Adele Furman touched many lives in Tucson, especially in our theatrical community. An accomplished performer for much of her life, through her work as founder and Director of Festival Repertory Theatre, Adele brought joy to audiences in Tucson for many years with an array of stagings that ran the gamut from the comedic works of Neil Simon to her most recent restaging of Ira Levin's thriller, Veronica's Room. She passed in January, and will be missed.

In commemoration of Adele and FRT, Speak the Speech Theatre will present two one act plays at the Cabaret Theater at the Temple of Music and Art on Thrursday, February 28, Friday March 1 and Saturday March 2 at 7:00 pm, and Sunday March 3 at 2:00 pm. The Thursday performance will be preceded by a reception at 6:30 pm.

The plays being presented are both critically acclaimed works: Robert Anderson's I'm Herbert and David Ives' Mere Mortals.

I'm Herbert is a sketch about two old people sitting on rocking chairs and talking and because they're a little old, they're a little hazy on the details of their marriages, affairs and sundry adventures. I'm Herbert stars Elin Brown and Ed Fuller, and is directed by Renata Rauschen.

Mere Mortals looks in on three constructions workers taking their lunch break on the 50th floor of a high rise project on Manhattan's lower West Side, and finds that as they munch on their pickle and pimento loaf sandwiches they are "visited" by some truly amazing figures from world history. Mere Mortals stars Rob Roberts, Stan Stein and Mark Klugheit, and is directed by Dan Reichel.

This is a guaranteed evening of hilarity, in a fitting remembrance of Adele from directors and performers who worked with her and loved her. Tickets are $15 at the door (cash or check only). You can reserve seats by emailing mklugheit@comcast.net.

In keeping with the things that mattered to Adele during her life, all of the net proceeds will be donated to the American Diabetes Foundation.

cool planet films is NOW CASTING for a micro budget feature film. The project is titled "Arizona Nevada." It was written and will be directed by Oscar Jimenez. The project is being produced by Jimenez and Tina Limon. The dramatic surreal narrative project follows three characters that have lost their way in life and embark on a series of activities and events that will help them reclaim their humanity. We are looking for camera, sound and lighting crew. We are casting multiple parts, including:

Laura:
Laura is a young woman in her 20's, who, having experienced no suffering in her life, aims to experience pain and turmoil in order to have the ability to be happy.

Jacob:
Jacob is a man in his 30's who has a troubled relationship. He is in a relationship with a man who gives him too much freedom.

"PAVILION" BELIEVES IN DO-OVERS

Playwright and TV writer Craig Wright (“Lost,” “Six Feet Under”) almost gets the magic going in his play “The Pavilion,” first produced in 2000 and still popular in America’s regional theaters.
Beowulf Alley Theatre gives its production a good tumble with its three-member cast of Lisa Mae Roether, Michael “Miko” Gifford and Martie van der Voort.
The set-up has Peter (Gifford) a financially successful psychologist meeting up again with less successful Kari (Roether) at their 20-year high school reunion. Once they were the cutest couple in their senior class.
Then Kari became pregnant. Peter dumped her and went off to college. Kari ended her pregnancy, married a local golf pro and has been living her own life of quiet desperation.
Meanwhile the torch for Kari has been smoldering in Peter’s heart, while guilt eats away at his moral fiber in defiance of his professional distance from real life.  Peter also writes folk songs, so…there you go.
Wright the playwright, and onetime Minneapolis ministerial student, is not concerned with whether or not Peter and Kari get back together. The dilemma of that mismatched couple is just the excuse for all of us to consider our place in the universe.
After all, whether you believe in parallel worlds or not, each of us already lives at the center our own personal universe.
Ever wonder what happened to the one who broke your heart and got away? Of course you have. Who hasn’t?
In your own personal universe, you get to decide what happened. Are these imagined events any less real than our memories? Are the kisses in your dreams any less substantial than the remembered kisses in your past?
In “Pavilion” the actor most responsible for stirring these philosophical thoughts is Martie van der Voort in the role of Narrator.  But she also plays about 30 other characters, many of them flashing faces in the crowd at this reunion.
Many familiar to all of us. There’s the quiet girl who always seemed to be watching you from the sidelines; the busybody continually groping for intimate details of other people’s lives. That sort of thing.
As director, Whitney Morton has chosen to deliberately treat all these characters van der Voort plays as a blur of passing ships. The way you’d remember them through a hangover the morning after your 20th anniversary reunion dinner and dance
Without using any props or costume changes, and minimal body language, van der Voort says the lines of each passing personality. Some are only a few words, such as a gasping acknowledgement of some other unseen class member’s story.
Others are a little more developed, but we in the audience are left to sort them out on our own – while also pondering the what-might-have-beens in the unsatisfied longing    of Peter and Kari.
Yes, there is life after high school. Quite a bit of it for most folks. But are there any second chances, as Peter asks Kari?
Of course there aren’t, really. We are all prisoners of our past. Even when we break free, it is the past that determines which direction we’ll run to reach freedom.
So we watch through the second act as Roether and Gifford warm to their task, creating a poignant chemistry between Kari and Peter.
Their acting is terrific, underlining the unkindest truth: if you don’t believe in the future, there’s no place to even have a second chance.
“The Pavilion” continues through March 3 with performances at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays, at Beowulf Alley Theatre, 11 S. Sixth Ave.

