BITING COMEDY FILLS MAMET'S "BOSTON MARRIAGE"

Claire (Carley Preston) and Anna (T Loving) can't fill their empty mansion with love.

Think of Neil Simon's quippy dialogue with a razor’s edge and you’ve got David Mamet's lesser known but equally fierce “Boston Marriage,” given a deliciously crisp reading by Something Something Theatre, directed by Avis Judd.

T Loving and Carley Preston are the women with titanium jaws, biting down hard on each other – but with a proper decorum that is at times over-the-moon hilarious because both women are so angry yet so determined to prove their impeccable manners have mettle. A comedy of manners, Victorian style.

Also awesome is Jill Baker, no stranger to high-falutin' surroundings after appearing at the Rogue Theatre a few times. She plays the hapless Maid who works for Anna (Loving), a merciless matron who loves to flaunt her power over the hired help.

At the turn of the 20^th century, Anna and Claire (Preston) once were lovers in Boston, a time when the city valued its British heritage and devotion to the London way of doing things.

Anna is determined to convince everyone of her worthiness by never missing an opportunity to

demonstrate her knowledge of just about everything, even when she has no idea what she is talking about.

Claire is the cool one, always in control, always a step ahead of Anna, but still in love with her on some level. Claire would never embarrass Anna. She lets Anna do that to herself.

According to Wikipedia, Mamet wrote “Boston Marriage” in 1999 to answer the critics complaining he was a one-note playwright who could only write about men. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

The play never became a hit. It had a seven-week off-Broadway run, followed by several regional productions. Something Something Theatre selected “Boston Marriage” for its Women Who Dare season, setting it right up there with “The Taming of the Shrew.”

In the program notes, Judd refers to today's “coarsening of public discourse and the flippant dismissal of women's voices.”

SST's founding artistic director Joan O'Dwyer sees in the play a defining of helplessness and the fear that women of 100 years ago felt when all of society's customs gave men the advantage.

As the plot develops, both Anna and Claire feel hemmed in. They live in fear of being discovered as lesbians. Anna has no money. She must have a man who will provide for her. We see that no matter how proper these women appear in public, they are pretty helpless.

But “Boston Marriage” isn't necessarily about that. For those with no interest in feminist politics, “Boston Marriage” is still worth watching just to appreciate Mamet's ear for period conversation and his gift for writing dialogue equally rhythmic and mercurial.

Evan Grae Davis has traveled the world with camera in hand for nearly three decades, highlighting hundreds of human rights issues and social justice causes through short documentaries and feature film.

As an activist, Evan speaks at universities, symposiums and conferences around the world, including TEDxTalks in India and the US. As a consultant, Evan teaches and works with other filmmakers locally and internationally, and also works as a freelancer for non-profits and businesses who desire to tell the story of their product, service or cause.

He will share about his feature documentary, It's a Girl, and talk about how he keeps busy and pays the bills as a full time documentary filmmaker.

Anne Dalton came to Tucson in 2008 from North Carolina where she had worked in public health service design, delivery and communications. After retiring from this field in 2004, she travelled the West and chose to settle in Tucson.

She initially spent winters here studying journalism at Pima Community College and photography. Between 2010 and 2014, she was contracted to supervise the writing staff and provide photography with a local magazine, Community Connections. During that time, she became interested in learning documentary production and produced her first film for Soroptimists International of Desert Tucson in 2011. The film, "The Price of Silence," was about domestic minor sex trafficking in Southern Arizona. The film raised awareness of this national problem locally and was used to inform communities how to protect minors from this crime.

She went on to produce other short docs around community life with an emphasis on art, humor and health. She currently serves on the IFA Board and in 2015 established the first documentary group within IFA to provide training and on-hands experiences in production for those wanting to expand their documentary skills.

 

 

 

Genie Joseph, PhD

Genie was the CEO of Hawaii Movie Studios which produced several low-budget feature films.  She was co-producer of Nickelodeon's Beyond the Break for three seasons.  She is an award winning film and television director. 

