The Mystery Genius

Of Sherlock Holmes III

Begins March 14^th

  The most famous detective in literature will return to The Comedy Playhouse in The Mystery Genius of Sherlock Holmes III March 14^th through March 22^nd  

 

Willian Gillette.  Gillette was the first to portray Sherlock Holmes on stage.  In fact, Gillette conributed many things to the way we view Sherlock Holmes.  It was Gillette who first wore the deerslayer hat.  He also introduced the famous bent briar pipe. His reason for employing a benr briar pipe instead of a straight pipe was because he claimed he could ennunciate more clearly with a bent pipe.  Another reason may have been that a straight pipe might have concealed too much of his face.  Gillette also made heavy use of the magnifing glass, the violin and a syringe.  All of which contribute to the Holmes lore.

  The Mystery Genius of Sherlock Holmes III consists of an ALL NEW selection of 4 of the original 56 stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle.  Included in this year's presentation is The Five Orange Pips, The Man With The Twisted Lip and The Adventure of The Beryle Coronet.

  Test you sleuthing skills as Bruce Bieszki, Drew Kallen and Lois Lederman bring the famous detective and his partner to life in The Mystery Genius of Sherlock Holmes III.

 

  The Mystery Genius of Sherlock Holmes III runs March 14^th through March 22^nd. Admission is $12, with discounts available.  Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm. (Only ONE Matinee)

The Big Idea

Continues Thru March 9^th

    Richard Howard desperately needs $20, 000.  He decides to write a play to raise the money.  He makes his predicament the subject of his new play.  But when he writes about his situation up to the very present, he has no idea how the story will end.  Watch and laugh as Richard and his friend Elaine Foster work to find The Big Idea that will solve everything!

  Clayton Hamilton and A. E. Thomas collaborated to write The Big Idea.  Clayton Hamilton was a Broadway critic.  He had an idea for a comic adventure and wrote it as a short story.  He then took his story to the playwright A. E. Thomas.  They put their heads together and The Big Idea was born.

  Starring in The Big Idea are Paul Hammack, Denise Blum and Bruce Bieszki.

   Admission to The Big Idea is $18, with discounts available.

  The Big Idea continues through March 9^th.  Performances of The Big Idea are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday afternoons at 3:00pm.

Let's Kill Grampa!

Opens March 27

  Grampa Daggot died five years ago.  The Daggot family never informed Social Security about Grampa's death, and Grampa's Social Security checks just kept coming.  Now, they've discovered that Grampa had a life insurance policy for $250,000.  So….Let's Kill Grampa!

  Tucson playwright, Peré Summers has written another funny play.  Last year, The Comedy Playhouse brought you A Pain in the Aunt.  Peré has a knack of creating quirky family situation that are sure to make you smile. You might even recognize someone you know!

  Let's Kill Grampa! stars Comedy Playhouse favorites Paul Hammack, Nell Summers and Callie Hutchinson.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

 

Anna Ziegler Anna Ziegler’s plays include: PHOTOGRAPH 51, DOV AND ALI, LIFE SCIENCE, VARIATIONS ON A THEME, THE MINOTAUR, AN INCIDENT, SUNLIGHT IN A CAFETERIA, BFF, and NOVEL. Ziegler is also adapting PHOTOGRAPH 51 into a screenplay. She holds commissions from the Sloan Foundation, New Georges and the Virginia Stage Company. She is the winner of the 2010 Douglas T. Ward Playwriting Prize, awarded by Tisch, which is given to an alumnus of the dramatic writing program in celebration of her/his work. A graduate of Yale, she holds an MFA from Tisch.  Anna Ziegler’s poetry has appeared in The Best American Poetry 2003, The Threepenny Review, The Michigan Quarterly Review, Reactions, The Mississippi Review, Arts and Letters, Mid-American Review, Smartish Pace, The Saint Ann’s Review, and other journals.

