TFTV presents WHAT'S UP, DOCS, annual screening of outstanding short documentaries made by Film & Television students

TUCSON, AZ (December 6, 2021) - The University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film & Television (TFTV) presents the 2021 edition of What's Up, Docs, the annual showcase of short documentaries made by film and television students. Featuring twelve films that are current, newsworthy, poignant, funny, and sublime, the free screening will take place at The Loft Cinema on December 14, 2021 at 7pm, and simultaneously online on TFTV's YouTube channel. This marks the first showcase of films made by TFTV students following the School's recent ascent in The Wrap's annual Top 50 Film School rankings.

 

Some of the films in the lineup include:

• Wonderful Worms, showcasing Tucson's worm fanatics as they pursue the perfect compost, and featuring outstanding animation from the UA School of Art
• Something to Fear follows the journey of top basketball recruit Kennedy Brown as she battles the forces against her–as well as her own demons–as she makes her way to the top
• The Dunbar Effect reveals two generations of educators looking to preserve the history of one of Tucson's formerly all-black schools
• The Piccolo Trombone follows student Zack Richardson on his comedic quest to understand where this curious instrument came from and why anyone would use it
• Double Standard looks at the glaringly different codes of conduct applied by male fraternities vs. female sororities on the UA campus and across the country
• The Sound brings the audience inside the studio of local songwriter Sophia Rankin as she brings a captivating new song to life.

TFTV Associate Professor Jacob Bricca, ACE leads the Documentary Production class and mentored the students: "The dedication shown by this year's Documentary Production students has been really exceptional. They have explored the genius of the earthworm to problematic recruiting policies of national sororities, and everything in between.  What's more, they did this with incredible creativity and passion. I can't wait for the public to see these films."

 

The in-person screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers moderated by Loft Cinema Program Director Jeff Yanc. Space is limited. Total runtime of the program is approximately 120 minutes. Attendees should review The Loft Cinema's safety protocols before arriving to the event.

 

What's Up, Docs? is part of the inaugural Arizona Signature Series by Arizona Arts, a curation of some of the division's most engaging fall programs.

 

 

 

 

The School of Theatre, Film & Television, a member of the Arizona Arts division at the University of Arizona, nurtures and develops outstanding artists and scholars via rigorous training and mentoring by internationally recognized faculty, high-level internship opportunities, industry-standard resources, and hands-on production experience. Tickets and passes for the 10^th Tucson Fringe Festival are available now. The festival takes place on January 13-16, 2022. We have live entertainment, Zoom entertainment, and pre-recorded videos on YouTube. 
 
We are using a new ticketing system which we hope will make your experience with purchasing tickets a lot easier. We appreciate any feedback you have about your experience. This holiday season it's time to celebrate with comedy! We have shows, we have classes, and all the things nice to spice up your holiday season.  Give the gift of comedy!  We have Improv 101 starting Tuesday, January 4th with Jessica Hill, Sketch 101 with Daniel Kirby starting Saturday, January 8th, and Stand Up 101 starting Monday, January 10th with Rich Dary.  We also have physical gift cards available at the theater, and people can use them towards classes, shows, or drinks and snacks at a show.  This is the perfect way to brighten up your 2022 and make sure your new year is merry and bright.  Or if there is someone on your gift list who needs some chuckles in the new year.  

We have amazing shows this weekend, on Saturday night Set Unlisted is back at 7:30pm.  This is the Ultimate Stand Up, Improv Crossover show.  Local stand up comedians will perform a set of jokes, and then they will turn over their set list to the improvisers who will take that and turn them into a hilarious set of scenes.  Twice the funny out of every joke!  Then at 9pm we have the Ugly Sweater Show, an annual holiday tradition of short form fun.  Wear an ugly sweater to the show and get $1 off your first drink.  Come on out and watch our improvisers sleigh with chuckles abound.

Jessica Spenny from Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed will show you how to create your own scene partner - and then perform with them!

Our weekend of shows kicks off on Friday with a brand-new musical - made up by our singing, dancing, and talented From The Top team! The show starts at 7:30 pm, and it's silly fun that the whole family will enjoy.

Saturday night, we welcome a brand new face to Not Burnt Out Just Unscrewed. Come see Kataya Plett in her debut performance!

He's performed in hundreds of shows across the UK, Europe, and the USA, along with multiple performances with his improv duo Bendy House at the Edinburgh Fringe.

MAGICAL Comedy.

Come take a break from reality with Benny James as he entertains you with hilarious antics, mind-blowing mentalism, and amazing sleight of hand! Featuring a blending of comedy and magic, it's a crazy show that's fun for the whole family!

For over 25 years, Benny James has been entertaining audiences with his love of comedy and magic. Starting his career on stage at the age of 7, he has worked his comedic skills for years, performing sketches and routines from the likes of Abbott and Costello and Red Skelton.

It wasn't until working in a circus as a clown that he found his passion for magic. That passion would lead to more opportunities to work in film and TV as an actor, appearing in such films as "Cowboys and Aliens" and "True Grit," as well as the TV shows "Longmire" and "Gunslingers." He even played a starring role as the villainous Murakami in the Award Winning Short Film "Mr. Sushi."

When not performing, he works as a private ballroom dance teacher and a consultant for other magicians.

Tucson Regional Ballet presents A Southwest Nutcracker

 

A SOUTHWEST NUTCRACKER

Premiered in 1994, TRB’s flagship production A Southwest Nutcracker transports Tchiakovsky’s traditional Nutcracker in its entirety to 1880s Tucson, giving the characters and events a Sonoran Desert twist that has become a beloved Tucson holiday tradition.

Our party takes place in the hacienda of young Maria Martinez. Her favorite uncle, Tio Diego, brings his dancing dolls, a Gambler, Hurdy-Gurdy Gal, and Gunslinger, to entertain the guests. He presents Maria with a Nutcracker designed in the form of a U.S. Cavalry General. That evening, Maria is menaced by King Coyote and his pack of coyotes banditos. She is saved by her Nutcracker General, now life-sized and leading a troop of U.S. cavalry soldiers. After the battle, her Nutcracker General is transformed into a handsome soldier, and they escape over Mount Lemmon through swirling snowflakes. They arrive at a beautiful Desert Dream where they are welcomed by Native American Princesses, Prairie Children, and the lovely Prickly Pear Fairy and her Caballero. The Caballero and Prickly Pear Fairy order a fiesta in honor of Maria and her Nutcracker, and all of the citizens of the Desert Dream perform for the couple: Chili Peppers, the Copper Queen and her Copper Corps, Rattlesnakes, Tumbleweeds, Ocotillo, Mama Pinata and her Dulces, the Desert Flowers, and of course the Caballero and Prickly Pear Fairy themselves. As the festival ends, Tio Diego escorts the sleepy Maria home, where she awakens with the memories of her wonderful dream.

The costumes for A Southwest Nutcracker have been professionally designed to reflect both the Southwestern aesthetic and the spirit of the traditional Nutcracker, and the sets represent the beauty of Tucson, with traditional hacienda architecture, furniture, and props appropriate to the period, a magical growing Christmas tree, and backdrops displaying snow on Mount Lemmon and a Desert Dream with desert cliffs, cacti and flowers, bathed in the glorious skies of our Sonoran Desert.

Since 2003, Tucson Regional Ballet has enjoyed a collaboration with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra for live accompaniment, which completes the full artistry of the production and truly creates a professional experience for both the dancers and audience.