The Studio for Actors is now offering a "Taste of Improv Class." Here's how it works. Just come on one Wednesday night from 6:30pm-8:00pm for only $30. This class is normally $40, but for the evenings of March 6 or March 20, you can attend for $30 for one class only, and see how much you love studying improv at The Studio. So, if you've always wondered (or if you've never wondered) if you would enjoy comedy improv, this is your chance to check it out.

Comedy Improvisation

You don't have to be a funny person to love and get a lot out of a comedy improv class. I can make you funny. Because you have to focus in this class, you can end up both taking a vacation from the stuff that goes on in your life, and there's a lot of healing with laughter. Your coach is a former Saturday Night Live cast member, and will give you the accents and the formats you can use as a "safety net." Improv is a great stress reliever and really encourages the ability to verbally communicate. So, come, play, have a ball, and enjoy releasing your own special creativity.

Also, for students of acting, improv enhances your auditions, loosens up the body, helps you think fast on your feet, introduces dialects, and sharpens your timing.4 consecutive Wednesday nights

Stage and/or Screen Writing Partner Wanted

 

Do you like to work on some of your scripts in a writing team? Many of Hollywood's most successful films and many stage plays that make it to Broadway are written by writing partners who compliment each other's talents.  I work projects on my own and also with other writers.  I am seeking a writer at the moment who likes serious sci-fi, romantic comedy adventure, or sci-fi romantic adventure.  You need not have finished a script on your own but you would need to already have studied script writing somewhat and know the basics, such as:  there are always 3 acts and each act is broken down into scenes that bring the action forward, so that no scene is extraneous. Being comfortable with character development, character motivation, hidden agendas.  Also understanding plotting and how to move a script forward,  tone of script and how to keep the entire script in the same flavor while intensity levels change throughout during action or dialogue that reveals twists in plot.  Dialogue is important but I can usually keep someone on track if it's not their strong suite, as it's mine.   It's all harder than it may sound, which is why some scripts can take years to finish.  But often when two people work together the pieces fall into place faster, at least that's my experience.  It depends upon whether the two people have a similar sense of humor and find similar themes fascinating if working on sci fi.  Email or call. Perfectly fine to call just to inquire even if you've never worked on any scripts at all, but you are either a writer, actor or other artist in media. I have been marketing for about 10 years and I am very good at it and have all the tools and books with manager and agent contact numbers that are needed and I keep updating them.  So I can handle that entire side of the partnership.  For any project we began working on together it would be 50/50 when a sale is made minus a very small amount for time and materials in marketing on my side.  I am willing to draw up a contract between us if I can find someone for one of the scripts I am working on already or a new idea that we come up with together or something you have started that I think is a good project.

Two Actors ages 20-40

 

This is Community Theater so this not a paid gig, but we can offer compensation for gas/travel up to $200

 

We are trying to cast a show here at the Community Performing Arts Center in Green Valley (CPAC).  We desperately need two male actors’ ages: 20-40.  We have an actress in the show already coming from Tucson and she is willing to carpool.  It's really only 25min from downtown and we have a ton of fun.  The show is Agatha Christie's Mousetrap.

Multimedia Production Tax Incentives Bill - Next Steps

Friends of Film in Arizona,

Even though SB1242 was not heard in the Senate Finance Committee yesterday, we have a strategy in place to keep the bill alive. In approximately two weeks, the bill will move to the House where we will run a "striker" bill. Once the striker bill moves through the House, it will return to the Senate for a floor vote.

It’s relatively early in the legislative session -- which ran through the beginning of May last year – so don’t be discouraged. We believe we have the votes in both the House and the Senate to pass the bill.

Thanks to those of you who contacted Senator Yarbrough. We ask you to withhold your calls, e-mails and letters to legislators for now, but do keep talking about the Multimedia Production Tax Incentive Program which has the potential to bring hundreds of high paying jobs and millions of dollars in economic impact to Arizona.