 

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

 

Sabian Trout (Director) is thoroughly enjoying her eighth season as LTW’s Artistic Director. Previous LTW directing credits include THE SEARCH FOR SIGNS OF INTELLIGENT LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE, REGRETS ONLY, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, MAURITIUS, RECKLESS, THREE VIEWINGS, HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE, TRYING, THE DINNER PARTY, THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG, THE GIN GAME, WHAT THE BUTLER SAW, WIFE BEGINS AT FORTY, SHIRLEY VALENTINE, LOST IN YONKERS, FUNNY MONEY, DANCING AT LUGHNASA, THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO, THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, BELL BOOK AND CANDLE, STEEL MAGNOLIAS, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, BROADWAY BOUND and BABY WITH THE BATHWATER. Sabian has over 30 years of experience as a director, actor, stage manager, producer, and theatre teacher. Matt Brown (Ray) This is Matt’s second appearance on the LTW Mainstage. He recently played the versatile “Man” in HOLIDAY MEMORIES.  Matt began acting onstage as a child in the Seattle area and earned a Bachelor’s in Theatre Arts at Western Washington University, then lived for several years in Los Angeles where he also appeared in numerous movies and television shows. Matt has lived in Tucson for four years and has also worked with Beowulf Alley, Red Barn Theatre, Old Pueblo Playwrights, and Murder Mystery Mayhem. His favorite past roles include ROUGH CROSSING (Dvornichek), FURTHER ADVENTURES OF HEDDA GABLER (Tesman), LYSISTRATA (Pleones), THE UNDERPANTS (Cohen), HAMLET (Polonius), COUGAR! (Peter), TAKING ON MACBETH (AJ Hogan), FUGHEDDABOUDIT (Michael DonLeone), THE FOREIGNER (Owen Musser), OF MICE AND MEN (Whit), SHERLOCK’S LAST CASE (Holmes), and THE CHERRY ORCHARD (Firs).

 

Matthew Copley (Don) recently returned to his hometown of Tucson, AZ and is excited to be treading its dusty boards once again. A graduate of the University of Arizona with a degree in Theatre Education, Matthew feels as though he has worked on and/or behind most of Tucson’s stages. He most recently appeared on the LTW stage in the Etcetera production of PLAYING WITH FIRE, for which he also designed and created the Special FX Makeup. Some of Matthew's additional acting credits include Etcetera's ROMEO AND JULIET, Beowulf Alley's STONES IN HIS POCKETS, Borderlands Theater's THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (ABRIDGED), a.k.a. Theatre's REAL LIVE DEATH, Nathalia Ensemble's HOT L BALTIMORE, METAtheatre’s A MACBETH, and multiple appearances in Borderlands Theater's annual productions of A TUCSON PASTORELA.

 

Lori Hunt (Rosalind) is pleased to return to LTW, having previously played the role of Violet in 2012’s IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE—A RADIO PLAY. Recently she was in Beowulf Alley’s SAVAGE BOND (Evelyn) and Invisible Theatre’s THE LETTERS (Anna). Lori was a 2009 MAC Award nominee for Invisible Theatre’s LEAVING IOWA and a recipient in 2013 for Arizona Onstage Productions’s 5 WOMEN WEARING THE SAME DRESS. Lori spent 9 years at Shadowbox Live in Ohio as a resident sketch comedian/actor/writer/rock singer, appearing in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, CABARET, and TOMMY while there. Lori is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a degree in Theatre and has trained at both the UCB and the Groundlings theatres in Los Angeles. In her spare time Lori likes to work out and eat real food, occasionally at the same time.

 

Steve McKee (Francis) is delighted to return to the LTW Mainstage with this talented cast. Previous LTW productions include SEE HOW THEY RUN, CACTUS FLOWER, BEAU JEST, and THE UNEXPECTED GUEST. Steve recently appeared in The Rogue Theatre’s THE WINTER’S TALE, MOTHER COURAGE, RICHARD III, and MEASURE FOR MEASURE. He has also appeared in Arizona OnStage Productions’ THE FULL MONTY (where he remained fully clothed), SWEENEY TODD, and THE 25^TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE. He has performed at The Gaslight Theatre and been in a number of local independent and student films.

