THEATER – This is the last weekend, Nov. 5-8, to see "Angels In America" (part one) presented by the DaVinci Players at Studio Connections, 9071 E. Old Spanish Trail. Shows are at 7:30 p.m Thursday through Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday.

This is also the last weekend to catch the historic world premiere debut of Arid Rose Theater and its most excellent production of "Art." We who have seen it are all hoping this brave little west side theater company will have another chance to bring back "Art" for a joyful reprise sometime in the future. See our review on the Theater page and make plans to attend.

Closing out this weekend as well is Live Theatre Workshop's excellent production of the Agatha Christie mystery, “The Unexpected Guest.” Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 5-7, 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8.

Gaslight Theatre opens its Christmas show Thursday, Nov. 5, with shows through Jan. 2. This year the Gaslight gang celebrates the holiday season with "On The Road to the North Pole."

Beowulf Alley Theatre Company will open "Rabbit Hole" by David Lindsay-Abaire on Saturday, Nov. 7 (preview show Friday, Nov. 6).

The Rogue Theatre returns to Edward Albee with a production of "A Delicate Balance," opening Thursday, Nov. 5, with a preview, then opening Saturday, Nov. 7, and continuing through Nov. 29.

Invisible Theatre introduces its production of "Southern Comforts" by Kathleen Clark with a preview Nov. 10, officially opening Nov. 11.

Arizona Theatre Company continues its production of "George Is Dead," written and directed by Elaine May, featuring Marlo Thomas and Don Murray. Read our review on the Theater page.

Chamber Music Plus turns to the Gershwin brothers for inspiration in their Berger Performing Arts production the Sunday afternoon after Thanksgiving.

Tucson, Arizona--Pima Community College performing arts department is pleased to present the PCC Jazz Improv Combos in concert, under the direction of Mike Kuhn. The concert features two jazz combos with a rhythm section, several horns and vocalists playing jazz standards from swing-era to modern. The program includes “Summertime” by George Gershwin, “Little Sunflower” by Freddie Hubbard, “Blue Bossa” by Kenny Dorham and “Corcovado” by Antonio Carlos Jobim. The concert also includes “This Masquerade” as recorded by George Benson, and a Beatles tribute version of “Eleanor Rigby.” Mike Kuhn performs on tenor saxophone and Glen Gross on trumpet.

The PCC Jazz Combos are formed out of the weekly improvisation class. Besides this performance, several combos perform at a variety of additional venues. Each combo also has the opportunity to cut a demonstration CD recording of several music compositions at a professional recording studio.

In addition to instructing jazz ensemble and improvisation classes at PCC, Mike Kuhn plays the jazz saxophone with the Arizona Jazz Orchestra and performs in a variety of venues around the greater Tucson area.

The Jazz Improv Combo concert is open to the public. Tickets are available at the Center for the Arts box office, located on West Campus at 2202 West Anklam Road, Tucson, (just west of downtown and I-10 on St. Mary’s Road, which turns into Anklam Road ). Box office hours are Tuesday-Friday, noon-5 p.m. and one hour prior to performance. The Open Studio for Actors, a new actor training series under the direction of Steve Anderson, announces Open Studio Sessions for Actors. The goal of the open studio is to provide a safe, creative, and empowering atmosphere for actors who wish to explore their potential without a major time or financial commitment. There is no advanced registration for the open studios; actors simply show up and pay for each individual session. Each open studio session will include relaxation, kinesthetic awareness, and various exercises designed to give the actor the tools to layer senses of stillness, focus, place, relationship, character, impulse, and intention-driven action. Actors are encouraged to bring scenes or monologues to work on. Steve Anderson earned his MFA in Acting in 1991 and has been teaching and directing ever since. He has worked with actors from the beginner to the Broadway pro and is consistently regarded as a gifted acting teacher. Tucson: Beowulf Alley Theatre Presents Rabbit Hole, Opens this weekend

Beowulf Alley Presents Rabbit Hole in November

Beowulf Alley Theatre at 11 South 6^th Avenue, Downtown Tucson between Broadway and Congress, presents Rabbit Hole by David Lindsay-Abaire. Sara Falconer makes her directorial debut at Beowulf Alley with this powerful production that earned the 2006 Tony Award for Best New Play and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Tickets are selling briskly and are available online and by phone. The preview performance is on November 6 at 7:30 p.m. The play runs from November 7 through the 22 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for the preview only and are $20 for the run with an online only discount price of $18 at www.beowulfalley.org. The Sunday, November 8 performance will be followed by Dialogues with…, our discussion session with the actors, director and production team. On Thursday, November 12, there will be a benefit performance and post-play reception, hosted by Delectables Restaurant and Catering, for Ben’s Bells Project whose mission is to inspire, educate and motivate each other to realize the impact of intentional kindness and to empower individuals to act according to that awareness, thereby changing our world (www.bensbells.org). Tickets for this evening are $30 with an online only discount price of $28 at www.beowulfalley.org. $10 of every ticket sold will be donated to Ben’s Bells for their meaningful work.

