Abby pleads with an orderly, "If I have to have someone in here, why can't it be someone quiet? What about that woman without the voicebox? She seems nice." "LITTLE FOXES" CARRIES PONDER-FUL MESSAGE FOR TODAY

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

"The Little Foxes" reminds us it was a man's world in Alabama as the 20th century began.

There is much to ponder in the Winding Road Theater Ensemble's ambitious production of Lillian Hellman's “The Little Foxes.” Mostly because much change has disrupted American society since the play first appeared on Broadway in 1939.

Slipping further back in time, “The Little Foxes” is set in an upscale Alabama mansion in 1900. Cotton was still king back then and the Hubbard brothers planned on turning their smallish fortunes into massive wealth.

All they had to do was give $225,000 to a certain Chicago industrialist who would have a northern-type cotton mill built right nex to the brothers' own Alabama cotton fields.

And to do that, Benjamin Hubbard (David Alexander Johnston) and Oscar Hubbard (Dave Davidson) just needed to get their sister Regina Giddens (Cynthia Jeffery) to chip in a third of the money as an equal partner.

Only...it was 1900 and Regina didn't have any of her own money. That belonged to her husband, Horace Giddens (Eric Rau). Which is exactly where your after-show pondering will begin. Hellman was always up for expressing her liberal feminist activist views in public.

Though the play's more formal dialogue and structure can make the proceedings on stage feel stiff at times, Glen Coffman as director still gives a good squeeze to all the big juicy scenes.

Jeffrey delivers an epic performance as a clever woman whose moxie could match Scarlet O'Hara when it comes to getting what she wants in a man's world. Much of the cleverness takes place in power shifting confrontations as first Regina, then Benjamin, then Oscar, then Regina again have the upper hand.

Playing out those round-robin bouts becomes a mental slugfest of ensemble acting, four quality players going toe-to-toe-to-toe-to-toe.

More layers of social commentary are found in the secondary roles. Each of them gets at least one spotlight scene and each makes the most of the moment.

Heartbreaking is Denise Blum as Birdie, over-medicating herself with alcohol. She only wants to live a gracious Southern life, but instead feels surrounded by very unyielding men of rapacious greed.

Playing young Leo Hubbard, the son of Birdie and Oscar, is Damian Garicia hitting an amusing note of spoiled dufus ineptitude.

Getting the dramatic closing scene to herself and bringing hope into the future is Morgan H. Smith as Regina's daughter Alexandra.

Ominous in their silence were the Hubbard household's two servants, scarcely more than a generation removed from being slaves themselves – Addie (Gianbari “Debora” Deebom) and Cal (Richard “Chomps” Thompson),

Plan on having thoughtful discussions about gender, race and greed after the curtain falls. “The Little Foxes” may be 80 years old, but it feels so current. After all, customs and culture may be changing, but through the centuries human nature has always stayed the same.

“The Little Foxes” runs through Sept. 15 with performances at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays, at the Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre, in the Historic Y, 738 N. Fifth Ave.  For details and reservations, 520-401-3626, or visit windingroadtheater.org

THERE'S AWESOME ACTING IN "HEISENBERG"

By Chuck Graham, TucsonStage.com

Roberto Guajardo and Dallas Thomas accidentally discover compatibility after meeting in a London train station.

Do you really believe that inside each of us is a little round bomb of pure joy just waiting for the right time to explode with unrestrained happiness? All it takes to ignite is meeting the right person at the right time in the right place.

Whether or not that is actually true, we love to think it might be. That even if life feels full of sadness today, everything could change in the wink of an eye – especially if that wink is directed at you by someone particularly attractive.

This is the magic promised in the ominous-sounding “Heisenberg” by Simon Stephens, a disarmingly charming two-person play said to apply the famous scientist's Uncertainty Principle to random human relationships.

Maybe it does, who knows? We never hear him referenced in the play itself.

What we know for sure is Dallas Thomas' performance is pure delight, filled with so many eccentric mannerisms and illogical explanations you love her for being so wacko!

For Thomas – who through the years hasn't been on stage nearly enough – this is a break-out role of headliner proportions. She plays Georgie, kind of a second generation 43-year-old hippie American who married an Englishman and lives in London.

Later on we learn her husband passed away somewhat recently. By the same token, no buttoned-up Londoner would be bouncing around the city with Georgie's high-pressure froth of excessive intensity.

She also seems to have a full-blown case of Asperger syndrome, with ideas flying unfiltered straight from her brain to her mouth in aggressive speech patterns of staccato intensity.

If that sounds terminally annoying...yes, it is. But within this performance there is an equal amount of caring that makes her effusive behavior feel genuine.