 

Nick Trice (James) is fresh off his run with Winding Road in its critically acclaimed production of CABARET, is thrilled to be back on the LTW Mainstage. Nick received his training in musical theatre & film acting at Broadway Theatre Project in Tampa Bay under Artistic Directors Ben Vereen & Deb McWaters. He was last seen on the LTW Mainstage as William in LOBBY HERO. Amongst his most notable roles are in Winding Road’s CABARET (Cliff Bradshaw), NOW Theatre’s PILLOWMAN (Detective Ariel), and LTW’s THE FOREIGNER (Froggy) and PICNIC (Hal Carter) for which he received a MAC award nomination for Best Actor. He would like to thank his family and friends for their constant support. He would also like to commend this incredible cast, crew, and director for their hard work and dedication on this production.

 

Brian Wees (Maurice) spent his early years honing his skills on the stages of Washington D.C. and New York City, most notably as an original cast member in Joseph Papp’s Off-Broadway production of HAGAR’S CHILDREN. Since moving to Tucson, Brian has appeared in numerous productions including Live Theatre Workshop's CAUGHT IN THE NET, CHAPTER TWO, PICNIC and ALL MY SONS; Quintessential Stage’s A SKULL IN CONNEMARA and THE WEIR; Beowulf Alley’s OF MICE AND MEN; Brachiate’s MACBETH; Borderlands’ GUANTANAMO; The Rouge’s THE DEAD; Arizona Repertory Theatre’s RUM & COKE; Winding Road’s A HUMAN EQUATION; and Invisible Theatre’s CIRCLE MIRROR TRANSFORMATION.

MASTER CLASSES IN ENSEMBLE ACTING AT THE ROGUE THEATRE

For the first time, The Rogue is offering a series of master acting classes. The classes will be facilitated by Rogue resident actor and training coordinator, Matt Bowdren, with members from The Rogue Theatre's Resident Acting Company as guests and participants.

 

 

 

The classes will focus on the same training that the Rogue actors engage in on a weekly basis, training the actor to 

work in a larger ensemble, to engage the imagination to fuel acting choices, and to unlock potential for creating character. 

 

Matt Bowdren holds an M.F.A. in Performance from the University of Georgia and a B.F.A. from the University of Arizona. He teaches as an Adjunct Instructor in Acting at the University of Arizona. At The Rogue, Matt most recently appeared in Arcadia, Measure for Measure, Mistake of the Goddess, after the quake, Richard III, Metamorphosis, Mother Courage, The Night Heron, and Journey to the West.  

 

All levels of acting skill and experience

This is an open casting call for ALL roles! We are seeking actors, ages 17- 60.

There will be a sign-in sheet. You will be seen in the order of your arrival.

Please come prepared with a song. You will be asked to read from a script, and there will be a small dance combination we will ask you to learn.

Fixer Productions, LLC will be holding auditions for actors for the Tucson portion of a feature film shooting in Mexico and Southern Arizona.

 

Title:  600 Miles

 

Producer:  U.S. production company is Fixer Productions LLC, Vicky Westover, producer.

 

Director:  Gabriel Ripstein

 

Description:  600 Miles is a character-based action-drama centering on a naïve young Mexican man smuggling guns from Arizona into Mexico and a close-to-retirement ATF agent who unexpectedly find themselves on the run together.

 

Union: SAG and non-SAG actors are welcome to submit.

 

Submission Procedure: Auditions will be held Saturday, February 8 in Tucson, AZ by appointment only.    You will be contacted for an audition time if the director feels you are right for a role.  There will be no open call.

