Facebook's best new comedy series has a new episode this Friday!

Unscrewed Theater's very own Dawn McMillan welcomes Luana Proença to make some stuff up online!

Luana Proença is a Brazilian artist who graduated with a degree in Acting from the University of Brasília and a specialization in Cultural Management (SENAC), and a Master's in Arts from the Federal University of Uberlândia with research focused on training in Improv.

She had her own Theater School and Producer in Brazil between 2008 to 2016 and was a college teacher of Direction and Acting from 2014 to 2017. She is a member of the Brazilian groups Novos Candangos and Saída Sul, with which she created her solo show "Aleatório."

Luana studied at The Second City Training Center Hollywood in addition to individual courses in the United States, Europe, and Brazil from 2011 to 2018. . She is one of the members of the Feminist Pedagogical Laboratory La Otra Esceña, with which she wrote, together with 11 other women improvisers, the book "Have you ever wondered if…? Questions for Teaching Improv" (2020).

This Saturday, we welcome Bill Chott.

From St. Louis, Missouri, Bill is an alumnus of Chicago's Second City, where he toured the country with the traveling Second City troupe in the 90s.

Although he's known for his comedic work with the Farrelly Bros. and his characters on the cult hit The Dana Carvey Show, he gained much recognition for his small but powerful role as "The Mailman" in This Is Us.

Also a musical comedy performer, he appeared in I Love Lucy Live on Stage, the musical in which he played an award-winning role as Fred Mertz. He's also the official Fred Mertz of Jamestown, NY, home of the National Comedy Center.

GHOST STORIES FROM PUB DREAMS ENCOURAGE HOPE IN RURAL IRELAND

Beguiling in its sincerity, disarming in its simplicity, the Rogue Theatre's subtle production of playwright Conor McPherson's portrait of Irish country life, “The Weir,” will connect with you on the drive home afterward.

Christopher Johnson as director makes the bold decision to trust the playwright's instincts rather than give the dialogue a more modern pacing and interpretation. First produced in 1997, “The Weir” is set in a community so isolated from progress, electric service has only just reached the village during fairly recent times.

In the play, a weir is described as a hydroelectric dam, presumably the one that brought night life and the outside world of radio programs to this little neighborhood pub where the play takes place, as three villagers, the bar man and a special guest gather to escape the stormy weather outside.

Amicably serving those rounds of draft beer and shots of whiskey is Brendan (Hunter Hnat), the youngest of the lot. Jack (Joseph McGrath), older and rougher, who owns the local car garage, and Jim (Aaron Shand), who works for Jack, are regular patrons.

Set to arrive a little later are Finbar (Christopher Younggren), a businessman and local who considers himself far superior to the other locals, and Valerie (Carley Elizabeth Preston), a single lass recently moved from Dublin. Finbar also considers himself Valerie's escort.

Before the evening is over, each of these four will be telling a haunting story or two from their own lives. But these tales are nothing like today's popular grotesqueries gorged with bulging eyes and popping blue veins.

These are ghost stories told acoustically, unplugged from any special effects, where the unexpected sounds of sharp rapping on a wall across the room can strike fear into a person's heart. Or the distant helplessness of a small child's voice coming across a crackling telephone line could be coming from beyond the grave.

To McPherson, these basic mysteries are an essential part of life. As necessary as oxygen itself. Without the mysteries, there would be no chance for happiness to stick its nose under the tent, crawling in to triumph over the sadness and loneliness that defines most of their days.

Instead of using conflict to create the energy that drives the action, McPherson uses hope. And Johnson as director catches that note in each of the actors to create a beautifully effective ensemble performance.

"The Weir” continues through March 14 with masked and socially distanced stage performances as well as a professionally produced, ticketed video version that can be viewed anytime through March 14.

Here at Unscrewed Theater, we have the absolute highest of hopes that the rest of months will soon be available to us - along with the ability to enjoy each other's company live and in person.

And to that end, we will continue to do our dead-level best to keep you entertained and laughing from the comfort and safety of your own home. In any kind of attire you see fit. Enjoy those daytime PJ's while you can, folks, because yes, when we finally throw those theater doors wide open, you will have to get dressed out of the other side of your closet. We will, too. Promise.

This Romeo and Juliet story is set in the pecan groves of Southern Arizona. As school principal Amalia writes her memoir, she peels away the layers of the onion of her own heart as she struggles to define her responsibility to her community, her undocumented field workers, and to her heritage, as well has her complicity in tragedy.

 

Winding Road is thrilled to be a founding theater of Romerofest, a month-long celebration of the works of local playwright Elaine Romero. In the month of March, fifteen theaters, located throughout the United States and Mexico, are mounting productions or readings of one of Ms. Romero's scripts.

Our contribution, a live reading of her borderland romance Wetback, will play one night only, streaming live on March 15th, at 7:00p (MST). Tickets are $10.

 

This production of Wetback is a collaboration between Winding Road Theater Ensemble and Arizona Theatre Company, directed by ATC's Artistic Director, Sean Daniels. The long-term development of Wetback occurred at Voice & Vision Envision Retreat, Arkansas Repertory Theatre, Cal State Dominguez Hills (LA), Chicago Dramatists, Arizona Theatre Company, and in New York at Urban Stages, Queens Theatre in the Park, Dramatic Question Theatre, and the Lark New Play Development Center. The play was developed in Chicago and NY by Jacob Padrón.
