice,
• People who give speeches or chair committees,
• People who will be going on job interviews and want to impress, and, of course,
• Actors and/or voice talents who want to improve.

Arizona's Arts Industry Faces Another Hit

 

 

The Arizona Senate passed its budget last night and the effect is potentially devastating to the arts.

 Key components include:

• Sweeping the remaining nearly $15 million from Arizona ArtShare after taking $5 million earlier this year

• Cutting Arizona Commission on the Arts appropriations by more than 70% after cutting $437,000 earlier this year.  That doesn’t even leave enough to match requirements for Federal funding, which would also be lost.

 This vote is beyond unacceptable.   More than 50,000 jobs are at risk as are arts education programs that serve more than 1.7 million of our children, not to mention the loss of critical grant dollars to hundreds of arts and cultural organizations statewide already reeling from the current economy.

It is imperative that we take action NOW.

• Call or email your State Senators and tell them how incredibly disappointed you are with a vote that will wreak havoc on the Arizona Arts Industry and your community.

• Contact your State Representatives and ask them to find the courage to vote NO on the budget.

 We need your help and so does every arts organization in Arizona!

 Tell your Legislators about specific programs in your area and how important they are to your community’s quality of life and economic development. Tell them specifically how the arts have touched you, your family and your neighbors. Ask your Legislators to protect the arts in Arizona!

This is our first edition of Let The Show Begin, a website that will be my way to continue contributing more vitality to Tucson's arts community.

Our website concept began back in February when Bernice Chesi encouraged me to believe there would be life after the Tucson Citizen closed.

Webmaster Bill Dell liked the idea so much he invited us to be part of his website at TucsonStage.com.  Graphic artist  and arts lover Kathy Liddiard volunteered her talents to help design our portion of Bill's website, which she appropriately named Let The Show Begin.

Take a look at our newborn creation, which all of us will nourish and develop. Our goal is to cover more of the arts, in more detail, than I could do at the Citizen.

So please let us know your thoughts and stop by often. We hope all of Tucson's artistic directors and arts presenters will put a notice about our website into their playbills and progams. Do you have a story to tell? Do you enjoy hearing stories? Join us for a
free Storytelling and Theatre workshop and research study!!

A University of Arizona Theatre Education and Outreach Graduate Student is
recruiting local community members to participate in a workshop and research
study consisting of storytelling and theatre activities, culminating in a
public performance. The graduate student is researching how telling and
performing personal stories can empower the research study participants. The
workshop will take place on the University of Arizona campus in the
Directing Studio, Drama Building Room 116.

Participants need to be available for the length of the project. The dates
for
workshop are Wednesday June 17 ? Sunday June 21st, 2009. The specific
times
for the workshop are Wednesday June 17th- Friday June 19th from 6:00 - 9:30
pm, Saturday June 20th from 12:00 pm ? 9pm, and Sunday June 21st from 12:00

(Tucson, AZ-May 29, 2009) Beowulf Alley Theatre’s LNT@the Alley presents Alice Trumbo’s, And Then She Left Me, for your late night live theatre enjoyment.

 

Caleb's girlfriend has left and his only recourse is to engage his friend Sean, a documentary filmmaker, to find out why? Can the mysteries of love and loss be solved in a documentary? Alice Trumbo's social satire on the "my face" generation includes post-show opportunities for the audience to weigh in on Caleb, Anna Lisa and how one wins and loses and love on digital video.

 

Directed by Lydia Borowicz, the play will run on June 5, 6, 12, 13 at 10:00 PM, and June 7 at 7:30 PM. Beowulf Alley Theatre Company, cordially invites the Tucson community to attend our first “OPEN CLASS” evening of improvisations and scene work in progress. This lively event is presented by the first year students of ActingLab@the Alley, our three-year professional training program in Stanislavski’s Ultimate Technique: Physical Action, under the instruction of Philip Bennett, Dean of Adult Education. Come and experience the journey that these talented actors are traveling as the very first in Tucson to receive Stanislavski’s Ultimate Technique!

 

Konstantine Stanislavski, actor, director and theatrical reformer spent forty years searching for the “key” that would unlock an actor’s creative state and give the talented actor the means to approach genius during a live performance on stage.  During his search he discovered many elements of human behavior that facilitated the actors work; however, during the last three years of his life he experimented with a “new” technique based which he called Active Analysis through Physical Actions.  His new training methods unlock the door leading to his greatest achievement.