4.  Kingfisher and More.   The Independent Film Association of Southern Arizona is having their February Valentine's Day Extravaganza Meeting at CoLab (17 East Pennington) on Tuesday February 4 at 7:00PM.  (Going forward -- their meetings will always be on the first Tuesday of every month).  Answer questions about local filmmakers and win: a $200 gift certificate at Kingfisher and a bottle of Veuve Cliquot Champagne and a $50 gift certificate at a Mayfield Florist and a $50 gift certificate at Victoria Secret.  The meetings are free.  The experience is worth -- well, more than that.  

 

5.  Actors for Leverage.  A woman sneaks into her home at 2 AM trying not to wake anyone and is surprised to find her marital bed still made and unoccupied.  She finds her husband in the kitchen with a bottle. He seems convinced that she is having an affair.  But she is adamant  in convincing him (and the audience) that she is in love with him and that she would never stray. Seeking two women and two men from 20's to 40's. The Arizona Rose Theatre Company presents the beloved Neil Simon comedy Barefoot in the Park running February 14th, 15th & 16th .  When newlyweds Paul and Corie set up house in a tiny fifth-floor apartment in Greenwich Village, they quickly discover married life is no paradise.   Adjusting to married life soon becomes complicated by a leaking skylight and their eccentric neighbor Victor Velasco, who must go through their apartment in order to get to his own. When Corie hatches a plot to get Victor together with her mother Ethel, the dinner party goes awry with hilarious results. Barefoot in the Park went on to become iconic playwright Neil Simon's first and longest running theatrical hit when it premiered just over 50 years ago.

Actors should be available for rehearsals: Mon-Thurs 4-6pm, and Sat & Sun. 1-4pm, but will not attend all.

 

Performances begin Feb 20, and end March 2, two weekends:

'A Tincture of Junkyard Folk and Steampunk Jazz'. Professor Gall seeks to uncover the contradictions of an ambiguous and native-less society, 'dreaming the existentialists' dream', while at the same time pleading for individualism, peace, and more fun at funerals.

The Portland, Oregon conglomerate starts with Drew Norman on vocals, guitar, percussion stomp box and banjo, who brings his theatrical experience to the musical stage and is responsible for the initial musical and lyrical embellishments. Drew’s recent side roles include the ‘Husband’ in the stage and movie version of Sally Tomato’s TOY ROOM(Severe Enterprises), a rock opera that won accolades from The Heart of England Film Festival, studio recordings and live shows with Will West, Kory Quinn, Orchestre L’ Pow and the Wanderlust Circus. Scott Johnston heads up the first chair position for the horn section, arranging charts and providing his saxophone alchemy. Rounding out the ensemble isMonte Skillings on trombone, John Stewart(Live Wire, Storm Large), Sean Hudson(Orchestre L’ Pow) on stand-up bass, Don Henson(Sneakin’ Out)and Andrew Alikhanov(Chervona) on clarinet.

Critical acclaim for their first full length CD ‘Intravenous Delusion’ has enabled Professor Gall to become a regional favorite, sharing the stage with semi-national/national acts like The Devil Makes Three, Eric McFadden Trio, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Billy Nayer Show, Vagabond Opera, the Dandy Warhols andSleepytime Gorilla Museum at venues throughout the West Coast as well as festivals and conventions like the Folklife Festival (Seattle,WA), Gearcon (Portland,OR), Teslacon (Madison,WI) and Steamcon( Bellevue, WA)Wild Wild West Steampunk Con (Tucson,AZ). The band released in March of 2010 their sophomore release entitled ‘The Psychology of Booze and Guilt’ to rave reviews. PG’s third release, ‘Magnetic Roots’  came out April 20^th, 2013.

Professor Gall was recently featured by Seattle’s City Arts Magazine as the Portland, Oregon representative of the National Steampunk Movement, along with the Dresden Dolls (Boston), Abney Park (Seattle) and Unwoman(San Francisco).
