George Bernard Shaw's

Candida

Will Open June 10

On Friday, June 10th, George Bernard Shaw's Candida will open at The Comedy Playhouse. Written in 1898, Candida was one of Shaw's personal favorites.  Candida tells the story of the Reverend James Morell and his wife, Candida.  The Rev. Morell is one of the foremost public speakers of his time and is always in demand as a guest speaker.  Candida has just returned from a month in the country with their two children.  She has also returned with a friend of the family, the young poet, Eugene Marchbanks.  Before the end of the play, Candida is forced to make a choice that will change the rest of her life.  Those familiar with Shaw's work know that he used his plays and his characters as a vehicle to comment on aspects of the human existence.  In Candida, he turns his eye to the subject of marriage and what constitutes a successful union between a husband and a wife.  Needless to say, Shaw's views are unique and surprising.

  Cristin Phibbs and Drew Kallen star as Candida and The Reverend James Morell.  Colin Roberts appears a Eugene Marchbanks.  Also featured are Paul Hammack, Tina Swope and Frank Solis.

  Candida plays from June 10th to July 10^th. (No performances July 1, 2, 3) Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 and Sunday afternoons at 3:00.

  Admission to Candida is $18.00 with discounts available for seniors and students.  The Comedy Playhouse is located at 3620 N. 1^st Avenue at the northeast corner of the intersection of 1^st Avenue and Prince Road.  The Comedy Playhouse has lit, adjacent parking.  Candida is appropriate for ages eight and up.

The Comedy Genius of

Robert Benchley

July 15 to July 23

 "The Comedy Genius of Robert Benchley" will play at The Comedy Playhouse from July 15^th to July 23^rd..  This is the second in "The Comedy Genius of…" series.  Tony Eckstat, Drew Kallen, and Nell Summers are all going to return to present "The Comedy Genius of Robert Benchley." Benchley's Works to be presented include The Tooth, The Whole Tooth, And Nothing But The Tooth, Do Insects Think?, Noting An Increase In Bigamy, and Happy The Home Where Books Are Found.  The first in "The Comedy Genius of…" series played to sold out houses as the audience reveled in the works of Mark Twain.  "The Comedy Genius of Robert Benchley" is only going to run 5 performances, so be sure and make your reservations early.

  As an example of Robert Bechley's humor, when asked short a short biography, he submitted the following:

Robert Charles Benchley, born Isle of Wight, September 15, 1807.

Shipped as cabin boy on the Florence J. Marble, 1815.

Arrested for bigamy and murder in Port Said 1817. Released 1820.

Wrote Tale of Two Cities.

Married Princess Anastasia of Portugal 1831.

Children: Prince Rupprecht and several little girls.

Wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin 1850.

Editor of Godeys Ladies Book 1851-1856.

Began Les Miserables in 1870, finished by Victor Hugo.

Died 1871. Buried in Westminster Abbey.

The Fireside Chats with FDR

July 1 to July 4

On March 12, 1933, Franklin Roosevelt took to the airwaves at the height of the banking crisis to talk to the American people.  His goal was to urge the populace to have faith in the banking system and support his New Deal measures.  This was the first in a series of 30 "Fireside Chats."

The "Fireside Chats" covered topics such as the Declaration of War with Japan, the US economic conditions, the Work Relief Program and the progress of the war.  He used a simple and direct conversational style that connected strongly with the American people.  He continued the "chats" until June 12, 1944.

James Mitchell Gooden has constructed a show based on these "Fireside Chats."  Interwoven with personal anecdotes, he reveals the wit and wisdom of our 32^nd president.  The result is a show filled with history, nostalgia, humor and patriotism, the perfect fair for the 4^th of July weekend.

  The Fireside Chats with FDR with run July 1^st to July 4^th  at The Comedy Playhouse.  Note that an extra matinee has been added on Monday July 4^th .

   Performances will be Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon at 3:00pm.   Admission is $18.00 with discounts available for seniors and students.

The Matinee Show

The Studio for Actors is offering a "Taste of Improv Class." Here's how it works. Just come on one Wednesday night from 6:30pm-8:00pm for only $30. This class is normally $40, but for the evenings of June 6th or June 22nd, you can attend for $30 for one class only, and see how much you love studying improv at The Studio.*

So, if you've always wondered (or if you've never wondered) if you would enjoy comedy improv, this is your chance to check it out.

Comedy Improvisation

What a wonderful class to get you to think fast, think on your feet, loosen up your body, and how you move.  In this class, you're also taught dialects.  You don't have to be a "funny person" to do really well in this class, to have a fantastic time, and to learn a great deal.  Comedy improv isn’t half as hard as it looks when you learn it from a former Saturday Night Live cast member.  Anna gives you the keys: formats, dialects, and structure.  Come play, have a ball, and enjoy discovering how funny you can be.  Also, for acting students, studying comedy improv loosens up the body, helps you think fast on your feet, introduces dialects, and sharpens your timing.

The Art Institute of Tucson is holding a casting call on Friday June 3rd at 3:00 P.M. for various roles in their upcoming Senior Films to be shown at the Arizona Film Festival. These are STUDENT projects and are strictly voluntary with no pay, however snacks will be provided during shooting times. There are 7 films being made and we need a variety of age, race, and gender roles. The films are to be shot sometime in July with availability to be discussed. The call will be for 2 hours or until we run out of hopefuls.

Beowulf Alley Holds Supplemental Auditions For

(Tucson, AZ—May 27, 2011) Beowulf Alley Theatre Company announces supplemental auditions for Tom Stoppard’s Rough Crossing, on Wednesday, June 8^th, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at the Theatre, 11 S. 6^th Avenue, Downtown.

 

Rough Crossing is a delightful 1920s show-biz farce (with musical numbers by Andre Previn). Only two roles remain to be cast and they are both excellent parts for men 40-60.  Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Actors are asked to prepare a short song* (about 1 minute in length). Character descriptions are below.

 

ALEX GAL (GAHL): Middle aged playwright, half of the famous team of Turai and Gal, who are working on their next smash hit, The Cruise of the Dodo. Mr. Gal is quick, witty, and never far from the buffet table (but he need not look overweight or gluttonous).

 

IVOR FISH: Actor, aged 45 to 50. He has been playing the young and handsome rogue hero for going on 30 years.  He still carries a torch for his perennial co-star Natasha Navratilova, though of course, he is married to someone else.

 

The production is directed by Dave Sewell (Arcadia, Wait Until Dark, The Transylvanian Clockworks) and will run September 8^th – October 2^nd. Rehearsals are scheduled to begin late July. Email Dave at dndsewell@cox.net for questions or more information. Note: street parking is free downtown after 5, as is the lot at 6^th Avenue and Broadway (behind the Chicago Store).

 

*Those concerned about singing outside of the shower need not worry. Both roles involve singing in a group: a great voice is not required. The ability to carry a tune in a wheelbarrow would be helpful.