Playing opposite Georgie is Roberto Guajardo as 75-year-old Alex, a bonafide British butcher and confirmed bchelor who spent most of those years sitting on the sidelines of his own life.

Sabian Trout the director created between these two mismatched personalities a beautifully balanced mating dance of trust. The performance I attended was complimented with a standing ovation.

There isn't a plot so much as there is a string of combustible reactions that progress through seven scenes performed with no intermission. Georgie is, of course, the volatile component. She explodes (so to speak) upon first contact with Alex, changing him from inert matter to being a buzzy someone feeling rather confused.

As these fizzy bits of interacting behavior continue, he slowly transforms from confusion to guarded wariness to downright helpless curiousity. That's when Georgie cleverly sets the hook and begins to reel in her catch. But landing him is another matter.

“Heisenberg” continues through Sept. 30 with performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, 3 p.m.  Sundays, at Live Theatre Workshop, 5317 E. Speedway Blvd. Tickets are $15 Thursdays; $20 all other performances, with discounts available. For further details and reservations, 520-327-4242, or visit livetheatreworkshop.org

Theatre studio space available to rent

From: Troubadour Theatre <troubadourtheatre@yahoo.com>
Sent: Tuesday, September 3, 2019 10:41 PM
Subject: Theatre studio space available to rent

Troubadour Theatre is looking for another company/individual interested in renting our studio theatre space when not in use.  Ideally looking for a long term renter to share the space with us.  We are an educational youth theatre company, and use our studio for classes and class recitals/small class performances, and have a lot of availability for potential renters to use the space outside of our weekly class schedule.  Generally available all evenings after 6pm, and during the day outside of our class times.

Our studio space is 1000 sq ft, with seating for about 40 with folding chairs.  Can be used for play rehearsals with small casts, vocal lessons, instrument lessons, band practice, etc.  Can also be used for small, intimate performances or recitals, we have stage lights and a basic light board, and sound system.  The room has a small stage 16'x8' (that's why I say appropriate for small casts.)  Backstage area on one side behind curtain with small room that can be used as private dressing room.  We also have a classroom area with tables and a chalkboard that would be good for anyone looking for a space for teaching crafting or art classes.  Cooled with central AC.

Our standard rate is $20 for the first hour and $10 for each additional hour.  We can offer discounts on that for anyone looking to rent regularly ongoing.   We could work out a great deal for a monthly rate for anyone interested in using the space regularly.

We are located on Grant just east of Country Club.  You can see photos of the space for rent here: https://www.troubadourtheatre.com/rent-theatre (Pictures taken when we moved into the new space, backstage masking curtain wasn't installed yet.)

If interested, contact Kristen Wheeler at troubadourtheatre@yahoo.com or 602-790-6876 (call or text is ok.)

SAPAC presents [title of show]

From: Dennis Tamblyn <dennis@sapactucson.org>
Sent: Monday, September 2, 2019 11:42 AM
Subject: Press release for [title of show]

Presents

Music and Lyrics by Jeff Bowen

Book by Hunter Bell

September 13th - 22nd

Starring:  Robin Bousel, Mara Capati, Andy Miller and Tyler Wright

Directed by Carson Wright

The Southern Arizona Performing Arts Company (SAPAC), a new nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing musical theater to the Tucson area, is pleased to announce [title of show], the first production in its inaugural 2019-2020 season.

This Tony Award-nominated musical was an instant hit (having also won an Obie Award during its Off-Broadway run). Now receiving its first professional production in the Tucson area, [title of show] chronicles the adventures of Jeff and Hunter, two struggling writers scrambling to write a musical to submit to the New York Musical Theatre Festival. With the deadline looming, and with nothing to lose, the pair enlists the help of their friends Susan and Heidi (with Larry on the piano), and decide to try and create something exciting and new. What you get is four friends writing a musical about four friends writing a musical:  meta-theatre at its most hilarious!

With music and lyrics by Jeff Bowen and book by Hunter Bell, [title of show] charmed audiences and critics alike:  "Have I got a show for you! A zesty, sweet, Broadway-trivia-riddled musical, [title of show] is at heart a postmodern homage to the grand tradition of backstage musicals like Babes in Arms, Kiss Me, Kate and A Chorus Line." – New York Times

SAPAC's production of [title of show] plays September 13 – 22, 2019 at The Cabaret Space, Temple of Music and Art – 330 S. Scott Ave.  Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, with 2:00 p.m. matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets ($20-$25) can be purchased online at sapactucson.tix.com or by calling 520-261-9309.
