Roberto Bedoya, Direct of Civic Engagement, Leaves Tucson Pima Arts Council to Pursue New Opportunities Tucson, Arizona – December 14, 2014 - Roberto Bedoya has resigned his position as Director of Civic Engagement for the Tucson Pima Arts Council (TPAC) to pursue other opportunities.   Bedoya, the former Executive Director of TPAC, the designated arts agency for the City of Tucson and Pima County, shifted into his new role focusing on civic engagement at the national and local levels as part of an organizational restructuring in August of 2015.    President of the TPAC Board, James Glock, said, "In an ongoing commitment to be responsive to our community needs, mission and fiscal responsibilities, TPAC addressed its challenges with the August administrative restructuring. In light of these changes, Roberto decided to resign to pursue opportunities at the national level. The TPAC Board and Staff thank Roberto for his many years of service to the Council and the region's arts community and wish him great success in his future endeavors."   During his tenure at TPAC, Bedoya put policy into practice by achieving more than $600,000 in national foundation funding, creating and spearheading the innovative PLACE (People, Land, Arts, Culture and Engagement) initiative, which is nationally recognized and helping to foster a thriving inclusive arts community in Tucson. He helped redefine the parameters and expectations of creative placemaking, consistently advocating for an expanded definition of inclusion.   Additionally, Bedoya spearheaded the creation of the New Works grant program, which supports individual artists' projects within Tucson and Pima County that meet the highest standards of excellence across a diverse spectrum of artistic disciplines.   Roberto Bedoya adds, "It has been an honor and privilege to serve the region's outstanding arts community. I have made a decision to move forward in my career, have been blessed to work with a fine board and staff and am proud of the accomplishments we have achieved. It is time for me to more fully engage in my national work in the areas of creative placemaking, civic engagement and equity issues in the field." BAD SANTA LOVES THIS "CHRISTMAS MUSICAL"

Balancing out that sentimental spirit bubbling through the Baked Apple this red holly berry season comes the highly anticipated “Great American Trailer Park Christmas Musical,” a 14-song celebration of tacky lifestyles and unseemly language that Arizona Onstage Productions has unleashed in the Cabaret Space at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave.

Played at a flying reindeer pace under Debbie Runge's direction, you're never more than a moment away from the next ridiculous mash-up of traditional yuletide greetings and angry responses to America's most loved religious and secular holiday.

If you hate fighting those rabid shoppers, always hearing the same half-dozen songs and never finding a seat at Starbucks, this show is your antidote, your Christmas gift, your cork-popper for a shrinking heart.

The true spirit of mistletoe magic at the make-believe Armadillo Acres for hand-me-down mobile home living in north Florida's poverty-prone panhandle is convincingly expressed with blue collar gusto by the show's six-member cast, who close the first act singing “F—k It, It's Christmas!”

This is not a show for the sensitive soul. It is rated R and has more bad language than a South Park holiday special on TV.

Santa Claus is shown no respect, and at least one character insists Santa doesn't even exist. We are in the land of plastic baby Jesus and those equally iconic pink flamingos. Just like that country song says, if it wasn't for bad taste the folks in this trailer park wouldn't have any taste at all.

The venerable and much-loved Liz Cracchiolo has a white-knuckled grip on the central role of Darlene, the irascible resident who hates everything. But then she gets jolted by a surge of electricity while trying to unplug the extension cord a sneaky neighbor has stuck in her trailer's power outlet.

Darlene's long-standing and long-suffering buddies in tin-roof living are Lin (Maria Gallardo), Betty (Colleen Zandbergen) the park's manager, and new single-mom Pickles (Savannah Runge), whose logic is not exactly...logical.

Lin's name is actually her nickname – short for Lineoleum, a reminder of the kitchen floor on which she was born. There's lots of incidental info like that in the script, which often feels rushed because actors are so determined to keep this a high-speed production.

Representing the male side of our homey little circle are Rufus the handyman (Jeremy Vega) who also plays Santa Clause every year at the nearby 99 cent store and Jackie Boudreaux (Steve McKee) the oily entrepreneur who runs a pancake restaurant with Hooters-type waitresses.

The Hooters pancake house actually sounds like a pretty good idea for retirement communities, and calls to mind those topless donut shops that have been a Florida mainstay for many years.

But reality has very little to do with “The Great American Trailer Park Musical,” as you might well imagine. All the cast members stress the good-hearted nature of their individual characters, as well as that indomitable American spirit of being able to overcome any obstacle – whether it is rabid shoppers, a narrow play list of Christmas songs or never finding a seat at Starbucks.

Performances continue through Dec. 27, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, also 3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 19-20, and Sunday, Dec. 27, in the Cabaret Space at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave.

Our readers go into under-served classrooms on a weekly basis to read aloud to classes of children.  It takes just an hour a week to read to two classes and you will make a huge impact on these children who may have no one at home to read to them.

Breakfast is provided for over 200 underprivileged and deserving children from several Tucson elementary schools. The children are bussed to Little Anthony’s Diner where they walk through a hot and cold buffet line, then are treated to entertainment and a visit with Santa! Each child will get to sit on Santa’s lap, will receive a picture with Santa to take home, as well as a choice from a vast array of toys collected by the TPD and The Gaslight Theatre!  It’s been a TPD and Gaslight tradition for almost 25 years now.

 

  Police will arrive for set-up at 7:45. Children will start arriving at 8:30-9:00AM. We invite you to cover this story. It’s a very positive interaction between the TPD, The Pima County Sheriff's Department and the community.  It also gives underprivelaged children a chance to see Santa and get a toy!