The cast includes Ian Mortensen, Gabe Nagy, Kristina Sloane, Nell Summers, and Marti Van der Voort. The design/production team includes Lydia Borowicz, Joel Charles, Sara Falconer, Bill Galbreath, Hilary Lyons, Dave Sewell, Noah Trimm and Angela Walker.

When asked about why she wanted to direct Rabbit Hole, Falconer said, “I saw Rabbit Hole on a snowy night in February 2006. I left the theatre and was halfway to my hotel before I realized I had forgotten to retrieve my coat. I had been struck to the core with the beautiful honesty and simplicity of the story, and not just because I had recently lost seven close family members. With stunning accuracy, Rabbit Hole illustrates how each of us gets through the day, despite the pain that sears our lives, and how circumstances, mundane as well as extraordinary, enrich and fulfill our humanity. The play is bittersweet; full of despair, tragedy, sadness, yet it is the funny, gentle moments, and the smiles that allow us to keep hoping. We carry on every day, with the fervent hope that someday, somewhere the sadness and pain will end. And without hope, what else is there? I came down with a cold after that night in February, and Rabbit Hole has burned like a fever in my heart ever since.”

Rabbit Hole is produced by special arrangements with Dramatists Play Service and funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Arizona Commission on the Arts, the Tucson Pima Arts Council, the Janet S. Brunel Residuary Trust. This production may be inappropriate for persons under 13 years old.

Old Pueblo Playwrights’ Play-in-a-Day is an annual event with the crazy premise that a half-dozen plays can be written, cast, rehearsed, and performed -- all in less than twenty-four hours. Audience participation, sleep-deprived playwrights, and cash prizes are all part of this fun, two-night festival.

Join us for interactive theater at its most original!

All performances are script-in-hand, staged readings. Old Pueblo Playwrights (OPP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging the creation of new dramatic works by Arizona authors.

HOW IT ALL WORKS:

Friday evening, 7:30 pm -- an evening of Showcase Plays

Enjoy performances of five specially selected short plays, written by OPP members. Watch as twelve playwrights are randomly paired for a night of collaboration. Join fellow audience members in writing a line of dialog and selecting three props -- all of which must then be written into each of the six overnight plays.

Friday night and into the morning --

Each pair of playwrights create a 10-minute play. Scripts are due at dawn.

Saturday morning --

Directors arrive and actors are chosen. They’ll spend all day rehearsing until…

Saturday evening, 7:30 pm -- an evening of World Premiere Plays

Six world-premiere plays appear on the Cabaret stage for the audience’s pleasure and amusement.

Two cash prizes are awarded: An Audience Choice Award is voted on;

plus a Judges’ Award is chosen by a panel of judges from Tucson’s theater community.

The November IFASA meeting will be held this Monday, November 2, at 6:00 PM at The Art Institute of Tucson, 5099 E. Grant Rd. (between Swan and Craycroft on the north side of Grant). The meeting will consist of a tour of The Art Institute and a presentation on what the school has to offer aspiring filmmakers. Come and find out everything the Art Institute has to offer. It will be a very interesting and informative meeting. Everyone is welcome.

Students interested in filmmaking school can pursue a Digital Filmmaking & Video Production degree at The Art Institute of Tucson. The filmmaking school is taught by professional faculty members, some with industry experience. This program, though the filmmaking school, teaches students a range of skills necessary for film production. Filmmaking school attracts individuals who can combine creative, technical, and managerial skills. The filmmaking school program also teaches students video production. Filmmaking school students are taught in the traditional filmmaking areas including cinematography, directing, producing, editing, screenwriting, and sound. While in filmmaking school, students learn hands on, using industry-related technology and equipment. Graduates of this program in filmmaking school are prepared to seek entry-level jobs like video editor, scriptwriter, and assistant director.
