Action Alert: City Proposes to Cut TPAC Budget by 75% .. Find Out What You Can Do!

City Proposes to Cut TPAC
Funds by 75 Percent

April 4, 2014

THE SITUATION

The City of Tucson Manager’s draft budget for 2014/15 proposes cutting funding for the arts by 75 percent. These suggested cuts come in the wake of a 45 percent decrease in public sector funding for the arts since 2007.

If the proposed budget is accepted, per capita funding in Tucson and Pima County will total around 20 cents per person, down from the current amount of 64 cents per person. The national average by comparison is $5.44 per capita.

THE IMPACT

  • Less Arts Funding: The proposed cuts would severely compromise TPAC’s ability to support a local arts sector that is striving to bring rich arts programming into our communities.
  • Reduced National Support: TPAC’s ability to continue attracting major funding from national sources to help sustain our arts sector may be jeopardized if TPAC cannot show that sufficient local support for the arts exists.
  • Compromised Services: TPAC’s capacity to feed the development of our cultural community will be weakened, as it is less able to provide the essential services to our arts providers that allow them to stay current and competitive on a national level.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Non-profit arts alone generate $87.7 million in annual revenue for Tucson and Pima County and the combined non-profit and for-profit creative industries create some 9,000 jobs. An important engine of economic growth, the arts depend on public sector support to thrive. Passage of a cut to arts funding in May will diminish the ability of the arts to remain a cornerstone of economic vitality, educational achievement and community identity.

The arts have been pivotal to Downtown Tucson’s redevelopment. As Tucson looks to position itself as a hub of innovation and draw in new industry—as well as grow its tourism—it needs a vibrant arts sector more than ever.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

1) Show Up on April 8th and April 23rd and tell the City Council that you:

  • Reject the City budget proposal
  • Support arts funding for the Tucson Pima Arts Council at $1.00 per capita

Meetings start at 5.30 PM and take place in the Mayor and Council Chambers, City Hall, 255 W. Alameda Street. To confirm dates/times, please visit: http://www.tucsonaz.gov/clerks/mcdocs

2) Write or call your elected officials and tell them:

  • To reject the City budget proposal
  • To support arts funding for TPAC at $1.00 per capita

Please send a copy to each Council Member, the City Manager and the City Clerk's office. (SEE CONTACT LIST BELOW.) We would be grateful if you would also copy TPAC at info@tucsonpimaartscouncil.org or fax 520-624-3001.

3) Tell your friends! Please share this email and like our Facebook page. Help us spread the word.

4) Keep checking our website and/or facebook page for updates.

Backbeat Productions

Presents

Get Back

"A Tribute Concert to the British Invasion"

Monday, April 14th, 2014 at 7pm

At The Gaslight Theatre

More than just the Beatles, Backbeat's production of Get Back takes you back to 1964 with songs by iconic British groups such as the Zombies, The Rolling Stones, Dave Clark Five, and The Who.  Audiences will be amazed by the full sound meticulously recreated by just four musicians.  This show is pure 60s Rock 'n Roll as it was intended to be.

Backbeat has been playing sold out rock and roll shows in Tucson since 2010.  The group features Walker Foard on lead vocals and guitar, Jon Westfall on drums, and Larry Lee Lerma on bass and vocals, and Michael P. Nordberg on guitar and vocals.

Rather than spotlighting one artist, the band focuses on 1960s hits from numerous artist.  The show spans the entire era. Audience members who remember the 1960s are likely to recognize many familiar songs during the show.  Backbeat performs a wide array of hits that sound just like the record.  Those authentic sights and sounds allow those who were there in the '60s to relive one of the most prolific times in music history.

Younger members of the audience will also get a chance to experience the past.  Younger concertgoers get a fun and exciting glimpse of what it was like back then.  There really is something in it for everyone.

Show tickets are $19.95 plus tax available by phone at 520-886-9428

Action Alert: TPAC Faces 75% Cut in Funding

From: info@tucsonpimaartscouncil.org
Sent: Tuesday, April 1, 2014 1:00 PM
Subject: Extra Extra! City Proposes 75% Arts Cuts

Late-Breaking TPAC News...

TPAC Faces 75% Cut in Funding
The City Manager's first draft budget presented to Mayor and Council last Tuesday proposes $100,000 in funding for TPAC for the coming fiscal year, a 75% cut from the current year. (These suggested cuts already follow a 32% decrease per capita in local public sector arts funding since 2007.) If the proposed budget is approved, per capita funding in Tucson and Pima County will not even total 1% of that devoted by most American cities and counties to the arts.

We'll be asking everyone who believes that the arts are integral to Southern Arizona's identity and well-being to speak up on their behalf. Stayed tuned!

Casting Call, UA Student short

Actors wanted to appear in short film

Reply to: wgvhx-4400194641@gigs.craigslist.org

Hi, I am a student at the University of Arizona looking for volunteer actors to be in a short film. Unfortunately we are unable to offer pay but we will provide pizza and coke on set, a DVD copy of the film, and if the film does end up making any money you will get a percentage of the earnings. We are looking to start shooting as soon as possible so please respond if you are available weekends in April and May.

We are looking for
1. Female lead, Lenora (35-40 years of age)
2. Male lead Easton (60-70)
3. Female to play Lenora in a flashback (12-14 years)
4. Lenora's mother in the flashback (30-40)
5. Lenora's father in the flashback (30-40)
6. Easton as a younger man (20-25)
7. Young Easton's girlfriend (20-25)
8. Four extras who may have a couple lines (20-40)

The finished film will be about 15 minutes long and is based on a true story about a woman who tracked down the man who killed her father in WWII.

We will have some flexibility as far as locations go so you will not have to drive too far. Most parts are small and will not take more than a single day of shooting.

Please let me know if you are interested and committed. Please send a headshot with your response. I look forward to working with you!