THE DEATH MONOLOGUES has been performed in New York as part of the 2014 International Fringe Theater Festival and has  received international acclaim from its recent performances in the Netherlands. As well as in theaters, I have also performed in unique places such as the local funeral home and a living room with an audience of 30 people.
As well as being an exciting and entertaining piece of theater, THE DEATH MONOLOGUES has helped release the fear, guilt, and grief that many have about death and dying and has shed a very different light on this commonly dark subject. If it is desired, I also offer a workshop/ conversation after every performance that will give people the opportunity to have a meaningful exchange.

The Every Student Succeeds Act Becomes Law

 

Thursday, December 10, 2015   Statement from Robert L. Lynch, President & CEO of Americans for the Arts, on the Every Student Succeeds Act Today, at the White House, I had the privilege of attending the signing of the Every Student Succeeds Act by President Obama. I joined other education leaders in applauding the end of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) era and welcoming a new path for the American educational policy landscape. This new law holds great promise for restoring arts education as central to the school day and in the lives of students and our nation's future workforce.   President Obama before signing the Every Student Succeeds Act into law this morning For 14 years, from 2002 to 2016, NCLB policies resulted in many unintended consequences to schools, teachers, and students across the country. It demanded accountability steps that resulted in a hyper-focus on testing in a few subjects, leaving other core academic subjects—like the arts—to be reduced, or in some places, abandoned. The bill signed today removes this onerous element of NCLB and provides support for a well-rounded education, with all the arts disciplines represented, to be realized throughout the country.   Today is a result of countless advocacy efforts. Americans for the Arts and more than 100 arts and arts education organizations have spent a decade prioritizing arts education legislative objectives. Among these organizations weighing in are discipline-specific groups representing dance, media arts, music, theater, and visual arts, as well as groups representing community-based and out-of-school time programs. The work of this coalition has advanced our objectives as seen by the inclusion of some of our key arts education priorities, including: Dedicated funding for arts education through the "Assistance for Arts Education" grant program Inclusion of the arts in the "Well-Rounded Education" definition with over a dozen references in the bill ensuring, among other things, that the arts continue to be eligible for Title I funds—the largest federal funding source to local educational agencies and schools.  Integration of the arts in STEM programs – recognized in the field as "STEM to STEAM" Americans for the Arts' CEO Bob Lynch and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, the author of the arts integration into STEM amendment, at the White House education bill signing ceremony today. So what does this all mean for arts education moving forward? For a few years we have anticipated more local control and state level accountability in education. For the arts, this law means that states must invest in new arts education learning standards and resourcing of arts education to encourage creativity in our nation's classrooms. For education providers, we must seek to provide all students with an education that is shared and coordinated between classroom teachers, arts specialists, and community partners. Because of the national networks fostered at Americans for the Arts—including local arts agencies, arts service organizations, and more—communities are well positioned to take on this shared delivery approach.   In recognition of the leadership shift from the federal level to the states, Americans for the Arts launched in 2014 our State Policy Pilot Program to advance state level arts education policy and ensure equitable access to arts education for all students across a state. We're working nationally to increase the number of states that are using the arts as a tool to achieve various goals of education reform, such as increasing student performance, improving school climate. Additionally, we're supporting teams of education leaders from 10 states who are working in a collective impact model to address policy issues like high school graduation requirements and teacher evaluation.    While much work lies ahead in implementing the new federal education policy, today is a day to mark and to celebrate, as we begin the next chapter of education in America. I know that the arts can be a critical component in ensuring that every student will succeed in school, work, and life. Tucson, Arizona--Pima Community College Theatre Arts, in conjunction with Literacy Connects and Big Read Connects Tucson, presents a clever series of haunting dramatizations of Edgar Allen Poe's most popular works—The Tell Tale Heart, The Black Cat, The Raven, Annabel Lee, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Premature Burial and The Poetic Principle—artfully woven into one story by Richard McElvian. Poe's Midnight Dreary threads together the events of Poe's life and his work as he deliriously remembers each story on an anonymous deathbed in a Baltimore hospital.

Poe's Midnight Dreary is produced by PCC theatre arts under the coordination of Todd Poelstra, and performed by the following Tucson area high schools: Desert View (The Tell Tale Heart) directed by Ericka Quintero, Mountain View (The Black Cat) directed by Shannon Kerstetter, Sabino (The Raven) directed by Kris Kissel, Tanque Verde (Annabel Lee) directed by Debbie MacKinney, Canyon Del Oro (The Fall of the House of Usher) directed by Robert Cannon, Rincon/University (The Premature Burial) directed by  Maryann Green, and Salpointe (The Poetic Principle) directed by Dana Miline. PCC theatre students will act as ambassadors to the high schools and assist with backstage coordination and technical support. The event is free and open to the public. The run time is two hours.

SolAxé is excited and honored to be a new project under the 501 (c) 3 Many Mouths One Stomach (http://www.manymouths.org/) . MMOS, the producer of the All Souls Procession, is a Tucson based collective of artists, teachers, and community activists who come together with the intent to create, inspire, manifest, and perpetuate modern festal culture.

Under the co-direction of Nolan Kubota and Erika Colombi. The dynamic program features faculty and student choreographed pieces spotlighting jazz, modern and ballet styles. New choreography by Kubota features an excerpt from the classical ballet Swan Lake. Choreography by Colombi and new dance faculty Mirela Roza, along with guest dancers from Arts for All, are also woven into the concert. Dances are suitable for all ages.