Her feature films have been on Variety's Top 50 list and have won international awards.  As a staff producer/director at KITV-4, (The ABC Affiliate in Honolulu) she directed hundreds of TV commercials.  Genie is the author of twenty screenplays – ten of which have been sold and produced by independent companies.
 
As a film editor, beginning in the days of 35 mmm, she apprenticed to Woody Allen's editors and went on to edit several low-budget features, documentaries, and short films.  Her feature films have been distributed by SONY and played on USA Cable.

With an MFA, she teaches Television Production and Screenwriting at Chaminade University and also taught at Olelo, Hawaii's community Television station with five channels and 24/7 original programming.  She is Vice President of Independent Film Arizona.

FRESH OVERTONES IN ATC'S "FIDDLER ON THE ROOF"

Tevye (Eric Polani Jensen) has one of his many conversations with God in "Fiddler on the Roof."

Everything is big in Arizona Theatre Company's fresh production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” greeting you with open arms through Dec. 31 at the Temple of Music and Art. Not just big, but bigger. And even bigger.

The set design by William Forrester depicts the tattered Jewish shtetl of Anatevka. Its patched together wooden walls start at the stage floor and stretch up to God's Heaven, which we can't see but feel sure is floating just above the theater's overhead rigging.

Anatevka is a fictitious place though we know intimately the weariness of those tired walls, warped and much the worse for wear. What gives us the sense that this hapless little village is held together by an enduring belief in Jewish tradition is the wall's long, wide mural hung near the top, based on the fantastical figures of Marc Chagall.

Every cast member has a voice that soars, as well. The Poppa, the Momma. The five spirited girls of the Poppa and the Momma.

It is even better when the three oldest young ladies, now of marriageable age, begin to sing. You can feel their longing for true love.

The chemistry of togetherness onstage is palpable. David Ira Goldstein as director sets this tone in the first number, when Tevye (Eric Polani Jensen) begins to talk about the importance of tradition.

Unassuming in both stature and manner, this Tvye believes in doing the right thing and wants to do the right thing, even when most of the time he isn't exactly sure which side God thinks is right.

This Tevye is a Poppa of more human scale. He doesn't tower over the village like Moses with a strong singing voice. At times this gray hapless place seems to tower over Tevye.

Not true, the Momma. Anne Allgood plays Golde with a strong voice and enthusiasm for her strident personality.

Of course these two are a perfect match for each other as we ride along on the whole cast's journey through “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were A Rich Man,” “Sunrise, Sunset” and all the rest, ending in that showstopper for the older set, “Do You Love Me?” sung by Tevye and Golde.

“Fiddler on the Roof” opened on Broadway in 1964, just as the civil rights movement was about to boil over in several summers of urban destruction. A box office smash, the show was instantly loved for its music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph Stein.

For the next 57 years “Fiddler” was praised for its celebration of tradition, family and faith. Offering a beacon of civilized hope flashing through the daily tearing-down of culture pillars that had been revered in this country for centuries.

But seen in December of 2016, the show's prescient intent foreshadows negative change. Perchik (Patrick Shelton) the handsome communist revolutionary who wants to help overthrow the Tzar, says several times “It's a new world!” And every time he says it we are reminded of the recent Presidential election.

Back in the 1960s when “Fiddler” was new, “It's a new world” was a rallying cry of the boomer generation. The defiant Perchik and his ilk were going to free those village people from the chains of their own beloved tradition.

Now that we know the hope of those early years has brought us decades of turmoil and the election of Donald Trump, the shout of “It's a new world!” sounds like more of a threat. And the closing scenes of “Fiddler” -- as various villagers leave Anatvka to face an uncertain future in strange cities from Minsk to Chicago -- become filled with a certain poignancy that Bock, Harnick and Stein never intended.

 

"Fiddler on the Roof" continues through Dec. 31 with performances at various times at the Temple of Music and Art, 330 S. Scott Ave. Tickets are $25-$75, with discounts available. For details and reservations, 520-622-2823, or arizonatheatre.org
